Southeast Alaska Spill Contingency Planning

Date Posted: August 14, 2003

The Southeast Alaska (GRS) document was finalized on June 26, 2003. GRSs (Geographic Response Strategies) are oil spill response plans tailored to protect a specific sensitive area from oil impacts following a spill. These response plans are map-based strategies that can save time during the critical first few hours of an oil spill response. They show responders where sensitive areas are located and where to place oil spill protection resources to minimize injury to the environment. These strategies are intended to be flexible to fit prevailing conditions at the time of the spill.

The Serviceメs Juneau, Alaska, Field Office provided a variety of data for inclusion in the Southeast Alaska GRS, including information on seabird colonies and spring, summer, and fall, waterfowl survey data and habitat importance and sensitivity. The Field Office also was of the cooperative work group that identified the sensitive areas and developed the strategies for each site. These are available on the web Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (see モLinksヤ below).
