Fact Sheet Office of the Spokesman Washington, DC November 1, 2005
U.S. Government Action to Assist American Citizens in Mexico/Hurricane Wilma ResponseHurricane Wilma caused massive damage in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. The Department of State actively sought to ensure that U.S. citizens in the region were safe, had access to basic services, and were able to return to the United States as quickly as possible. There were no reported deaths among the estimated 15,000 to 20,000 Americans who were in the hurricane-affected area, and only minor injuries. We believe that all American citizens who desired to depart the Yucatan have now been able to do so.
Over 50 Consular officers in and around Cancun addressed nearly 100 reported medical cases of U.S. citizens and worked to assist them in obtaining medical care and in returning to the United States.
U.S. consular officials continue to assist American citizens in Cancun, Merida, and Cozumel.
AIRPORT CONDITIONS, AIRLINE FLIGHTS, FERRY AVAILABILITY: The airport in Cancun is open.
The airport in Merida is open, and both commercial and charter flights continue to depart.
Road conditions between Cancun and Merida remain poor, but passable.
Ferry service to Cozumel is now relatively normal. Limited commercial air service continues.
