Serbia: Readout of meeting of Prime Minister Kostunica and Secretary Rice

Question: Please provide a read-out of Secretary Rice's meeting with Prime Minister Kostunica

Answer: Secretary Rice met with Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica on July 11, 2006. They discussed our bilateral relationship and areas for future cooperation and partnership. The Secretary highlighted U.S. support for Serbia’s democratic development and path to membership in Euro-Atlantic institutions. The Secretary told the Prime Minister that in order for Serbia to succeed, they must seize available opportunities to progress toward a Euro-Atlantic future. This includes full cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). Regarding the future status of Kosovo, the Secretary informed the Prime Minister that the U.S. supports U.N. Special Envoy Ahtisaari and his efforts to reach a negotiated status settlement this year. She encouraged all sides to participate constructively and to show flexibility in the negotiating process.
