OSHA Hazard Information Bulletins

June 16, 1989

MEMORANDUM FOR REGIONAL ADMINISTRATORS
THRU: LEO CAREY
Director
Office of Field Programs
FROM: EDWARD BAIER
Director
Directorate of Technical Support
SUBJECT: Safety Hazard Information Bulletin on Table Saws

The Dallas Regional Office has brought to our attention a potentially serious hazard existing with the use of certain Sears and Roebuck Craftsman brand table saws.

Sears states that the blade guards on Craftsman 8-inch table saw models 113.221610, 113.221611 and 113.221640 and 9-inch models 113.241730 and 113.241740 can drop unexpectedly on the spinning saw blades, causing the guard hinges to break. This can happen even though the blade guard assembly appears to be in compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.213(c)(1). The final result can be user injury if a user is struck by a thrown guard.

Sears advises owners to discontinue use of the affected replacement guard.

Please distribute this bulletin to all Area Offices, State Plan States and Consultation Projects.
