Distance Learning
e-Learning, Satellite and Correspondence Course Opportunities

• The National Advocacy Center is operated by the Department's Executive Office for United States Attorneys.  The Center trains Federal, state, and local prosecutors and litigators in advocacy skills and management of legal operations. View their list of upcoming courses.  Department of Justice employees can also access via DOJNET (DOJ Intranet) the Justice Television Network which provides information on Office of Legal Education programs that are distributed to a network of over 200 downlink sites at US Attorneys offices across the country.



• The Gov OnLine Learning Center is an e-Training site that provides web-based training to Federal employees. There are currently thirty free courses on the site ranging from courses on change management to courses on how to use desktop software. Justice employees can access the site by registering at www.golearn.gov. Note: You must enable Java and JavaScript. • The Self-Paced Training is operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Graduate School.  Learn at your own pace, on your own time, anywhere. Options for our self-paced learning include paper-based, CD-ROM, and Web-based courses. Each of these formats allows you to learn independently and on your own schedule.   Training is provided on a variety of topics including Federal personnel management, supervision, written communication, financial management, and the basic skills of reading, math, spelling, vocabulary, and grammar.

Department of Justice Training

• Information about the Drug Enforcement Administration's training program.

• The Bureau of Justice Assistance Training Database is a catalog of both federally funded and federally provided training available to state and local law enforcement officials. Each database listing includes the training provider, a course description, eligibility criteria, and contact information.



• The Office of Justice Programs provides links for training and technical assistance for law enforcement and community programs covering a wide range of issues.



• The Office for Domestic Preparedness provides training to enhance the capacity of state and local first responders to respond to incidents of terrorism involving weapons of mass destruction.
    

Other Federal Training

• The Access Board is an independent Federal agency devoted to accessibility for people with disabilities. In addition to providing training on the ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) the board provides training on design requirements for Federal facilities, telecommunications equipment, and electronic and information technology.



• The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) provides a variety of explosives and firearms training for examiners from Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

Administrative Training

• The National Independent Study Center is operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Graduate School.  Training is provided on a variety of topics including Federal personnel management, supervision, written communication, financial management, and the basic skills of reading, math, spelling, vocabulary, and grammar.




Assistive Technology

• The Computer/Electronic Accommodations Program (CAP) provides assistive technology accommodations and services to persons with disabilities to the Department of Justice at no cost. Training is also provided on how to use the technology.




Budget Issues

• A Citizen's Guide to the Federal Budget is an overview of the Federal budget process prepared by the Executive Office of the President.



• Instructions on Budget Execution (OMB Circular No. A-34) is the Office of Management and Budget's guide for Federal budget execution.

Career Management

• Career Manager is a U.S. Department of the Interior site that provides useful tools for managing your career and planning for retirement.

Computer Accessibility

• The General Services Administration's, Section 508 web site contains information on the Government's efforts to make the Internet more accessible to the disabled. This site includes Section 508 training resource information.

Computer Security

• The National Institute of Standards and Technology, an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce's Technology Administration, operates the Computer Security Resource Clearinghouse (CSRC). This site provides a link to training resources including the Computer Security Resource Center.



• Computer Security training videos and multimedia CD's are available from DOD INFOSEC training products using an on-line ordering form that lists the available computer security training products.

Congressional Processes

• The Government Affairs Institute at Washington, DC's Georgetown University provides education and training about Congressional process, organization, and practices, and about selected legislative policy issues. This site provides a course catalog and information about the Congressional Fellowship Program. It also contains registration information and forms.



• The Brookings Institution's Center for Public Policy Education in Washington, DC, offers executive programs to educate senior managers in business and government about global and domestic policy trends and issues, the U.S. policymaking process, and governmental operations. The site also provides information about the LEGIS Fellows Program.



• TheCapitol.Net, a private firm, is the exclusive provider of Congressional Quarterly Executive Conferences. It offers courses on the legislative process, federal budgeting, conducting legislative research, and working with congressional documents.  A catalog of other programs, including media relations training, is available.

CPR and First-Aid Training

• CPR and First Aid Training is available from the American Red Cross, local hospitals, and through private companies on-line and in the classroom.

Disability Awareness

• The Office of Personnel Management's Federal Employment of People with Disabilities web site provides a wealth of resources including training material for Federal supervisors and managers.

Drug Intelligence

• The National Drug Intelligence Center (NDIC) is providing a multiagency course, Introduction to Basic Drug Intelligence Analysis for Federal, state, and local law enforcement personnel.

Emergency Preparedness

• The United States Postal Service's handbook on Mail Room Security covers mail room security awareness, biological and chemical threats, and bomb screening and detection.



• The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released an Official Health Advisory, "How to Handle Anthrax and other Biological Agent Threats". The advisory provides background on Anthrax, and how to identify and properly handle a suspicious letter or package in the mail.

Equal Employment Opportunity Training

• Equal Employment Opportunity training is available from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). An index of available technical and assistance and training contains links to training programs provided by the EEOC for the private sector and Federal agencies.

Ethics

• The Office of Government Ethics (OGE) offers a variety of ethics training workshops and seminars to agency ethics officials that focus on applying the standards of ethical conduct, criminal conflict of interest statutes and the financial disclosure regulations in their day-to-day work.  Web-based training courses on position misuse and gifts along with a list of other agency web-based courses are also available.




Facilities

• The Federal Facilities Council (FFC) is a cooperative association of Federal agencies with interests and responsibilities related to all aspects of facility design, acquisition, management, maintenance, and evaluation.  The FFC conducts conferences on facility issues.

Financial Management in Government

• Treasury Agency Services offers financial management courses. The Professional Development Division provides information on current courses, events, and financial certification programs.



• The U.S. Chief Financial Officers Council (CFOC) is an organization of the CFOs and Deputy CFOs of the largest Federal agencies, senior officials of the Office of Management and Budget and the Department of the Treasury who work collaboratively to improve financial management in the U.S. Government. The CFOC web site contains information on developmental events and the Council's Fellows Program.

Foreign Language Training and Translator and Interpreter Services

• The Foreign Service Institute provides more than 500 courses, including some 60 foreign language courses, to more than 30,000 enrollees a year from the State Department and more than 40 other government agencies and the military service branches.



• The International Center for Language Studies (ICLS) in Washington, DC is private organization that provides foreign language and English as a Second Language courses.



• The Limited English Proficiency web site provides information and guidance to Federal agencies on implementing Executive Order 13166, "Improving Access to Services for Persons with Limited English Proficiency". The site also provides links to general translator and interpreter services and for legal , medical , state and regional services.




Health and Safety

• The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) provides training to Federal agencies on health and safety issues.

Human Resource Courses

• The USDA Graduate School has a six month Human Resource Professional Development Leadership Program to prepare mid-level HR professionals to be future HR leaders.

Information Technology

• The CIO University is a virtual consortium of universities which offers graduate level programs that directly address the executive core competencies adopted by the Federal Chief Information Officers (CIO) Council.  Courses on leading information technology programs are aimed at Senior Executive Service members, and GS-14s and 15s.



• National Defense University's, IRM College offers a variety of programs for Federal agency IT professionals.




Inspector General Investigator and Auditor Training

• The Inspectors General Auditors Institute provides training for Federal Offices of Inspector General auditors.

Labor Relations

• The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service provides mediation and arbitration services to government agencies and through the FMCS Institute offers courses on negotiation, labor arbitration and mediation, and on preventing or responding to workplace violence.



• The Federal Labor Relations Authority is an independent agency responsible for administering the Federal labor-management relations program. The FLRA offers training on rights and obligations under the Statute, relevant case law, regulatory filing requirements, arbitration and negotiability. The FLRA Office of the General Counsel provides training in labor-management partnerships, relationship building, interest-based negotiations and problem-solving, ADR design, labor relations strategic planning, and pre-decisional involvement.

Legal Education

• The Federal Library and Information Center Committee conducts training and events for Federal librarians.

Non-Federal Law Enforcement Training

• The Law Enforcement Television Network is a private company that offers education, training, and information for every discipline within law enforcement agencies. This site provides information about the company, program guides for satellite broadcast, and information for trainers on accreditation and course materials.

Office of Special Counsel

• The Office of Special Counsel provides information on obtaining course materials and the certification requirements for agency whistle blower protection.

Orientation for New Employees

• Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government Executive Education Programs offer programs in Public Management, Executive Skill Development, and Policy Development, as well as courses available through distance learning from the JFK School.



• The George Washington University School of Business and Public Management's Contemporary Executive Development Programs provide leadership training for managers and executives seeking to strengthen their ability to respond to the challenges of leading in the public sector. • The National Center for Education Statistics, part of the Department of Education operates College Opportunities On-Line, a search index for locating colleges by location and instructional programs offered.



• The Washington, DC Educational Coalition for Adults Returning to Education (WE CARE) is a non-profit coalition of educational, civic, and corporate organizations that seeks to provide adults returning to education with easier access to information about educational and financial aid opportunities in the District, Maryland, and Virginia.




Scholarships and Financial Assistance Specifically for Federal Employees or Their Dependents

• The Federal Employee Education and Assistance Fund is a private, not-for-profit tax-exempt corporation which provides educational benefits and emergency assistance exclusively to all civilian and postal Federal employees and their dependent family members.
