Reducing Exposure of Lead to Waterfowl Date Posted: June 26, 2001 The Service's Upper Columbia River Basin Field Office in Spokane, Washington is working with the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Environmental Protection Agency, State of Idaho and others to conduct studies aimed at reducing waterfowl exposure to lead in the lower Coeur dοΎ’Alene River, Idaho. Studies will evaluate materials (amendments) that can be added to soil or sediment to decrease the amount of lead released into the environment and reduce the amount of lead that waterfowl are exposed to. These studies are expected to be completed in November 2001. The results could lead to further studies to assess full-scale application of amendments in areas where the treatment would likely reduce injuries to waterfowl caused by lead exposure.
