Press Statement Richard Boucher, Spokesman Washington, DC July 11, 2003
Performance Pay to Political AppointeesThe Washington Post reported today that the State Department paid cash bonuses to 23 political appointees. In fact, the 23 are all career members of the Foreign Service who are serving as Ambassadors and were recommended by promotion boards for performance pay in 2002.
As a policy, the Department of State does not award performance pay to non-career political appointees at the senior level—Senior Executive Service or Senior Foreign Service.
