The OSHA and SPI Alliance focuses on providing SPI’s members and others with
information, guidance, and access to training resources to promote machine safety particularly in
identifying machinery hazards and providing potential solutions to reduce injuries (e.g.,
lacerations, burns, and amputations). In addition, the organizations will work together to raise
awareness of hazard communication issues in the workplace. The goals of the Alliance include:
Training and education:
- Work with OSHA to provide expertise to develop training and education programs for plastic
industry employers and employees regarding machine guarding and lockout/tagout, and to provide
expertise in communicating such information to employers and employees in the industry.
Outreach and communication:
- Speak, exhibit, or appear at OSHA and SPI conferences, such as NPE 2006, local meetings, or
other industry events.
- Promote and encourage SPI members’ participation in OSHA’s cooperative programs such as
compliance assistance, the Voluntary Protection Programs, and Consultation and its Safety and Health
Achievement Recognition Program.
- Work with other Alliance participants on projects on hazard communication issues that are
addressed and developed through the Alliance Program.

Activities and Events
- June 19-23, 2006: NPE 2006: International Plastics Showcase. McCormick Place, Chicago,
Illinois. Bill Coullehan, Compliance Assistance Specialist, Calumet City, Illinois Area Office,
USDOL-OSHA, staffed an OSHA and SPI exhibit booth and distributed OSHA safety and health
information.
- June 22, 2006: Cathleen Cronin, Chief, Division of Training and Educational Development,
Office of Training and Education, USDOL-OSHA, made a presentation on the OSHA and SPI Alliance
and OSHA’s Susan Harwood Training Grant Program as part of a panel on workforce development
grants and training resources.
- June 21, 2006: Jim Washam, Region V, USDOL-OSHA and Wayne Wilson, United Southern Industries,
Inc. taught workshops on rollstock and sheet extrusion machinery safety and roll-fed and inline
thermoforming machinery safety.
- June 20, 2006: Jim Washam, Region V, USDOL-OSHA and Wayne Wilson, United Southern Industries,
Inc. taught workshops on injection molding machinery safety and blow molding machinery safety.
- September 28-30, 2004: Plastics USA 2004,
McCormick Place East, Chicago, Illinois. OSHA was a part of the SPI exhibit booth and members of the
OSHA and SPI Alliance implementation team distributed OSHA safety and health information, including
Plastics Industry CDs developed by the Alliance.
- July 16, 2004: Machine Safety for Plastic Roll-Fed and Inline Thermoforming, Placon Corporation,
Community Room, 6096 McKee Road, Madison, Wisconsin. SPI-OSHA Alliance Workshop.
- April 27 - 28, 2004: SPI Sheet Producers Division, Spring Technical Conference, Doubletree Hotel & Conference Center, Chesterfield, Missouri.
- April 27, 2004: OSHA/SPI Alliance Overview, Susan Howe, Senior Technical Director, Worker and Product Safety, SPI, shared details of the Alliance between SPI and OSHA with more than 60 representatives from the plastics industry who either produce plastic resins, manufacture sheet and/or roll stock, or manufacture machinery for use in the extrusion of plastic material.
- April 28, 2004: OSHA/SPI Machine Safety Extrusion Class: Presented by Jim Washam, Region V, OSHA-DOL and Wayne Wilson, United Southern Industries, Inc. During this train-the-trainer course, over 40 participants from the plastics industry and OSHA's Region VII St. Louis and Kansas City Areas Offices and Michigan OSHA learned about the types of injuries in the sheet and rollstock extrusion process, discussed the possible causes of the injuries and identified possible ways for employees to protect themselves by recognizing the hazards. In addition, the group discussed requirements for guarding machines and implementing solutions for identified problems.

Injection Molding Machine Safety Training Course.
Through the OSHA and Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (SPI) Alliance, SPI
developed “Injection and Molding Machine Safety Training Course.” The Course
contains machine-specific modules on machine guarding and lockout/tagout and
helps to identify the types of injuries that can occur while operating an
injection molding machine and ways to avoid those injuries. (2006, June)

Rollstock and Sheet Extrusion Machine Safety Training Course.
Through the OSHA and Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (SPI) Alliance,
SPI developed “Rollstock and Sheet Extrusion Machine Safety Training Course.”
The Course contains machine-specific modules on machine guarding and
lockout/tagout and helps to identify the types of injuries that can occur while
operating an extrusion molding machine and ways to avoid those injuries. (2006,
