U.S. Initials Expansion of Aviation Rights with the Russian Federation

On October 5, U.S. and Russian negotiators reached agreement on a major expansion of the rights available to our countries' airlines. For U.S. airlines, a large increase in rights to overfly Russian territory will make possible nonstop passenger service between the United States and India, will expand the use of cross polar routings to Asia, and will significantly enhance and make more economical overflights of Russia by U.S. cargo carriers operating between Europe and Asia.

The agreement will be applied immediately by the countries' aeronautical authorities pending formal entry into force.

The U.S. delegation was chaired by the State Department and included representatives from the Departments of Transportation and Commerce and from U.S. airlines and airports.
