Special Briefing and Release of 2003 Trafficking in Persons Report

On Wednesday, June 11, at 3:00 p.m., Secretary of State Colin L. Powell will announce the release of the Department’s Trafficking in Persons Report to Congress. After the Secretary’s opening remarks John Miller, Senior Advisor to the Secretary, Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, will provide additional background on the report and be available to answer questions. For the first time this year, governments that are not making significant efforts to comply with the minimum standards as outlined in the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000, face potential loss of non-humanitarian, non-trade related aid. This event will be on camera and on the record, and will take place in the State Department’s press briefing room (MS 2209).

Advance Copies of the Embargoed Report

Embargoed copies of the report will be available on Wednesday, June 11 at 1:00 p.m. in the State Department’s Press Office (Room 2109). The entire report is EMBARGOED until the conclusion of the press briefing, approximately 4:00 p.m., June 11. The report is available on a first-come, first-served basis, one copy per media organization, and must be collected in person from Room 2109.

Copies will NOT be reserved, mailed, faxed, or delivered to a building entrance. Press wishing to attend this briefing should arrive at the 23rd Street entrance (between C and D Streets, NW) at 2:45pm.

Electronic Access to the Report via Internet

The full text of the report will be available for downloading from the State Department web site at: http://www.state.gov after the press briefing on June 11.

Media representatives may cover this event upon presentation of one of the following: (1) a U.S. government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense, or Foreign Press Center); (2) a photo ID issued by the employing media organization; or (3) a letter on official letterhead from employing organization verifying employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo ID (valid driver’s license or passport).
