| Media Note Office of the Spokesman Washington, DC May 5, 2006 U.S. Contributes $40 Million to the United Nations High Commissioner for RefugeesThe United States is pleased to announce a forthcoming additional contribution of $40.7 million toward the 2006 operations of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Ellen Sauerbrey, Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration, informed High Commissioner Antonio Guterres of the contribution today in Washington. This will bring total U.S. contributions to UNHCR worldwide activities for calendar year 2006 to more than $274 million. The contribution will directly support UNHCR’s Annual Program activities as indicated below.
$ 20.0 million $ 5.7 million $ 2.7 million $ 2.3 million $ 1.6 million $ 3.7 million $ 3.7 million $ 1.0 million Specifically, the contribution will support UNHCR efforts worldwide including activities such as protection for Sudanese refugees in Chad and Colombians in Ecuador; refugee repatriation to Afghanistan, Liberia, and Burundi; local integration and resettlement; and assistance to refugees and displaced persons in places like Nepal and Tanzania. The protection and care of refugees and victims of conflict and the pursuit of durable solutions for them are shared international responsibilities. The United States is the single largest donor country to the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, doing our part to protect and assist refugees throughout the world. We urge other donors to strengthen their efforts in support of the programs of the UNHCR. 2006/462
