Question Taken at the November 6, 2006 Daily Press Briefing

Eritrea: USAID Offices

Question:   There are reports that USAID has or is planning to leave Eritrea. Do you know anything about this?

Answer:   On December 31, 2005 USAID/Eritrea closed its offices and completed close-out of USAID programs in Eritrea with the exception of some humanitarian assistance activities that continue to be managed by a humanitarian assistance unit located in the embassy. The closeout is in response to the Government of the State of Eritrea's (GSE) request of July 26, 2005 for USAID to terminate development assistance programs in Eritrea.
