Through the Alliance, OSHA and IEC will provide members and others in the
electrical contracting industry with information and guidance that will help them protect employees'
health and safety, particularly in reducing and preventing exposure to falls, rear-end auto
collisions, and material-handling hazards. The Alliance's goals include:
- Work with OSHA to provide expertise in developing information on the recognition and prevention
of workplace hazards, and to provide expertise in developing ways of communicating such information
(e.g. print and electronic media, electronic assistance tools and OSHA's and IEC's Web sites) to
employers and employees in the industry.
- Speak, exhibit, or appear at OSHA or IEC conferences, local meetings and other events such as
IEC's National Convention and Electric Expo.
- Share information among OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals regarding
best practices or effective approaches and publicize results through outreach by IEC and through
OSHA- or IEC-developed materials, training programs, workshops, seminars, and lectures (or any
other applicable forum).

Activities and Events
- October 20-26, 2008:
2008 Drug-Free Work Week. Independent Electrical Contractors, Inc. and a
number of other Alliance Program participants are supporting the 2008 Drug-Free
Work Week. Sponsored annually by the U.S. Department of Labor’s
Working Partners for an Alcohol- and Drug-Free Workplace Program, the
Week’s focus is educating employers, employees and the public about the
importance of being drug-free as an essential component of a safe and healthful
workplace.
- May 4-10, 2008:
2008 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. The
Independent Electrical Contractors and a number of other Alliance Program participants supported
2008 NAOSH Week, "Safety is Good Business." Sponsored annually by American Society of Safety
Engineers and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of
preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace.
- April 21, 2008:
Teen Summer Job Safety Campaign Kick-off, Rockefeller Plaza, New York, New York. U.S.
Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao
kicked off
the OSHA national 2008 Teen Summer Job Safety Campaign during an appearance on NBC's TODAY show.
In addition, the event on Rockefeller Plaza featured a presentation by Assistant Secretary of
Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Edwin G. Foulke, Jr. Representatives from Alliance
Program participants, SkillsUSA, Independent Electrical Contractors and National Association of
Home Builders, also attended the event which included SkillsUSA students demonstrating safe work
practices for some of the most common tasks that teens may encounter in summer jobs. Sponsored by
OSHA, the Teen Summer Job Safety Campaign is a multi-year project to increase awareness about
workplace hazards and provide information about the hazards to young workers and their parents.
- April 7, 2008: IEC Safety Committee Meeting, Holiday Inn Capitol, Washington, DC.
- Rob Swick, Program Analyst, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of
Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA, gave a presentation "Alliance Program Update" to
electrical industry safety and health professionals.
- October 24-27, 2007: 50th Annual IEC National Convention and Electric Expo 2007, Hilton
Americas Houston & George R. Brown Convention Center, Houston, TX.
- October 25, 2007: James Shelton, Compliance Assistance Specialist, Region VI, Houston North,
Texas Area Office, USDOL-OSHA, staffed the IEC Safety Zone Exhibit.
- October 26, 2007: Danezza Quintero, Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, Office of
Construction Services, Directorate of Construction (DOC), USDOL-OSHA, gave a presentation "OSHA
for Construction" to 600 attendees. In addition, eight representatives from OSHA, Region VI,
North Houston, Texas Area Office participated in the IEC Basic Safety Training Class.
- May 6-12, 2007: 2007 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. The

supported 2007 NAOSH Week; "All Modes of Transportation." Sponsored annually by the American
Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), an Alliance Program participant, and the Canadian Society of
Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the
workplace.
- April 24-26, 2007: IEC National Legislative Conference, Washington, DC.
- April 24, 2007: Bob Isiminger, Office of Engineering Safety, Directorate of Standards and
Guidance, USDOL-OSHA, provided an OSHA Electrical Standards Update at the IEC Safety Committee
meeting.
- September 27-30, 2006: 49th Annual IEC National Convention and Electric Expo 2006, Colorado
Convention Center, Denver, Colorado.
- September 27-29, 2006: Erv Krueger, Labor Liaison, Region VIII, Regional Office, USDOL-OSHA,
staffed the IEC and OSHA Alliance Program exhibit booth.
- September 28, 2006: Four representatives from OSHA, Region VIII, Denver, Colorado Area Office
participated in the IEC Basic Safety Training Class.
- October 5-8, 2005: IEC 48th National Convention and Electric Expo, Hyatt Regency Inner Harbor,
Baltimore, Maryland.
- October 5, 2005: Danezza Quintero, Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, Office of
Construction Services, Directorate of Construction (DOC), USDOL-OSHA, gave a presentation
focusing on fall protection with an emphasis on scaffolding, ladders and trips to over 100
attendees.
- October 6, 2005: Danezza Quintero, Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, Office of
Construction Services, DOC, USDOL-OSHA, conducted an OSHA 10 Hour Course for Small Businesses.
- September 17-23, 2005: 2005 National Safety
Congress & Expo, Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, Florida.
- September 22, 2005: Lee Anne Jillings, Director, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances,
Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA, and John Masarick, IEC, spoke to 20
attendees about training products developed through the Alliance Program with other
Construction-related Alliances in a workshop entitled, "Construction Related Safety and Health
Training," during the National Safety Congress.
- September 29-October 2, 2004: IEC
47th Annual Convention and Electric Expo 2004, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
- OSHA had an exhibit booth next to the IEC exhibit booth in the
Minneapolis Convention Center.
- October 2, 2004: Danezza Quintero, Safety and Occupational Health Specialist,
USDOL-OSHA, gave a presentation focusing on fall protection with an emphasis on
scaffolding, ladders and trips to over 150 attendees.
- September 9-13, 2003: 46th Annual Convention and IEC Electric Expo 2003,

- September 11, 2003: Berrien Zettler, Deputy Director, Directorate of Construction, USDOL-OSHA, gave the keynote address to open the
Convention and Expo.
- October 14, 2002: Extending OSHA's Impact [PPT* - 416 KB],
Paula White, Director, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA. In addressing the Integrated Electrical Services a member
company of IEC, Ms. White described OSHA's cooperative programs, especially as they relate to the electrical sector of the construction industry.

Through the OSHA and Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) Alliance, IEC developed "29 CFR 1910 Electrical Standard Subpart S Fact Sheet." The Fact Sheet is designed to provide the electrical industry with information about the updates OSHA made to CFR 29 1910 Subpart S-Electrical Standard. (2007, September)
- Arc Flash Safety Presentation [PDF - 700 KB]. Through the OSHA and Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) Alliance, IEC developed "Arc Flash Safety Presentation." The Presentation is designed to provide the electrical industry with information about the updates OSHA made to CFR 29 1910 Subpart S-Electrical Standard. It focuses on topics such as hot work and arc flash. (2007, August)
- Fall Protection Safety Tips Sheets for Employers and Employees [PDF
- 25.6 KB]. Through the OSHA Alliance Program Construction Roundtable's Fall Protection Workgroup,
IEC worked with other construction-related Alliances to develop Tips Sheets for employers and
employees that describe general safety tips to help prevent fall-related injuries. IEC is a
participant in the Workgroup.

includes an article, "Alliance Program Develops Training Course," that describes the "Fall Hazard
Awareness for the Construction Industry" training program that was developed through the Alliance
Program Construction Roundtable's Fall Protection Workgroup. Through the Workgroup, IEC worked
with other construction-related Alliances to develop the program for construction industry
audiences including small business owners, trainers, foreman and workers.
