U.S. Support for Congolese Elections

The United States reiterates its support for the electoral process in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We call upon Congo’s leaders and people to move forward without delay with the presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for July 30.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has made great progress in implementing the transition to democracy set forth in the Global and Inclusive Agreement of 2002. The momentum created by the electoral process, which began with the approval of a new constitution in December 2005, must not be put at risk. Holding free and fair elections will complete the transition from war to peace. We urge Congolese authorities to ensure the conditions necessary for a free and fair election and ask all political leaders and parties to act in a responsible manner.
