| Press Statement Sean McCormack, Spokesman Washington, DC November 30, 2005 Death of Ambassador Ashraf GhorbalIt is with great sadness that Secretary Rice learned of the passing of a great friend to the United States, Ambassador Ashraf Abdel Latif Ghorbal. In a career that spanned five decades, Ambassador Ghorbal served the nation of Egypt with honor and distinction. As a Presidential Advisor to President Anwar Sadat and later as Ambassador to the U.S., Ambassador Ghorbal played a critical role in the developments that led to the historic signing of a peace treaty with Israel at Camp David. His efforts to promote lasting peace and understanding in the region will not soon be forgotten. In 1987, Ambassador Ghorbal returned to the United States as a visiting professor at Georgetown University. We offer our deepest condolences to the friends, family and colleagues of this extraordinary man. 2005/1118 |
