Abbott

OSHA and Abbott are committed to providing the health care industry and others, including small businesses, with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety. The Alliance particularly addresses ergonomics, emergency preparedness and the business value of safety and health management system programs in the workplace.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On August 9, 2006, Mike Connors, Regional Administrator, Region V, USDOL-OSHA presented "The Business Case for Safety – A Joint Venture of OSHA, Abbott & Georgetown University" at the On-site Consultation Training Conference in Dallas, Texas.
  • Mike Connors, Regional Administrator, Region V, USDOL-OSHA presented "The Business Case for Safety: Adding Value and Competitive Advantage" at the following conferences and meetings on:

  • On March 7, 2005, the National Manufacturers' Week Conference was held in Chicago, Illinois. Lee Anne Jillings, Director, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA; Howie Eberts, Assistant Regional Administrator, Region V, USDOL-OSHA; and Jim Murphy, Director, Global Crisis Management and Business Continuity Planning, Abbott presented "OSHA: An Overview of What's New and Working for You," highlighting the OSHA and Abbott Alliance and the case studies developed by the Alliance for business school curricula. Lee Anne Jillings and Jim Murphy also presented "Cooperative Programs: The OSHA that Works for You" informing attendees about OSHA's cooperative programs and highlighting the OSHA and Abbott Alliance as a successful example.
  • On June 14-18, 2004, at the 2004 OSHA Compliance Assistance Training Sessions in Falls Church, Virginia, Jim Murphy, Director, Global Crisis Management and Business Continuity Planning, Abbott, and Mike Conners, Regional Administrator, Region V, USDOL-OSHA presented "The Business Case for Safety-Adding Value and Competitive Edge," describing case studies showing the effect of safety programs on the "bottom line" in the stadium construction, nursing home, and auto parts manufacturing industries.
  • Mike Connors, Regional Administrator, Region V, USDOL-OSHA; Dana Root, Ergonomist, Region V, USDOL-OSHA; and Bob Leonard, Industrial Hygienist, Region V, USDOL-OSHA spoke at the "Strategies for Safety and Success in Long Term Care" on:
    • November 3, 2004, in Wheaton, Illinois.
    • October 19, 2004, in Decatur, Illinois.
  • On September 16, 2003, the 54th Annual Illinois Health Care Association (IHCA) Convention and Trade Show was held in Springfield, Illinois. Mike Connors, Regional Administrator, Region V, USDOL-OSHA made a presentation on safety for healthcare workers; Bob Leonard, Industrial Hygienist, Region V, USDOL- OSHA updated the attendees on OSHA's inspection focus and latest OSHA standards for nursing homes; and Kim Kohls, Nursing Home Administrator, Countryside Care Center, provided examples of "Zero-Lift" programs that nursing homes have implemented quickly and at a relatively low cost.
  • Abbott representatives serve on the editorial board of the Motor Vehicle Safety Safety and Health Topics page on the OSHA Web site.
To meet the goals of promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:
  • In March 2005, OSHA and Abbott published case studies that can be incorporated into business school curricula to communicate the business value and competitive advantage of an effective safety and health program. Working with another Alliance participant, the Center for Business and Public Policy of the McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University, the case studies address ergonomics, auto parts manufacturing, offshore manufacturing plants, exposure limits, stadium construction, and fleet safety. These case studies are available on the OSHA Web site.

ADSC: International Association of Foundation Drilling

The OSHA and International Association of Foundation Drilling (ADSC) Alliance focuses on providing the Association's members and others in the foundation drilling industry, including small businesses and non-English or limited English speaking employees, with information, guidance and access to training resources to help them protect employees' health and safety. In particular, the Alliance addresses safety and health issues including, fall protection, silica, pinch-point and equipment operation hazards.

To meet the training and education goals of the Alliance:
  •  On April 29, 2006, Mike Talmont, Assistant Area Director, Region VI, Ft. Worth, Texas Area Office, USDOL-OSHA, and Rick Marshall, Chairman, ADSC Safety Committee, gave the OSHA 10-Hour Construction Outreach Training Program at the ADSC South Central Chapter Meeting in Irving, Texas.
  • On May 7, 2005, Danezza Quintero, Occupational Safety and Health Specialist, Office of Construction Services, Directorate of Construction, USDOL-OSHA and Rick Marshall, Chairman, ADSC Safety Committee gave the OSHA 10-Hour Construction Outreach Training Program at the ADSC Mid-Atlantic Chapter Meeting in McLean, Virginia.
To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On January 31-February 3, 2007, Jess McCluer, then Program Analyst, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA and Mylene Kellerman and Patrick Stark, Florida On-site Consultation Program staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth at the ADSC Equipment Expo '07 & Conference in Orlando, Florida.
  • On December 18, 2006, Rick Marshall, Chairman, ADSC Safety Committee, gave the Drilled Shaft Installation Safety Presentation, which was developed through the Alliance, to staff from OSHA Region V, Indiana OSHA and the Indiana On-site Consultation Program in Indianapolis, Indiana.
  • On December 6, 2006, Rick Marshall, Chairman, ADSC Safety Committee and T. Michael Toole, Construction Institute – American Society of Civil Engineers, an Alliance Program participant, gave the Design for Safety slide presentation at the ASCE and National Council for Geo-Engineering and Construction Workshop, "Trends Affecting the Geo-Community: What Does the Future Hold?" in Reston, Virginia. The slide presentation was developed through the Alliance Program Construction Roundtable Design for Safety Workgroup.
  • On November 16-17, 2006, through the Alliance, three representatives from California OSHA attended the ADSC Anchored Earth Retention Seminar in Oakland, California.
  • On November 6-9, 2005, Jess McCluer, then Program Analyst, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA and Stephen Boyd, Deborah Coler, Jorge Delucca, Nancy Thai, Jack Rector and Dutch Haverrman, OSHA Region VI, Dallas, Texas Area Office, USDOL-OSHA staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth at Geo³ Comprehensive Quality Assurance/Quality Control Technical Conference and Interactive Field Day and Exhibition in Dallas, Texas. On April 30, 2005, Jess McCluer, then Program Analyst, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA updated attendees on the activities of the ADSC Alliance at the ADSC Board of Directors Meeting in Dallas, Texas.

  • Through the Alliance, ADSC has published many articles about the Alliance Program in ADSC E-newsletter, its monthly electronic publication, and Foundation Drilling, its bi-monthly publication. In addition, National Driller, the publication of the foundation drilling industry, has published articles about the OSHA and ADSC Alliance.
  • Through the following three OSHA Regional and Area Office Alliances, the Agency works with ADSC to reduce fall, silica, pinch-point and equipment operation hazards:
    • Region X Regional Office and ADSC's West Coast Chapter, signed October 21, 2005;
    • Region VI Regional Office and ADSC's South Central Chapter, signed February 10, 2006;
    • Region VIII Denver and Englewood Area Offices and ADSC's Rocky Mountain Chapter, signed February 1, 2008.

  • On January 30, 2008, ADSC participated in the second Alliance Program Construction Roundtable in Washington, D.C. During the meeting, Alliance Program participants discussed products developed through the Roundtable and identified potential projects and compliance assistance resources to help address safety and health hazards in the construction industry.
  • On July 8, 2004, ADSC participated in the Alliance Program's Construction Roundtable, in Washington, D.C. During the meeting, construction-related Alliance Program participants discussed working together on Alliance-related projects for the construction industry. ADSC representatives are participating in the Roundtable's Fall Protection and Design for Safety Workgroups.

Altec Industries, Inc.

The OSHA and Altec Industries, Inc. Alliance focuses on providing information, guidance and access to training resources to help protect employees' health and safety, including non-English or limited-English speakers. In particular, the Alliance addresses the safe operation of cranes, digger derricks and insulated and non-insulated aerial devices including tree care devices as well as industry hazards such as falls and electrocutions.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • Through the Alliance, Altec conducted "Safe Operation of Insulated Aerial Devices Training" for OSHA Regional and Area Office staff and other safety and health professionals. Over 100 attendees have participated in the seminar, which was held on:
    • October 12, 2006 in Boise, Idaho.
    • October 18, 2006 in Portland, Oregon.
    • October 19, 2006 in Portland, Oregon.
    • November 14, 2006 in Atlanta, Georgia.
    • November 15, 2006 in Jacksonville, Florida.

American Association of Occupational Health Nurses, Inc.

OSHA and the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (AAOHN) are working together to provide AAOHN members and others, including large and small businesses, with information, guidance, and access to training resources particularly in addressing workplace hazard preparedness and security issues, such as workplace violence, musculoskeletal disorders, bloodborne pathogens and personal protective equipment.

To meet the training and education goals of the Alliance:
  • Through the Alliance, an Emergency Management/Hazard Communication slide presentation, "Planning for the Worst Case Scenario: What You Need to Know About All Hazard Preparedness," was developed by AAOHN and distributed by OSHA and AAOHN to the Association's Chapters and the Agency's Compliance Assistance Specialists for use in training.
  • Through the Alliance, a slide presentation, "Violence Prevention at Work: What Employers Need to Know," was developed by AAOHN and distributed by OSHA and AAOHN to the Association's Chapters and the Agency's Compliance Assistance Specialists for use in training.
To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On November 8, 2007, Sheila Arbury, Health Scientist, Office of Occupational Health Nursing, Directorate of Science, Technology and Medicine, USDOL-OSHA and Dionne Williams, Team Leader, Office of Health Enforcement, Directorate of Enforcement Programs, USDOL-OSHA presented information on OSHA's bloodborne pathogen standard during "Bloodborne Pathogens – What You Need to Know to Prevent Disease Transmission in the Workplace" Occupational Hazards Web cast.
  • On April 17-19, 2007, Sandra Khan, Occupational Safety and Health Specialist, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth during the AAOHN 2007 Symposium and Expo in Orlando, Florida.
  • AAOHN supported OSHA's 2007 Teen Worker Job Safety Campaign by posting information on its Web site and in its newsletter, ProHealth Alert.
  • On May 8-10, 2006, the AAOHN 2006 Symposium and Expo was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. On May 10, 2006, Elise Handelman, Director, Office of Occupational Nursing, Directorate of Science, Technology and Medicine, USDOL-OSHA presented "AED/CPR and OSHA Compliance: What the new guidelines mean to you." Edward Cosgrove, Industrial Hygienist, Region VI, Lubbock, Texas Area Office, USDOL-OSHA; Thomas C.   • On April 29-May 6, 2005, David Ferkul and Jolyn Crum, Industrial Hygienists, Workplace Safety Consultation, Minnesota Department of Labor and Sandra Khan, Occupational Safety and Health Specialist, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth during the AAOHN 2005 Symposium and Expo in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
  • On April 30 - May 7, 2004, Dan Corcoran, Compliance Assistant Specialist, Region VII, Wichita, Kansas Area Office, USDOL-OSHA staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth at the American Occupational Health Conference in Kansas City, Missouri.
  • On January 27, 2004, Nancy Menzel, M.D., representing the AAOHN, presented "Stress and Pain Management: Intervention for Back Pain" at the National Advisory Committee on Ergonomics (NACE) Research Symposium in Washington, D.C.
  • On May 7, 2003, John Henshaw, then Assistant Secretary, USDOL-OSHA made the keynote presentation at the American Occupational Health Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.
  • Through the Alliance, AAOHN provided OSHA with input during the development of the Agency's "First Receivers Guidance Document," "Fact Sheet on Workplace Emergencies" and "TB: A Guide for Prevention and Control Among Workers in Correctional Facilities" which are posted on the OSHA Web site.
  • AAOHN representatives serve on the editorial boards for the Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), Bloodborne Pathogens and Needlestick Prevention, Medical Screening and Surveillance, Occupational Health Professionals, Tuberculosis, and Workplace Violence Health and Safety Topics pages on the OSHA Web site.
To meet the goals of promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:
  • On May 7, 2007, Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA spoke to the OSHA and Alliance Program participants and other safety and health professionals during the 2007 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week kick-off event at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. Sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), an Alliance Program participant, and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace. AAOHN, along with a number of other Alliance Program participants, supported the Week.

American Biological Safety Association

Through the OSHA and American Biological Safety Association (ABSA) Alliance, the organizations are using their collective expertise both to enhance workplace health and safety and to assist employers, including small businesses, in developing a preventive focus for biological safety issues facing the American workplace.

To meet the training and education goals of the Alliance:
  • On October 7–10, 2007, the 50th Annual Biological Safety Conference was held in Nashville, Tennessee. On October 7, 2007, Melody Sands, Director, Office of Health Enforcement, Directorate of Enforcement Programs, USDOL-OSHA; Dionne Williams, then Team Leader, Office of Health Enforcement, Directorate of Enforcement Programs, USDOL-OSHA; and Karen Heckmann, Industrial Hygienist, Office of Training and Education, Directorate of Training and Education, USDOL-OSHA presented the professional development course, "Introduction to OSHA for Biosafety Professionals."
  • On October 15–18, 2006, the 49th Annual Biological Safety Conference was held in Boston, Massachusetts. On October 15, 2006, Melody Sands, Director, Office of Health Enforcement, Directorate of Enforcement Programs, USDOL-OSHA; Dionne Williams, then Team Leader, Office of Health Enforcement, Directorate of Enforcement Programs, USDOL-OSHA; and Karen Heckmann, Industrial Hygienist, Office of Training and Education, Directorate of Training and Education, USDOL-OSHA presented the professional development course, "Introduction to OSHA for Biosafety Professionals."
  • On October 2-6, 2006, Dionne Williams, then Team Leader, Office of Health Enforcement, Directorate of Enforcement Programs, USDOL-OSHA and John Keene, Diane Fleming and Barbara Johnson, ABSA presented the OSHA training course, "Essentials of Biosafety: Assessment and Strategies," to OSHA Compliance Safety and Health Officers in Bethesda, Maryland.
  • On October 23-26, 2005, the 48th Annual Biological Safety Conference was held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Dionne Williams, then Industrial Hygienist, Office of Health Enforcement, Directorate of Enforcement Programs, USDOL-OSHA and John Beck, OSHA Region VI, Austin, Texas, Area Office, USDOL-OSHA staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth.
  • On October 12-15, 2003, the 46th Annual Biological Safety Conference was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On October 13, 2003, Bob Curtis, then Division Director, Salt Lake Technical Center, USDOL-OSHA and David Ippolito, then Director, Office of Science and Technological Assessment, Directorate of Science, Technology and Medicine, USDOL-OSHA and representatives of the U.S. Postal Service presented "Improving Responses To Bioterrorism: Lessons Learned From The Anthrax Attacks."
  • On June 14-18, 2004, ABSA had an exhibit at the 2004 OSHA Compliance Assistance Training Sessions in Falls Church, Virginia.
  • On June 12, 2003, Debra Hunt, Assistant Professor/Chemistry, Director, Biological Safety Division, Office of Occupational and Environmental Safety, Department of Community and Family Medicine, Duke University, representing ABSA, presented "The Elements of a Biosafety Program" at the 2nd Annual OSHA Compliance Assistance Conference in Vienna, Virginia.
  • Through the Alliance, ABSA developed the fact sheets, "Principles of Biosafety" and "Biosafety Levels," which were posted on the ABSA Web site in March 2008 and linked to from the ABSA and OSHA Alliance Web page on the OSHA Web site.
  • Through the Alliance, ABSA developed a fact sheet, "Rescue and Recovery: Hygiene Practices for Workers," which was posted on the ABSA Web site in October 2005 and linked to from the OSHA and ABSA Alliance Web page on the OSHA Web site.
  • Through the Alliance, in 2003 ABSA published "OSHA Infectious Dose White Paper" in Applied Biosafety, the Journal of the American Biological Safety Association, Volume 8, Number 4.

Promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:
  • On May 5, 2008, Deputy Assistant Secretary Donald Shalhoub, USDOL-OSHA spoke to OSHA staff, Alliance Program participants and other safety and health professionals during the 2008 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week kick-off event at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. Sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), an Alliance Program participant, and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace. The theme for the 2008 NAOSH Week was "Safety is Good Business." The ABSA Alliance, along with a number of other Alliance Program participants, supported the Week.

The American Chemistry Council

The OSHA and American Chemistry Council (ACC) Alliance provides ACC members, ACC Responsible Care® Partners and others with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety, particularly through matters of mutual interest in promoting high levels of safety and health performance and improved dialogue through the OSHA Voluntary Protection Programs and ACC's Responsible Care Initiative.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • Through the Alliance, ACC developed a document, "ACC Responsible Care®/OSHA VPP Alliance Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)," and a one-page Alliance overview, "Overview of the ACC Responsible Care®/OSHA Voluntary Protection Programs Alliance," which were posted on ACC's Web site in June 2006 and linked to from the OSHA and ACC Alliance Web page.
  • Through the Alliance, ACC developed two tools, "Gap Analysis Worksheet for Facilities Currently Responsible Care® Management System Certified, but Seeking OSHA's Voluntary Protection Programs Certification" and "Gap Analysis Worksheet for Facilities Currently Participating in OSHA's Voluntary Protection Programs Certification, but Seeking Responsible Care Management System® Certification." The tools were posted on ACC's Web site in June 2006 and linked to from the OSHA and ACC Alliance Web page.
  • On June 8, 2006, Kevin Rockwell, VPP Coordinator, Region VI Houston South, Texas Area Office, USDOL-OSHA was a speaker for the session, "The Regulators' Views on Responsible Care Management System:® Will RCMS or RC14001 Get You Anything from OSHA and TCEQ," at the 2006 Texas Chemical Council/Association of Chemical Industries of Texas Environmental Health & Safety Seminar in Galveston, Texas.
  • On May 8, 2006, Ramona Morris, Assistant Area Director, Region IV Fort Lauderdale, Florida Area Office, USDOL-OSHA staffed the OSHA and ACC Alliance poster display at the 2006 Responsible Care® Conference in Miami, Florida.
  • On April 19, 2006, Amy L. DuVall, Director of Government and External Affairs, ACC, presented "Building an Alliance Between ACC's Responsible Care® Program and OSHA's Voluntary Protection Programs" at the OSHA Region IV Voluntary Protection Programs Participants' Association Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.

American Dental Association

Through the Alliance, OSHA and the American Dental Association (ADA) are using their collective expertise to help foster a culture of prevention while sharing technical knowledge in the area of ergonomics and promoting safe and healthful working conditions for dental employees.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On August 16, 2007, Dana L. Root, Ergonomist, Region V, Chicago, Illinois, USDOL-OSHA presented "Ergonomics for the Front Office Staff" at the American Dental Association Conference on Dentist Health and Wellness in Chicago, Illinois.
  • On May 4, 2006, Elizabeth Sherfy, then Program Analyst, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA gave an update on the OSHA Alliance Program and the OSHA and ADA Alliance to the American Dental Association Council on Dental Practice in Chicago, Illinois.
  • ADA added ergonomics information, including information on the OSHA and ADA Alliance and the Alliance Program, to the handouts and materials distributed to ADA members and others in the dental profession at ADA's Success Practice Management Seminars. To date, the seminar has been presented at 22 dental schools.
  • On October 6, 2005, Lee Anne Jillings, Director, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA participated during a workshop, "The Ergonomics of High Productivity" and presented "OSHA's Alliance Program: The Impact of Ergonomics in the Workplace" at the 146th ADA Annual Session in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • ADA created and posted a page on its Web site that provides information about the OSHA and ADA Alliance.
  • Through the Alliance, ADA developed "Ergo Tips--Hand Pain" which was posted in August 2006 on the ADA Web site and linked to from the OSHA and ADA Alliance Web page on the OSHA Web site
  • ADA representatives reviewed and provided OSHA with input during the Agency's development of its Compliance Assistance QuickStart Healthcare Industry Module that was posted on the OSHA Web site.
  • ADA representatives serve on the editorial boards for the Dentistry and Bloodborne Pathogens and Needlestick Prevention Safety and Health Topics pages on the OSHA Web site.

American Forest and Paper Association/Pulp and Paper Safety Association

The OSHA and American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA)/Pulp and Paper Safety Association (PPSA) Alliance works to provide the members of the organizations and others in the forest, pulp, paper, and paper-converting industries with information, guidance and access to training resources to help them protect employees' health and safety, particularly in addressing workplace ergonomics issues.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On November 2-3, 2006, Alan Angle, Compliance Safety and Health Officer, Region V, Madison, Wisconsin Area Office, USDOL-OSHA attended PPSA's ergonomics seminar, "Practical Ergonomics Training for Printing and Converting Operations in the Pulp and Paper Industry," in Indianapolis, Indiana.
  • On October 26, 2006, Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA gave a presentation about the OSHA and AF&PA/PPSA Alliance and related OSHA policies at the AF&PA's Safety and Health Group meeting in Washington, D.C.
  • Through the Alliance, OSHA and AF&PA/PPSA developed the following ergonomics success stories for the pulp and paper industries, which are posted on OSHA's Web site on the Ergonomics Safety and Health Topics page and linked to from the OSHA and AF&PA/PPSA Alliance Web page:

  • May 1-4, 2006, the OSHA 30-Hour Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry course was presented in St. Louis, Missouri. On May 1, 2006, Frank Cordier, Corporate Manager, Safety and Health Compliance, Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation gave a presentation on the OSHA and AF&PA/PPSA Alliance to the course's attendees.
  • AF&PA and PPSA representatives serve on the editorial boards for the Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout); Machine Guarding; Pulp, Paper, and Paperboard Mills; and Sawmills; Wood Products Industry; and Wood Dust Safety and Health Topics pages on the OSHA Web site.

American Foundry Society

Top Compliance Issues Found in Foundries," during the 19th AFS Environmental, Health and Safety Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.
  • On October 8, 2007, Scott Frosch, Senior Industrial Hygienist, Indiana Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration made a presentation about the safety and health issues that impact the foundry industry at the AFS Central Indiana Chapter Meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana.
  • On May 15-18, 2007, Jeffrey C. Rucker, Safety and Health Manager, Region VI, Dallas, Texas Regional Office, USDOL-OSHA and James J. Shelton, Compliance Assistance Specialist, Region VI, Houston North, Texas Area Office, USDOL-OSHA staffed the Alliance Program exhibit booth at the 111th Metalcasting Congress in Houston, Texas.
  • On February 1, 2007, AFS representatives participated in the Alliance Program's Small Business Roundtable in Washington, DC. During the meeting, Alliance Program participants reviewed promotional materials and tools that OSHA designed in response to the recommendations made during the Roundtable meeting on September 8, 2006.
  • On January 16, 2007, Nancy Newman, Assistant Area Director, Region V, Cleveland, Ohio Area Office, USDOL-OSHA and Fred Kohloff, Director, Environment, Safety and Health, AFS; Jack Schuldt, 10-Q Committee, AFS discussed OSHA's Local Emphasis Program on Primary Metals and other issues impacting the foundry industry in Ohio at the Ohio Cast Metal Association Meeting in Columbus, Ohio.
  • On September 17-20, 2006, representatives from the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development staffed the Alliance Program exhibit booth during the 18th AFS Environmental Health and Safety Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.
  • On April 28, 2006, Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA signed the OSHA and AFS Alliance renewal agreement and updated attendees on the Alliance Program and activities of the OSHA and AFS Alliance at the AFS' 2006 Government Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C.
  • On April 18-21, 2006, OSHA representatives staffed the Alliance Program exhibit booth during the 110th Metalcasting Congress in Columbus, Ohio.

  • On November 14-18, 2005 John Grzywacz and Terry Krug, Instructors, OSHA Training Institute (OTI), USDOL-OSHA presented the OSHA and AFS Compliance Training Course at the AFS Headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois.
  • On October 26, 2006, AFS representatives participated in the OSHA Alliance Program Hazard Communication Roundtable's Promoting the Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) Workgroup in Washington, D.C. Workgroup participants identified compliance assistance tools and products to educate the public, particularly small businesses, about the GHS. They also provided recommendations on the target audiences, subjects and formats of and methods for distributing the information.
  • On September 23, 2005, Kim Brightwell, Health Compliance Officer, Occupational Safety and Health Division, North Carolina Department of Labor presented "OSHA's Silica Standard and Reducing/Preventing Exposure to Silica" at the AFS Piedmont Chapter Meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina.
  • On August 22, 2005, Lee Anne Jillings, Director, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA gave a presentation on the Alliance Program and the activities of the OSHA and AFS Alliance during the 17th AFS Environmental Health and Safety Conference in Dearborn, Michigan.
  • On August 1, 2005, AFS representatives participated in the OSHA Alliance Program Hazard Communication Roundtable's Promoting the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for Classification and Labeling of Chemicals Workgroup meeting in Washington, D.C. The workgroup identified a number of compliance assistance tools that it could develop to support OSHA's plans to adopt the GHS as part of its Hazard Communication Standard.
  • On April 16-19, 2005, the Alliance Program exhibited during CastExpo '05 in St. Louis, Missouri.
  • On March 29-April 1, 2005, Frank Perrino and Anthony Towey, Instructors, OSHA Training Institute (OTI), USDOL-OSHA and Jack Schuldt, 10-Q Safety and Health Committee, AFS provided the OTI Foundry Training Course to OSHA staff members at the Ford Motor Company's Cleveland Casting Plant in Cleveland, Ohio.
  • On March 16, 2005, Jess McCluer, then Program Analyst, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA gave an update on the Alliance Program and the activities of the AFS and OSHA Alliance at Safety in the Foundry XVII in Providence, Rhode Island. In addition, John Grzywacz, Instructor, OSHA Training Institute (OTI), USDOL-OSHA presented "Fundamental Hazards of Electricity."
  • On March 11, 2005, then Acting Assistant Secretary Jonathan L. Snare, USDOL-OSHA gave an update on the Alliance Program and the activities of the AFS Alliance at the AFS' 2005 Government Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C.
  • On February 17, 2005, Ron Smay, Industrial Hygienist, Region III, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Area Office, USDOL-OSHA, presented "OSHA's Silica Standard and Reducing/Preventing Exposure to Silica" at the AFS Chesapeake, Keystone, and Metropolitan Chapters and the Conestoga Foundry Association and Pennsylvania Foundry Association meeting in York, Pennsylvania.
  • On August 16, 2004, Ken Gilbert, Area Director, Region V, Indianapolis, Indiana Area Office, USDOL-OSHA, gave a presentation on the Alliance Program and OSHA's enforcement activities at the 16th AFS Environmental Health and Safety Conference in Indianapolis. Representatives from the National Office staffed an Alliance Program exhibit.
  • Through the Alliance, AFS developed and published the "Guide for Selection and Use of Personal Protective Equipment and Special Clothing for Foundry Operations" module of its Safety and Health manual. The module was posted in November 2005 on the AFS Web site and linked to from the OSHA and AFS Alliance Web page on the OSHA Web site.
  • AFS members serve on the editorial board for Safety and Health Topics Pages for Powered Industrial Trucks, Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout), Heat Stress, Lead, Silica, Crystalline and Ventilation on the OSHA Web site.

American Heart Association

Through the Alliance, OSHA and the American Heart Association (AHA) work together to share best practices and technical knowledge for reducing death and disability from heart disease and stroke in the workplace.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On September 27, 2007, Alex Barbieri, Senior Case Manager, AHA gave a presentation on AHA's Start Program, a wellness program for the workplace, at the Association of Occupational Health Professionals, another Alliance Program participant, Congress of Presidents in Savannah, Georgia.
  • On June 6, 2007, AHA participated in the Department of Labor Safety Day in Washington D.C. AHA representatives staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth and provided safety and health information.
  • On May 7, 2007, Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA, spoke to the OSHA and Alliance Program participants and other safety and health professionals during the 2007 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week kick-off event at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C.   • On May 10, 2006, Elise Handelman, Director, Office of Occupational Health Nursing, Directorate of Science, Technology and Medicine, USDOL-OSHA and AHA representative, Diane Fendya, R.N. presented "CPR/AED and OSHA Compliance: What the New Guidelines Mean to You" at the AAOHN 2006 Symposium and Expo in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
  • On January 26, 2006, AHA representatives Michael R. Sayre, M.D. and Tom Zoch, M.D. presented "American Heart Association New CPR and ECC Updated Guidelines" at the OSHA Journal Club in Washington, D.C.
  • On August 8-9, 2005, AHA representatives provided the AHA CPR/AED Heart Saver Train-the-Trainer course for OSHA staff members at the Department of Labor, Washington, D.C.
  • On September 30-October 3, 2004, the Emergency Cardiovascular Care Update (ECCU) was held in New Orleans, Louisiana. On September 29, 2004, Paula O. White, Director, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA presented "Joining Forces to Expand our Reach: An OSHA Update" during the Emergency Cardiovascular Care Pre-Session of the ECCU. Dorinda Folse, Compliance Assistance Specialist, Region VI, Baton Rouge, Louisiana Area Office, USDOL-OSHA and Sandra Khan, Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth.
  • On July 13-15, 2004, AHA representatives provided the AHA CPR/AED Heartsaver Train-the-Trainer Course to OSHA staff members at the OSHA Training Institute in Arlington Heights, Illinois.
  • On June 14-18, 2004, the AHA had an exhibit at the 2004 OSHA Compliance Assistance Training Sessions in Falls Church, Virginia.
  • AHA shared two slide presentations, "Commit to Saving Lives, AED Programs--A Case for Support" and "Commit to Saving Lives, Implementing AED Programs" with OSHA.
  • AHA representatives serve on the editorial boards for the Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs); AEDs in the Workplace and Medical and First Aid Safety and Health Topics pages on the OSHA Web site.

American Industrial Hygiene Association

The OSHA and American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) Alliance focuses on reducing and preventing employee exposure to ergonomic hazards in the workplace by providing AIHA members and others with information and guidance for developing, implementing, and/or improving ergonomic programs.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On August 1, 2006, AIHA published a new safety alert: Deadly Hydrogen Sulfide and Shipyard Sewage that is posted on the AIHA Web site and linked to from the OSHA and AIHA Web page on the OSHA Web site. It was developed through the OSHA and AIHA Alliance and in conjunction with OSHA's maritime-industry related Alliances with the American Shipbuilding Association, the Shipbuilders Council of America, and the National Shipbuilding Research Program.
  • On May 13-18, 2006, AIHA's AIHce 2006 was held in Chicago, Illinois. On May 17, 2006, Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke Jr., USDOL-OSHA presented "Reaching New Heights: Where OSHA is Heading in 2006 and Beyond." In addition, 19 speeches and workshops were presented by OSHA speakers and Alliance Program participants. OSHA representatives also staffed an OSHA exhibit booth.
  • On May 21-26, 2005, AIHA's AIHce 2005 was held in Anaheim, California. OSHA representatives made over eight different presentations and staffed the Alliance Program exhibit booth.
  • On May 8-13, 2004 AIHA's AIHce 2004 was held in Atlanta, Georgia. On May 12, 2004 then-Assistant Secretary John Henshaw, USDOL-OSHA participated in "Question and Answer Session: Ask John Henshaw." In addition, OSHA representatives gave presentations and served on several panels that provided updates on OSHA. OSHA representatives staffed an OSHA exhibit booth.
  • On June 9-13, 2003, at the 2nd Annual OSHA Compliance Assistance Conference in Vienna, Virginia, AIHA representatives staffed an AIHA exhibit booth.
  • On May 12-14, 2003, AIHA's AIHce 2003 was held in Dallas, Texas. Then-Assistant Secretary John Henshaw, USDOL-OSHA presented "Navigating Unchartered Territory" outlining OSHA's 2003-2008 Strategic Management Plan goals. On May 14, 2003, five OSHA staff members and AIHA representatives participated in the Roundtable Discussion, "Expanding OSHA's Impact: Outreach and Assistance."
  • On February 1, 2003, Paula White, Director, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA presented "The OSHA-AIHA Alliance: Meeting the Goals Together" reviewing the Alliance's goals and early successes to AIHA's Technical Committee.
  • Through the Alliance, AIHA is sharing its Chapter Listings with OSHA.
  • Three OSHA staffers are participating as ad hoc members on AIHA's Ergonomics Committee to facilitate communication between the two organizations and to address and jointly resolve any issues that arise.
  • AIHA representatives helped develop and serve on the editorial board of the "Making the Business Case for Safety and Health" Safety and Health Topics page on the OSHA Web site.

  • On May 1, 2006, Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA spoke to OSHA and Alliance Program participants and other safety and health professionals during the 2006 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week Kick-Off event at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. Mary Ann Latko, Director, Science and Technical Initiatives, represented AIHA at the event. NAOSH Week, sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace. AIHA along with a number of other Alliance Program participants supported the Week.
  • On October 22-25, 2005, AIHA held its Professional Conference in Industrial Hygiene in Denver, Colorado. Several OSHA speakers participated.
  • On February 15, 2005, AIHA participated in the Alliance Program's Hazard Communication Roundtable in Washington, D.C. During the meeting, Alliance Program participants discussed hazard communication compliance assistance projects and activities they could work on together. AIHA representatives also participate in the Roundtable's Promoting the Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labeling of Chemicals Workgroup.

American Pipeline Contractors Association

Through the OSHA and American Pipeline Contractors Association (APCA) Alliance, the organizations work together to provide the association's members and others in the pipeline construction industry, including small businesses and non-English and limited English speaking employees, with information, guidance and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety. The Alliance particularly addresses reducing and preventing exposure to equipment operation (e.g., bulldozer, excavator and sideboom), trenching and excavation, and hydrostatic testing hazards.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On March 9, 2007, C. Bryan Little, then Deputy Assistant Secretary, USDOL-OSHA gave an update on the OSHA Alliance Program and the goals of the OSHA and APCA Alliance at the APCA Annual Convention in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

American Red Cross

The OSHA and American Red Cross Alliance helps to prepare employers and employees, including the American Red Cross employees, to respond to disasters, life-threatening injuries and emergencies. In addition, the organizations provide information, guidance, and access to training resources on safety and health topics, including emergency preparedness, disease prevention and first aid in the workplace. In particular, these efforts focus on individuals with limited-English proficiency and young employees.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • Through the Alliance, OSHA and the American Red Cross developed a presentation on OSHA regulations including, first aid, bloodborne pathogens and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which has been presented by OSHA State Plan State staff at number of events:

  • On May 23, 2007, Tina Jones, Industrial Hygienist, Office of Science & Technology Assessment, Directorate of Science, Technology and Medicine, USDOL-OSHA presented "OSHA Emergency Standards" during the "Is Your Worksite Prepared for Emergencies?" Occupational Hazards Web cast.
  • On May 7, 2007, Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA spoke to the OSHA and Alliance Program participants and other safety and health professionals during the 2007 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week kick-off event at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. Sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), an Alliance Program participant, and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace. The theme for the 2007 NAOSH Week was "All Modes of Transportation." The American Red Cross, along with a number of other Alliance Program participants, supported the Week.
  • On April 17, 2007, Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA and key construction industry stakeholders launched the national kick-off event for the OSHA 2007 Teen Summer Job Safety Campaign: Build a Safe Work Foundation at the Thomas Edison High School of Technology in Silver Spring, Maryland. The focus of the 2007 campaign was avoiding construction hazards. The American Red Cross, along with a number of other Alliance Program participants, supported the campaign.
  • On February 6, 2007, Amanda Edens, then Director, Office of Chemical Hazards, Directorate of Standards and Guidance, USDOL-OSHA and Jean Erdtmann, Director, Program Management and Field Support, Preparedness and Health and Safety Services, American Red Cross presented "OSHA Guidelines" during the "Are You Prepared for Pandemic Flu?" Occupational Hazards Web cast.
  • On October 19, 2006, the 2nd Annual Emergency Preparedness Conference: Disaster Readiness on the Home Front was held in Washington, D.C. Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA provided opening remarks and an OSHA update.   • On May 27, 2005, Alan Traenkner, Director of Voluntary Programs and Outreach, Region IX San Francisco, California Area Office, USDOL-OSHA presented "OSHA's Alliance Program and the OSHA and American Red Cross Alliance" at the American Red Cross 2005 National Convention in San Francisco, California.
  • Through the Alliance, the American Red Cross shared its Spanish language tip sheets, including tornado, flood and flash flood, wildfire preparedness, and power outages with OSHA. They were posted on the American Red Cross Web site and in August 2007 linked to from the OSHA Compliance Assistance: Hispanic Employers and Workers Web page on the OSHA Web site.
  • Through the Alliance with the National Office, local American Red Cross chapters have signed Alliances with OSHA Area Offices including Region V, Peoria, Illinois Area Office and Region III, Allentown and Philadelphia Area Offices.

American Shipbuilding Association

OSHA and the American Shipbuilding Association (ASA), along with the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) and the Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) work together to provide information and guidance to help protect shipyard employees' health and safety by minimizing or eliminating exposure to shipyard safety and health hazards.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • ASA, NSRP and SCA worked with OSHA and members of the Agency's Strategic Partnerships in Region III (South Tidewater Association of Ship Repairers), Region VI (SCA) and Region IX (Port of San Diego Ship Repair Association) to develop the storyboard and script for the second computer-animated hazard-awareness video based on actual shipyard fatalities. In April 2005, over 400 copies of the video were distributed to ASA, NSRP and SCA members and non-members and the members of the Strategic Partnerships. On September 23, 2005, Steve Butler, Director, Office of Maritime Enforcement, USDOL-OSHA promoted the video during the Film & Multimedia presentations at the XVIIth World Congress on Safety and Health at Work and 2005 National Safety Council Congress & Expo, which was held September 17-23, 2005 in Orlando, Florida.
  • On September 21, 2004, John Miles, then Region VI Administrator, Dallas, Texas, USDOL-OSHA discussed the application process, requirements and benefits of VPP from both the industry and government perspectives at a Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) Seminar sponsored by the OSHA and ASA, NSRP and SCA Alliances for members of the maritime industry at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems-Avondale Operations in Pascagoula, Louisiana.
  • On September 13, 2004, Tom Pope, then Area Director, Region III, Norfolk, Virginia Area Office, USDOL-OSHA; Jim Thornton, Director, Environment, Health & Safety, Northrop Grumman Newport News (ASA/NSRP); and Captain Teresa Preston, Director, Safety, Environment & Quality, Atlantic Marine, Inc. (SCA) presented a workshop, "Shipyard Alliances with OSHA," at the National Safety Council's Congress and Expo in New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • Through the Alliance, ASA, NSRP and SCA representatives worked with members of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), another Alliance Program participant, to develop "Safety Alert: Deadly Hydrogen Sulfide and Shipyard Sewage" which was posted in July 2006 on the AIHA Web site and linked to the OSHA and AIHA Alliance Web page on the OSHA Web site.
  • Through the Alliance, ASA, NSRP and SCA helped develop the Barge Cleaning, Fire Protection, Ship Building and Ship Breaking modules and serve on the editorial board for OSHA's Shipyard Employment eTool, which is posted on the OSHA Web site.
  • ASA, NSRP, and SCA members serve on the editorial boards for the Maritime Industry and Shipbuilding and Repair Safety and Health Topics pages on the OSHA Web site.

American Society of Safety Engineers

The OSHA and American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Alliance uses its collective expertise to help advance a culture of prevention while sharing best practices and technical knowledge, especially in the areas of ergonomics and reducing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and motor vehicle safety. In addition, the OSHA and ASSE Alliance addresses issues that impact non-English speakers and youth employees in the workplace and promotes the annual North American Occupational Safety and Health Week.

To meet the outreach and communications goals of the Alliance:
  • On June 24-27, 2007, ASSE's Professional Development Conference, Safety 2007, was held in Orlando, Florida. On June 25, 2007, Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA made a keynote presentation about OSHA's initiatives and its balanced approach to achieving the Agency's goals. Lee Anne Jillings, Director, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA addressed issues focusing on the Agency's Hispanic outreach initiatives at ASSE's Safety and Professionals and the Latino Workforce (SPALW) Workgroup meeting. In addition, OSHA speakers presented six workshops, and Mr. Foulke participated in a roundtable discussion focusing on how to reach out to small businesses and other hard-to-reach employers and identify potential outreach materials. OSHA representatives also staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth.
  • On June 11-14, 2006, ASSE's Professional Development Conference, Safety 2006, was held in Seattle, Washington. On June 12, 2006, Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA addressed the plenary session. OSHA staff attended a reception on achieving professional safety and health certification. In addition, OSHA speakers and Alliance Program participants presented eight workshops. OSHA representatives also staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth. OSHA staff attended a Reception on achieving professional safety and health certification.
  • On February 16, 2006, then-Acting Assistant Secretary Jonathan L. Snare, USDOL-OSHA updated ASSE's National Capital Chapter on the Agency's compliance assistance and cooperative programs and the activities of the OSHA and ASSE Alliance at the ASSE National Capital Chapter Meeting in Washington, D.C.
  • On June 12-15, 2005, ASSE's Professional Development Conference, Safety 2005, was held in New Orleans, Louisiana. On June 13, 2005, then-Acting Assistant Secretary Jonathan L. Snare, USDOL-OSHA addressed the plenary session. OSHA staff attended a workshop "Supporting SH&E Careers in Government" on achieving professional safety and health certification. In addition, OSHA speakers and Alliance Program participants presented seven workshops. OSHA representatives also staffed an OSHA exhibit booth. OSHA staff attended a workshop "Supporting SH&E Careers in Government" on achieving professional safety and health certification.
  • On June 7-10, 2004, ASSE's Professional Development Conference, Safety 2004, was held in Las Vegas, Nevada. On June 9, 2004, then-Assistant Secretary John Henshaw, USDOL-OSHA addressed the plenary session. OSHA staff spoke during seven workshops including Paula White, Director, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA, who presented "VPP: Leaders in Safety & Health Excellence" and Stewart Burkhammer, Director of the Office of Construction Services, Directorate of Construction, USDOL-OSHA, who presented; "OSHA Construction Update." In addition, OSHA staff attended a mentoring reception on achieving professional safety and health certification and staffed an OSHA exhibit booth. OSHA staff attended a Mentoring Reception on achieving professional safety and health certification.
  • On April 6, 2004, then-Assistant Secretary John Henshaw, USDOL-OSHA updated the ASSE National Capital Chapter on the DOL Employment Standards Administration's Safety, Health and Return-to-Employment (SHARE) initiative and the importance of safety and health professional certifications at the ASSE National Capital Chapter Meeting in Arlington, Virginia.
  • In 2004, a representative from ASSE's Houston, Texas Chapter updated OSHA's Federal Network for Young Worker Safety and Health (FedNet) about the chapter's young worker outreach efforts.
  • On June 22-26, 2003, ASSE's Professional Development Conference, Safety 2003, was held in Denver, Colorado. On June 23, 2003, then-Deputy Assistant Secretary Gary Visscher, USDOL-OSHA addressed the plenary session. In addition, OSHA staff attended a Mentoring Session on achieving professional safety and health certification. OSHA representatives also staffed an OSHA exhibit booth.
  • On June 9-13, 2003, ASSE was an exhibitor at the 2nd Annual OSHA Compliance Assistance Conference in Vienna, Virginia.
  • Through the Alliance, ASSE developed a brochure; "Workplace Safety Guide for New Workers."
  • ASSE members serve on the editorial boards for the Motor Vehicle Safety and Construction-Motor Vehicle Safety and helped develop and serve on the editorial board for the Making the Business Case for Safety and Health, Safety and Health Topics pages on the OSHA Web site.
To meet the goals of promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:

  • On October 26, 2006, ASSE representatives participated in the OSHA Alliance Program Hazard Communication Roundtable's Promoting the Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) Workgroup in Washington, D.C. Workgroup participants identified compliance assistance tools and products to educate the public, particularly small businesses, about the GHS. They also provided recommendations on the target audiences, subjects and formats of and methods for distributing the information.
  • On May 1, 2006, Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA and President Jack H. Dobson, Jr., ASSE made keynote addresses during the 2006 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week Kick-off event at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, DC. NAOSH Week, sponsored annually by the ASSE and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace. A number of Alliance participants also supported the Week.
  • On September 8, 2005, ASSE representatives participated in the Alliance Program's Small Business Roundtable, in Washington, D.C. During the meeting, Alliance Program participants provided a number of recommendations for OSHA on how to enhance its small business compliance assistance activities and resources.
  • On August 1, 2005, ASSE representatives participated in the OSHA Alliance Program Hazard Communication Roundtable's Promoting the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for Classification and Labeling of Chemicals Workgroup meeting in Washington, D.C. The Workgroup identified a number of compliance assistance tools that it could develop to support OSHA's plans to adopt the GHS as part of its Hazard Communication Standard.
  • On May 2, 2005, then-Acting Assistant Secretary Jonathan L. Snare, USDOL-OSHA made a keynote address during the 2005 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week Kick-Off event at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington D.C. Association for High Technology Distribution

The OSHA and Association for High Technology Distribution (AHTD) Alliance provides industrial employees, supervisors and machine designers with information and guidance to raise their awareness of the importance of proper selection, use, maintenance and installation of machine guarding equipment and the use of lockout/tagout procedures.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:

  • On April 8, 2005, John J. Deifer, Area Director, Region IV Savannah, Georgia Area Office, USDOL-OSHA gave a presentation on OSHA's Strategic Management Plan, cooperative programs and the OSHA and AHTD Alliance at the 2005 AHTD Spring Meeting in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

To meet the goals of promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:
  • On September 8, 2005, AHTD representatives participated in the Alliance Program's Small Business Roundtable, in Washington, DC. During the meeting, Alliance Program participants provided a number of recommendations for OSHA on how to enhance its small business compliance assistance activities and resources.
  • On February 15, 2005, AHTD participated in the Alliance Program's Hazard Communication Roundtable in Washington, DC. During the meeting, Alliance Program participants discussed hazard communication compliance assistance projects and activities they could work on together. AHTD representatives also participate in the Roundtable's Promoting the Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labeling of Chemicals Workgroup.

Association of Occupational Health Professionals in Healthcare

The OSHA and Association of Occupational Health Professionals in Healthcare (AOHP) Alliance focuses on protecting employees' health and safety, particularly in reducing and preventing exposure to patient-handling hazards and bloodborne diseases, and emergency preparedness in healthcare facilities.

Association of periOperative Registered Nurses

The OSHA and Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Alliance are providing AORN's members and others, including perioperative healthcare providers, with information, guidance and access to training resources to protect employees' health and safety. In particular, the Alliance addresses the areas of preventing percutaneous and ergonomic injuries and exposure to the smoke plume generated by the use of electrosurgery units (ESU) and lasers.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On September 16, 2007, Ron McGill, then Area Director, Region IV, Nashville, Tennessee, Area Office, USDOL-OSHA presented "OSHA—A Safety and Health Overview" at the 2007 AORN Clinical Specialty Conference in Louisville, Kentucky.
  • On September 8, 2007, Lyndol K. Miller, Industrial Hygienist, Region VI, Austin, Texas Area Office, USDOL–OSHA presented "Implementing OSHA Guidelines in the Workplace" at the 2007 Fall Conference in San Antonio, Texas.
  • On June 6, 2007, AORN participated in the Department of Labor Safety Day in Washington D.C. AORN representatives staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth and provided safety and health information.
  • On May 7, 2007, Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA spoke to the OSHA and Alliance Program participants and other safety and health professionals during the 2007 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week kick-off event at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. Brick Industry Association

Through the OSHA and Brick Industry Association (BIA) Alliance, the organizations are working together to provide information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help protect employees' health and safety, particularly in preventing exposure to hazardous levels of silica and in reducing ergonomics injuries.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On May 5, 2008, Deputy Assistant Secretary Donald Shalhoub, USDOL-OSHA spoke to OSHA staff, Alliance Program participants and other safety and health professionals during the 2008 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week kick-off event at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. Sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), an Alliance Program participant, and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace. The theme for the 2008 NAOSH Week was "Safety is Good Business." Michaela Ryastrom, Assistant Environment, Health and Safety, BIA attended the event and represented BIA, which, along with a number of other Alliance Program participants, supported the Week.
  • On February 5, 2008, Brian Robertson, Industrial Hygienist, Region IV, Clemson, South Carolina Area Office, USDOL-OSHA presented "Exposure Monitoring" and John Steelnack, Industrial Hygienist, Office of Biological Hazards, Directorate of Standards and Guidance, USDOL-OSHA presented "Control of Dust Exposures" and "OSHA Silica Resources" during the BIA Silicosis Prevention Seminar in Clemson, South Carolina.
  • On February 8, 2007, James Lane, South Carolina On-site Consultation Division attended the Silicosis Prevention for Brick Industry Workers Seminar in Clemson, South Carolina.
  • Through the OSHA and BIA Alliance, BIA developed the manual, Occupational Health Program for Exposure to Crystalline Silica in the Brick Industry, which was posted on the BIA Web site in May 2008 and linked to from the OSHA and BIA Web page on the OSHA Web site.
  • Through the OSHA and BIA Alliance, BIA has written and published articles about the OSHA and BIA Alliance and the Agency's compliance assistance products and activities in its electronic newsletter, Brick News Online. Specifically, the May 2008 edition of Brick News Online contained "Making the Business Case for safety and Health" by Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA.
  • BIA representatives serve on the editorial boards of the following Safety and Health Topics pages on the OSHA Web site: Confined Spaces, Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout), Heat Stress, Machine Guarding, and Silica, Crystalline.

Club Managers Association of America

Through the Alliance, OSHA and the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA) provide CMAA's members and others, including small businesses, with information, guidance, and access to training resources to help protect membership club employees' health and safety including non-English or limited English speaking and youth workers. In particular, the Alliance focuses on addressing hazard communication, recordkeeping and respiratory protection issues. In addition, the organizations address safety and health issues related to membership clubs' landscaping and horticultural activities.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:

  • On October 18, 2004, Paula White, then Director, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA updated the CMAA members on OSHA activities and issues at the CMAA Leadership/Legislative Conference in Arlington, Virginia.
  • On June 14-18, 2004, CMAA had an Alliance Program exhibit booth at the 2004 OSHA Compliance Assistance Training Sessions in Falls Church, Virginia.
  • On September 15, 2003, Gary Visscher, then Deputy Assistant Secretary, USDOL-OSHA updated CMAA members on OSHA activities and the signing of the OSHA and CMAA Alliance at the CMAA Leadership/Legislative Conference in Arlington, Virginia.
  •  In 2003, CMAA distributed to its members a packet of information on powered industrial truck safety prepared by OSHA, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division.

During the meeting, Alliance Program participants discussed hazard communication compliance assistance projects and activities they could work on together. CMAA representatives also participate in the Roundtable's Promoting the Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labeling of Chemicals Workgroup.

Concrete Sawing and Drilling Association

Through the OSHA and Concrete Sawing and Drilling Association (CSDA) Alliance, the organizations are working together to provide the association's members and other sawing and drilling operators with information, guidance and access to training resources to help them protect employees' health and safety. OSHA and CSDA focus on addressing highway work zone hazards, motor vehicle safety and respiratory protection for hazards associated with silica.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On January 22-26, 2007, the World of Concrete 2007 was held in Las Vegas, Nevada. On January 24, 2007, Stew Burkhammer, Director, Office of Construction Services, Directorate of Construction, USDOL-OSHA presented a seminar, "Outreach Programs for Construction." Representatives from OSHA Region IX, Nevada OSHA and Nevada On-site Consultation Program also staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth.
  • Through the Alliance, CSDA developed "CSDA Best Practices for Sawing and Drilling Operations: Highway Workzone Safety Best Practices Fact Sheet," which is posted on the CSDA Web site and linked to from the OSHA and CSDA Alliance Web page on the OSHA Web site.
  • Through the Alliance, CSDA members published articles about the OSHA and CSDA Alliance and the Agency's compliance assistance products and activities in its monthly publications, Concrete Openings and CSDA News, and bi-monthly magazine, PDi.

Construction Institute, American Society of Civil Engineers

The OSHA and Construction Institute (CI) Alliance promotes safe and healthful working conditions for construction employees. OSHA and CI use their collective expertise and technical knowledge to encourage employers to increase employee access to safety and health information and training resources, especially in the area of crane safety, and to incorporate safety and health issues into the construction process.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • The OSHA Alliance Program Construction Roundtable's Design for Safety Workgroup created a slide presentation, "Design for Construction Safety." It has been presented by CI representatives and other Alliance Program participants at a number of events:

Coordinating Committee for Automotive Repair

Through the Alliance, OSHA and the Coordinating Committee for Automotive Repair (CCAR) provide CCAR affiliates and others in the automotive industry, including but not limited to youth and Spanish-speaking workers, with information, guidance and access to training resources that help them protect employees' health and safety, particularly by focusing on workplace vehicle safety, abrasive wheel machinery (including associated silica hazards) and ergonomics.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On February 3-6, 2007, Robert G. Stewart, President, CCAR, staffed a CCAR exhibit booth and distributed Alliance Program information, including the OSHA and CCAR Alliance Activities Summary, at the 2007 National Automobile Dealers Association Convention and Exposition in Las Vegas, Nevada.
  • Through the Alliance, CCAR developed the "Operating Motor Vehicles: A Guide for Employees in the Motor Vehicle Industry." In December 2006, it was posted on the CCAR Web site and linked to from the OSHA Web site.
  • On June 19-23, 2006, CCAR representatives staffed a CCAR booth and distributed Alliance Program information at the 2006 SkillsUSA, an Alliance Program participant, national conference in Kansas City, Missouri.
  • On April 18-19, 2006, CCAR representatives staffed a CCAR booth and distributed Alliance Program information at the 2006 National Automobile Technology Competition (NATC) in New York City, New York.
  • On February 11-14, 2006, Robert Stewart, President, CCAR staffed a CCAR booth and distributed Alliance Program information at the 2006 National Automobile Dealers Association Convention and Exposition in Orlando, Florida.
  • On October 12, 2004, the 3rd Annual Collision Industry Trade Show was held in Northlake, Illinois. Jess McCluer, Program Analyst, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA and Seah Ochester, Safety & Pollution Prevention Officer, CCAR updated attendees on OSHA's Alliance Program, particularly the activities of the OSHA-CCAR Alliance. Representatives from both organizations staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth.
  • CCAR representatives serve on the editorial boards of Motor Vehicle Safety and Autobody Repair and Refinishing Safety and Health Topics pages on the OSHA Web site.

Crane, Hoist and Monorail Alliance

The OSHA and Crane, Hoist and Monorail Alliance, is comprised of the Crane Manufacturers Association of America (CMAA), the Hoist Manufacturers Institute (HMI) and the Monorail Manufacturers Association (MMA). Together, they work to provide crane, hoist and monorail systems owners and operators in general industry and construction with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety. These employees include Spanish-speaking and other high-risk or vulnerable "hard-to-reach" employees. Specifically, the Alliance works to reduce and prevent exposure to safety and health issues such as electrical hazards, falls from elevations or being struck by moving equipment.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:

The Dow Chemical Company

The OSHA and The Dow Chemical Company (Dow) Alliance focuses on using the organizations' collective expertise to further enhance a culture of prevention, while sharing proven practices and technical knowledge in the areas of process safety management (PSM) and ergonomics.

  • On October 18, 2006, Mark Spence, Manager, Health & Safety Regulatory Affairs, The Dow Chemical Company gave a presentation on the OSHA and The Dow Chemical Company Alliance to the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) in Southfield Michigan.
  • On August 10, 2006, Mark Spence, Manager, Health & Safety Regulatory Affairs, The Dow Chemical Company gave an update on the OSHA and Dow Alliance at the ORC Worldwide's Occupational Safety and Health Workgroup Meeting in Washington, D.C.
  • On January 13, 2006, the workshop "Managing Chemical Reactivity Hazards: A Workshop for Non-Chemists" was presented at Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) Technical Steering Committee Meeting in Houston, Texas. OSHA Alliances with The Dow Chemical Company, Chemical Reactivity Hazards Management and the National Federation of Independent Business worked together to organize and sponsor the workshop.
  • Through the Alliance, OSHA and The Dow Chemical Company developed a workshop, "OSHA's Process Safety Management (PSM) Standard: The Dow Approach," that discusses the various aspects of the PSM standard, including process safety information, process hazard analysis procedures, change management and Dow's implementation of PSM Standard in its workplaces. The workshop has been presented:
    • On May 3, 2007, at Region I's Compliance Assistance Specialist and On-site Consultation Project Managers Meeting in Mystic, Connecticut, to OSHA staff from Region I.
    • On November 16-17, 2005, at Dow's Operations Plant in South Charleston, West Virginia, to OSHA staff from the National Office and Region III and West Virginia's Consultation Project. This workshop included a tour of Dow's facility.
    • On October 13-14, 2004, at Dow's Louisiana Operations in Plaquemine, Louisiana, to representatives from OSHA staff from the National Office, Regions IV and VI, and North Carolina Department of Labor. This workshop included a tour of Dow's facility.
    • On September 16, 2003, at the OSHA Training Institute in Arlington Heights, Illinois, to OSHA staff from the National Office and Region V, Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Wisconsin's On-site Consultation Program.
  • On September 26, 2005, Cal Towns, Process Safety Advisor, Global Chlorinated Organics Business, The Dow Chemical Company helped present "Managing Chemical Reactivity Hazards: A Workshop for Non-Chemists," at the Chlorine Institute's 2005 Fall Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. The OSHA and Chemical Reactivity Hazards Management Alliance organized and sponsored the event with assistance from the National Federation of Independent Business, another Alliance Program participant.
  • On September 22, 2005, Paula White, Director, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA; Mark Spence, Manager, Health & Safety Regulatory Affairs, The Dow Chemical Company; and a representative from the OSHA and Graphic Arts Coalition Alliance participated on a panel, "Successes of OSHA's Ergonomic Alliances" at the National Safety Council's 2005 Congress and Expo in Orlando, Florida.
  • On June 17, 2004, Terry Hanning, Leader, Supply Chain, Environment, Health & Safety Regulatory Affairs, The Dow Chemical Company presented "Safety-Based Performance: A Global Initiative to Reduce Motor Carrier Incidents" at the 2004 OSHA Compliance Assistance Training Sessions in Falls Church, Virginia. Dow had an exhibit booth at the conference.
  • On May 14, 2004, Karen Kerns, Senior Industrial Hygienist, Global Industrial Hygiene Expertise Center, The Dow Chemical Company gave a presentation on a new workplace quantitative ergonomics risk assessment tool at an Ergonomics Roundtable in Washington D.C.
  • On June 12, 2003, Samuel L. Smolik, then Vice President, Environment, Health and Safety, The Dow Chemical Company presented "A Vision and Culture of Zero" at the 2nd Annual OSHA Compliance Assistance Conference in Vienna, Virginia. Dow had an exhibit booth at the conference.
  • Through the Alliance, The Dow Chemical Company and American Meat Institute, a former Alliance Program participant, helped develop and are on the editorial board for the Emergency Response and Receiving and Storage modules for OSHA's Ammonia Refrigeration eTool, which is posted on the OSHA Web site.
  • Dow representatives serve on the editorial boards for the Ammonia Refrigeration, Chemical Reactivity Hazards: Emergency Preparedness and Response, Health Care Facilities, Heat Stress, Isocyanates, Motor Vehicle Safety, and Process Safety Management Safety and Health Topics pages on the OSHA Web site.
To meet the goals of promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:
  • Through the Alliance, The Dow Chemical Company and OSHA developed the following case studies:
    • "Motor Carrier Safety: A Collaborative Approach to Reducing Motor Carrier Incidents" that describes how Dow worked with one of its contractors to enhance safety through the use of a behavior-based safety program. The study was posted on the OSHA Web site in February 2006.
    • "The Dow Chemical Company's Use of Six Sigma Methodology" a Motor Vehicle Accident Case Study, that describes the Six Sigma methodology and how Dow used it to successfully reduce motor vehicle accidents in the company's Hydrocarbons and Energy business unit. The study was posted on the OSHA Web site in December 2005.
    • "The Dow Chemical Company's Use of the 'Six Sigma' Methodology" that describes Dow's approach to identifying and implementing ergonomics solutions through the use of Six Sigma. The case study was posted on the OSHA Web site in May 2004.
  • On February 15, 2005, The Dow Chemical Company participated in the Alliance Program's Hazard Communication Roundtable in Washington, D.C. During the meeting, Alliance Program participants discussed hazard communication compliance assistance projects and activities they could work on together. Dow representatives also participate in the Roundtable's Promoting the Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labeling of Chemicals Workgroup Meetings.

Forging Industry Association

Through the Alliance, OSHA and the Forging Industry Association (FIA) provides FIA members and others in the forging industry, including small businesses, with information, guidance, and access to training resources to help them protect employees' health and safety. In particular, the Alliance addresses issues associated with ergonomics and machine guarding, including the prevention of amputations that may be experienced by employees in the forging industry.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On October 22-23, 2007, FIA members distributed information on OSHA compliance assistance resources and cooperative programs including the Alliance Program brochure, On-site Consultation Program Fact Sheet, OSHA and FIA Alliance Activities Summary and the FIA brochure, "OSHA Cooperative Programs," which was developed through the Alliance, at the FIA Fall Meeting of Members in Atlanta, Georgia.
  • On May 5-8, 2007, FIA members distributed information on OSHA cooperative programs including the OSHA and FIA Alliance Activities Summary and the FIA brochure, "OSHA Cooperative Programs," which was developed through the Alliance, to the attendees during the FIA Annual Meeting of Members in Huntington Beach, California.
  • Through the Alliance, FIA developed the "Reduce the Risk of Back Injuries" Tips Sheet which was posted in March 2008 on the FIA Web site and linked to from the OSHA and FIA Alliance Web page on the OSHA Web site.
  • Through the Alliance, FIA developed the "Help Prevent Eye Injuries" and "Help Prevent Hand Lacerations" Tips Sheets which were posted in January 2008 on the FIA Web site and linked to from the OSHA and FIA Alliance Web page on the OSHA Web site.

Independent Electrical Contractors, Inc.

The OSHA and Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) Alliance addresses reducing and preventing electrical contractors employees' exposure to falls, rear-end auto collisions and material-handling hazards by providing the IEC members and others with information and guidance and increasing their access to training resources.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On October 24-27, 2007, the 50th Annual IEC National Convention and Electric Expo was held in Houston, Texas. On October 25, 2007, James Shelton, Compliance Assistance Specialist, Region VI, Houston North Area Office, USDOL-OSHA staffed the IEC Safety Zone Exhibit. On October 26, 2007, Danezza Quintero, Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, Office of Construction Services, Directorate of Construction, USDOL-OSHA presented "OSHA for Construction." In addition, eight representatives from OSHA Region VI North Houston, Texas Area Office participated in the IEC Basic Safety Training Class.
  • On May 7, 2007, Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA spoke to the OSHA and Alliance Program participants and other safety and health professionals during the 2007 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week kick-off event at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. Sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), an Alliance Program participant, and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace. IEC along with a number of other Alliance Program participants supported the Week.
  • On April 24, 2007, Bob Isiminger, Office of Engineering Safety, Directorate of Standards and Guidance, USDOL-OSHA provided an OSHA Electrical Standards Update at the IEC Safety Committee meeting during the IEC National Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C.
  • On February 1, 2007, IEC representatives participated in the Alliance Program's Small Business Roundtable in Washington, D.C. During the meeting, Alliance Program participants reviewed promotional materials and tools that OSHA designed in response to the recommendations made during the Roundtable meeting on September 8, 2006.
  • On September 27-30, 2006, the 49th Annual IEC National Convention and Electric Expo was held in Denver, Colorado. On September 28, 2006, representatives from OSHA Region VIII Denver, Colorado Area Office participated in the IEC Basic Safety Training Class. Erv Krueger, OSHA, Labor Liaison, Regional Office, Region VIII, USDOL-OSHA staffed the IEC and OSHA Alliance Program exhibit booth.
  • On September 8, 2006, IEC representatives participated in the Alliance Program's Small Business Roundtable in Washington, D.C. During the meeting, Alliance Program participants provided a number of recommendations for OSHA on how to enhance its small business compliance assistance activities and resources.
  • On October 5-6, 2005, the 48thAnnual IEC National Convention and Electric Expo was held in Baltimore, Maryland. On October 5, 2006, Danezza Quintero, Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, Office of Construction Services, Directorate of Construction, USDOL-OSHA gave a presentation on fall protection with an emphasis on scaffolding, ladders and trips. On October 6, 2005, Ms. Quintero provided the OSHA 10-Hour Construction Outreach Training Program to small business employers.   • On October 2, 2004, the 47th Annual IEC National Convention and Electric Expo 2004 was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Danezza Quintero, Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, Office of Construction Services, Directorate of Construction, USDOL-OSHA gave a presentation on fall protection with an emphasis on scaffolding, ladders and trips. Jess McCluer, then Program Analyst, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA staffed the OSHA and IEC Alliance Program exhibit booth.
  • On July 8, 2004, IEC participated in the Alliance Program's Construction Roundtable, in Washington, D.C. During the meeting, construction-related Alliance Program participants discussed working together on Alliance-related projects for the construction industry. IEC representatives are participating in the Roundtable's Fall Protection and Design for Safety Workgroups.
  • On June 14-18, 2004, IEC exhibited at the 2004 OSHA Compliance Assistance Training Sessions in Falls Church, Virginia.
  • On September 11, 2003, the 46th Annual IEC National Convention and Electric Expo 2003 was held in Anaheim, California. Berrien Zettler, then Deputy Director, Directorate of Construction, USDOL-OSHA gave the keynote address. OSHA representatives staffed the OSHA and IEC Alliance Program exhibit booth.
  • On June 9-13, 2003, IEC exhibited during the 2nd Annual OSHA Compliance Assistance Conference in Vienna, Virginia.
  • On October 14, 2002, Paula White, Director, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA presented "Extending OSHA's Impact" to the Integrated Electrical Services, a member company of IEC.
  • Through the Alliance, IEC published articles on the OSHA and IEC Alliance in its publications--Codes & Safety, Connection and Insight.
  • Through the Alliance, OSHA and IEC developed the Subpart S-Electrical Standard Training Program, which was provided to more than 643 people throughout the country during several training sessions at IEC member and non-member companies.
  • Through the Alliance, IEC developed the fact sheet, "Electrical Standard Subpart S," which contains updates to 29 CFR 1910 Subpart S-Electrical Standard. It was posted on the IEC Web site and linked to from the IEC and OSHA Alliance Web page on the OSHA Web site.
  • Through the Alliance, IEC modified for the electrical contractor industry the Ladder Safety Toolbox Talks developed through the Alliance Program Construction Roundtable Fall Protection Workgroup. The Toolbox Talks were posted on the IEC Web site and linked to from the OSHA and IEC Alliance Web page on the OSHA Web site.
  • IEC representatives serve on the editorial boards of the Electrical Contractors Safety and Health Topics pages on the OSHA web site.

Independent Lubricant Manufacturers Association

The OSHA and Independent Lubricant Manufacturers Association (ILMA) Alliance focuses on providing the Association's members and others with information, guidance, and access to training resources to help them protect employees' health and safety.   • Through the Alliance, ILMA developed "Metalworking Fluids in Small Business: A Health and Safety "QUICKSTART" Guide" to help small businesses and their employees manage the health, safety and environmental impacts of metalworking fluids. It was posted in September 2005 on ILMA's Web site and linked to from the OSHA and ILMA Alliance Web page on the OSHA Web site.
  • Through the Alliance, ILMA published the article "Making the Business Case for Safety and Health" by Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA in its monthly publication, Compoundings, and weekly electronic newsletter, FLASHPoint.

  • On September 8, 2005, ILMA representatives participated in the Alliance Program's Small Business Roundtable, in Washington, D.C. During the meeting, Alliance Program participants provided a number of recommendations for OSHA on how to enhance its small business compliance assistance activities and resources.
  • On August 1, 2005, ILMA representatives participated in the OSHA Alliance Program Hazard Communication Roundtable's Promoting the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for Classification and Labeling of Chemicals Workgroup meeting in Washington, D.C. The workgroup identified a number of compliance assistance tools that it could develop to support OSHA's plans to adopt the GHS as part of its Hazard Communication Standard.
  • On May 2, 2005, then-Acting Assistant Secretary Jonathan L. Snare, USDOL-OSHA gave a keynote address to OSHA and Alliance Program participants and other safety and health representatives at the 2005 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week Kick-Off event at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington D.C. NAOSH Week, sponsored annually by the ASSE and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace. ILMA, along with a number of other Alliance Program participants, supported the Week.
  • On September 8, 2005, ILMA representatives participated in the Alliance Program's Small Business Roundtable, in Washington, D.C. Industrial Truck Association

Through the Alliance, OSHA and the Industrial Truck Association (ITA) encourage employers to increase employer and employee access to safety and health information and training resources on the operation and use of powered industrial trucks and to assist employers and employees in reducing and preventing exposure to potential hazards associated with the use of powered industrial trucks in general and in warehouses in particular.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • Through the Alliance, OSHA and ITA developed an "Industrial Truck Best Practices Seminar" that discusses applying industrial truck material handling techniques, recognizing safe load capacity and other workplace safety and health topics. Integrated Waste Services Association

The OSHA and Integrated Waste Services Association (IWSA) Alliance works to provide IWSA's members and others, including small businesses, with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety associated with the management of municipal solid waste, especially related to hauler safety. In particular, OSHA and IWSA promote the annual Hauler Safety Campaign: "Safety – Do It for Life." Further, OSHA and IWSA work together to reduce and prevent exposure to electrical hazards in waste to energy facilities.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
 
  • In June 2008, OSHA, state and IWSA representatives participated in "Hauler Safety Campaign: Safety – Do It for Life" events throughout the country.
  • On May 19-21, 2008, the North American Waste-to-Energy Conference was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On May 19, 2008, Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA gave the keynote presentation, "OSHA Adds Value to Business, Work and Life." On May 20, 2008, Lee Anne Jillings, then Director, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs (DCSP), USDOL-OSHA and IWSA representatives presented "OSHA Update: OSHA's Compliance Assistance and Industry Issues Update."
  • On May 5, 2008, Deputy Assistant Secretary Donald Shalhoub, USDOL-OSHA spoke to OSHA staff, Alliance Program participants and other safety and health professionals during the 2008 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week kick-off event at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C.   •  On August 29 2007, Lee Anne Jillings, then Director, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, DCSP, USDOL-OSHA and IWSA representatives Kent Baughn, Manager, Health & Safety, Wheelabrator Technologies Inc., Hampton, NH; Angus Miller, Director, Safety & Training, Veolia ES Waste to Energy, Inc., Ronkonkoma, NY; and Justin August, Manager, Health & Safety, Covanta Energy, Fairfield, NJ presented "Safety Campaign on a National Scale: Building a Successful Safety Campaign" at the 23rd Annual National Voluntary Protection Programs Participants' Association Conference in Washington, D.C.
  •  In June 2007, OSHA and IWSA participated in the "Hauler Safety Campaign: Safety – Do It for Life." On June 13, 2007, C. Bryan Little, then Deputy Assistant Secretary, USDOL-OSHA gave a presentation on the Alliance Program and the activities of the OSHA and IWSA Alliance at the Hauler Safety Campaign kick-off event in Lorton Virginia.
  • On August 30, 2006, Lee Anne Jillings, then Director, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, DCSP, USDOL-OSHA and IWSA representatives gave a presentation on the Alliance Program and the activities of the OSHA and IWSA Alliance, including the Hauler Safety Campaign, at the Voluntary Protection Programs Participants' Association, 22nd Annual National VPPPA Conference in Orlando, Florida.
  • In June 2006, through the OSHA and IWSA Alliance, IWSA developed the "Hauler Safety Campaign: Safety – Do It for Life." Region I Voluntary Protection Programs' representatives, state representatives and IWSA participated in campaign events throughout the country.
  • Through the OSHA and IWSA Alliance, IWSA published "Message to the Integrated Waste Services Association from Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA" in the July 25, 2008 edition of the IWSA weekly electronic newsletter, IWSA Weekly Update. ISSA

The OSHA and ISSA Alliance works to provide the association's members and others, including small businesses and general industry, with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety. The Alliance particularly focuses on hazards in the cleaning, maintenance and warehousing industries, such as slips, trips and falls and hazard communication (HAZCOM) (e.g., hazard classification, precautionary labeling, material safety data sheets and personal protective equipment).

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On May 5, 2008, Deputy Assistant Secretary Donald Shalhoub, USDOL-OSHA spoke to OSHA staff, Alliance Program participants and other safety and health professionals during the 2008 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week kick-off event at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. Sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), an Alliance Program participant, and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace. The theme for the 2008 NAOSH Week was "Safety is Good Business." The ISSA Alliance, along with a number of other Alliance Program participants, supported the Week.
  • On October 23-26, 2007, ISSA/INTERCLEAN® 2007 Educational Conference was held in Orlando, Florida.   • Through the Alliance, ISSA publishes articles about the OSHA and ISSA Alliance and the Agency's compliance assistance products and activities in its monthly e-newsletter, Legislative and Regulatory Update.
  • Through the Alliance, in July 2006 ISSA posted the ISSA Safety and Health Portal on its Web site, which includes Occupational Safety and Health Topics Pages on Bloodborne Pathogens, Cleaning Chemicals in the Workplace (Hazard Communication), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Injury & Illness Recordkeeping and Slips, Trips and Falls in the Workplace. A Small Business Resources page was added in April 2008. The portal is posted on the ISSA Web site and linked to from the OSHA and ISSA Alliance Web page on the OSHA Web site.
  • Through the Alliance, ISSA developed an article "Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls for Custodians" and a checklist "Minimizing Slips, Trips and Falls" which were posted in April 2007 on the ISSA Safety and Health Portal and linked to from the OSHA and ISSA Alliance Web page on the OSHA Web site.
  • ISSA representatives helped develop and serve on the editorial board of the OSHA Assistance for the Cleaning Industry Safety and Health Topics page on the OSHA Web site.
  • ISSA representatives serve on the editorial boards for the following Safety and Health Topics pages on the OSHA Web site: Powered Industrial Trucks and Walking/Working Surfaces.
To meet the goals of promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:
  • On October 26, 2006, ISSA representatives participated in the OSHA Alliance Program Hazard Communication Roundtable's Promoting the Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) Workgroup in Washington, D.C. Workgroup participants identified compliance assistance tools and products to educate the public, particularly small businesses, about the GHS. They also provided recommendations on the target audiences, subjects and formats of and methods for distributing the information.

The Joint Commission and Joint Commission Resources

OSHA's Alliance with The Joint Commission and Joint Commission Resources (The Joint Commission/JCR) provides health care workers and others in the health care industry with information, guidance and access to training resources to help them protect employees' health and safety. The organizations work together to specifically address reducing and preventing exposure to biological and airborne hazards in health care, and addressing emergency preparedness, ergonomics and workplace violence issues.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On October 11, 2007, the Annual Emergency Preparedness Conference: Preparing for the Unknown: "Are You Ready?" was held in Alexandria, Virginia. Edwin G. Foulke Jr., Assistant Secretary, USDOL-OSHA presented an update on the OSHA and Joint Commission/JCR Alliance and OSHA representatives staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth.
  • On September 6, 2007, Kay Dellinger, Medical Officer, Office of Occupational Health Medicine, Directorate of Science, Technology and Medicine, USDOL-OSHA presented "Increasing Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Rates in Healthcare Workers" and discussed the OSHA and The Joint Commission /JCR Alliance during the Health Care Worker Influenza Vaccination Protocols Audio Conference.
  • On August 20, 2007, Don Wright, M.D., then Director, Office of Occupational Medicine, Directorate of Science, Technology and Medicine, USDOL-OSHA gave a presentation on pandemic flu at the Annual Infection Prevention and Control Conference in Chicago, Illinois.

  • Through the Alliance, OSHA provided input to the "OSHA & Worker Safety" column that is published in the JCR monthly newsletter, Environment of Care® News for health care worker safety and health.
  • Through the Alliance, OSHA provided input during the development of the JCR and the American Hospital Association book, Total Health and Safety for Healthcare Facilities: Catalyzing Improvements in Employee Safety, Patient Care, and the Bottom Line, which was published August 2006.

Laser Institute of America

The OSHA and Laser Institute of America (LIA) Alliance provides the organization's members and others, including small businesses, with information, guidance and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety, particularly in reducing and preventing exposure to laser beam and non-beam hazards in industrial and medical workplaces.

To meet the training and education goals of the Alliance:

National Association of Home Builders

The OSHA and National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Alliance provides members and others in the residential construction industry, including non-English and limited- English-speaking employees and trade contractors, with information, guidance and access to training resources to help them protect employees' health and safety. In particular, the Alliance focuses on addressing fall, electrical, struck-by, and caught in/between safety hazards.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On April 10, 2008, Rob Matuga, NAHB, joined with other Alliance Program participants and attended the Office of Partnership and Recognition's OSHA Challenge Webinar.
  • On April 21, 2008, Secretary Elaine L. Chao, U.S. Department of Labor and Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA spoke at the kick-off event for the OSHA 2008 Teen Summer Job Safety Campaign, "Build a Safe Work Foundation," at Rockefeller Plaza, New York City, New York. In addition, Alliance Program participants Fred Humphries, President and Chief Executive Officer, Home Builders Institute, National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) and Tim Lawrence, Executive Director, SkillsUSA addressed the attendees. Secretary Chao launched the Campaign during an appearance on NBC's TODAY show. Teen workers from Alliance Program participant SkillsUSA demonstrated safe work practices for typical summer jobs for teens. NAHB and Independent Electrical Contractors, Inc., another Alliance Program participant, helped staff an OSHA exhibit booth. The Teen Summer Job Safety Campaign is a multi-year project dedicated to increasing awareness about workplace hazards and providing information about the hazards to young workers and their parents.

The focus of the 2007 campaign was avoiding construction hazards.   • On February 7-10, 2007, the International Builders' Show was held in Orlando, Florida. On February 8, 2007, Steven F. Witt, then Director, Directorate of Construction, USDOL-OSHA participated in the NAHB Safety and Health Committee meeting.   • On August 24, 2004, George Middleton, then-Program Manager, Labor, Safety & Health Regulatory Affairs, NAHB, gave a presentation on the association's Hispanic outreach programs at a meeting of OSHA's Hispanic Subgroup in Denver, Colorado.
  • Through the Alliance, NAHB provided OSHA National, Regional and Area offices, State Plan States and On-site Consultation Program staff with copies of its handbooks on scaffolding, safety tool kits and jobsite safety.
  • Through the Alliance, NAHB publishes articles about the OSHA and NAHB Alliance and the Agency's compliance assistance products and activities in its weekly e-Newsletter, Nations Building News.
  • NAHB representatives helped develop and serve on the editorial board of the OSHA Assistance for the Residential Construction Industry Safety and Health Topics page on the OSHA Web site.

National Maritime Safety Association

Through the OSHA and National Maritime Safety Association (NMSA) Alliance, the organizations work together to provide the association's members and others in the marine cargo handling industry with information, guidance and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety. The Alliance particularly focuses on intermodal container lashing issues and marine terminal traffic safety.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On March 28, 2008, Alan Traenkner, Director, Analysis and Evaluation, Region IX, San Francisco, California Area Office, USDOL-OSHA presented "OSHA Update and Alliances" during the NMSA Annual Meeting in San Diego, California.
  • On June 27-28, 2007, the NMSA Annual Meeting was held in Seattle, Washington. On June 28, 2007, Richard Terrill, Regional Administrator, Region X, Seattle, Washington Regional Office, USDOL-OSHA updated the meeting attendees on OSHA activities. Also on June 28, 2007, Amanda Edens, Deputy Director, Directorate of Standards and Guidance, USDOL-OSHA; Charles Lemon, Safety and Health Professional, Washington State Department of Labor and Industries; James Thornton, Chairperson, Maritime Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health (MACOSH); and John Cushing, Commander, United States Coast Guard participated in the "Safety Leadership from the Government Perspective" panel discussion.
  • On March 14, 2007, Roger Banaitis, Safety and Health Manager, Region VI, Dallas, Texas Regional Office, USDOL-OSHA updated attendees on the powered industrial truck standards (e.g. forklifts) along with the marine terminal/longshoring enforcement programs at the NMSA Technical Committee Meeting in Houston, Texas.
  • On September 13, 2006, Carl Halgren, then Area Director, Region X, Portland, Oregon Area Office, USDOL-OSHA updated attendees on the OSHA Alliance Program and activities of the OSHA and NMSA Alliance at the NMSA Technical Committee Meeting, Vancouver, Washington.
  • On June 21-23, 2006, the NMSA Annual Meeting was held in Charleston, South Carolina. On June 22, 2006, Jim Maddux, then Director, Office of Maritime Standards, Directorate of Standards and Guidance, USDOL-OSHA made a presentation and discussed OSHA's concerns regarding marine cargo handling facilities. On June 23, 2006, Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA gave a presentation on the OSHA Alliance Program. Following his speech, Mr. Foulke signed the OSHA and NMSA Alliance agreement.

National Safety Council

OSHA and the National Safety Council (NSC) work together to improve health and safety in the general and construction industries and to provide the nation's employers and employees, including small businesses and Hispanic and youth workers, with information, guidance and access to training resources. In particular, the Alliance focuses on helping to reduce traffic collisions and related worker deaths and injuries and provide first aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training in the workplace.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On June 6, 2007, NSC participated in Department of Labor's Safety Day in Washington, D.C. NSC had an exhibit booth during the event.
  • November 6-8, 2006, the 2006 National Safety Congress and Expo was held in San Diego, California. On November 6, 2006, Assistant Secretary Edwin G. National Shipbuilding Research Program

OSHA and the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP), along with the American Shipbuilding Association (ASA) and the Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) work together to provide information and guidance to help protect shipyard employees' health and safety by minimizing or eliminating exposure to shipyard safety and health hazards.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • NSRP, SCA and ASA worked with OSHA and members of the Agency's Strategic Partnerships in Region III (South Tidewater Association of Ship Repairers), Region VI (SCA) and Region IX (Port of San Diego Ship Repair Association) to develop the storyboard and script for the second computer-animated hazard-awareness video based on actual shipyard fatalities. In April 2005, over 400 copies of the video were distributed to NSRP, SCA and ASA members and non-members and the members of the Strategic Partnerships. On September 23, 2005, Steve Butler, Director, Office of Maritime Enforcement, USDOL-OSHA promoted the video during the Film & Multimedia presentations at the XVIIth World Congress on Safety and Health at Work and 2005 National Safety Council Congress & Expo, which was held September 17-23, 2005 in Orlando, Florida.
  • On September 21, 2004, John Miles, then Region VI Administrator, Dallas, Texas, USDOL-OSHA discussed the application process, requirements and benefits of VPP from both the industry and government perspectives at a Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) Seminar sponsored by the OSHA and NSRP, ASA, and SCA Alliances for members of the maritime industry at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems-Avondale Operations in Pascagoula, Louisiana.
  • On September 13, 2004, Tom Pope, then Area Director, Region III, Norfolk, Virginia Area Office, USDOL-OSHA; Jim Thornton, Director, Environment, Health & Safety, Northrop Grumman Newport News (NSRP/ASA); and Captain Teresa Preston, Director, Safety, Environment & Quality, Atlantic Marine, Inc. (SCA) presented a workshop, "Shipyard Alliances with OSHA," at the National Safety Council's Congress and Expo in New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • Through the Alliance, members of NSRP, ASA and SCA worked with members of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), another Alliance Program participant, to develop "Safety Alert: Deadly Hydrogen Sulfide and Shipyard Sewage" which was posted in July 2006 on the AIHA Web site and linked to the OSHA and AIHA Alliance Web page on the OSHA Web site.
  • Through the Alliance, NSRP, ASA and SCA representatives helped develop the Barge Cleaning, Fire Protection, Ship Building and Ship Breaking modules and serve on the editorial board for OSHA's Shipyard Employment eTool, which is posted on the OSHA Web site.
  • NSRP, ASA and SCA members serve on the editorial boards for the Maritime Industry and Shipbuilding and Repair Safety and Health Topics pages on the OSHA Web site.

National Shooting Sports Foundation and the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute, Inc.

Through the OSHA and National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute, Inc., (SAAMI) Alliance, the organizations work to develop information and guidance for member and non-member shooting ranges to help enhance employee safety programs, including methods and procedures to minimize airborne pollutants in the work environment and control and prevent exposure to other hazards in their facilities.

To meet the training and education goals of the Alliance:
  • Through the Alliance, NASR developed and published a manual, Lead Management and OSHA Compliance for Indoor Shooting Ranges for range owners and operators.
  • Through the Alliance, NASR developed and published a brochure Hearing Protection & the Shooting Sports.
To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • In its summer 2006 edition, The Range Report, a publication of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, contained an article, "Alliance Promotes Safe Working Conditions at Shooting Ranges."
  • On February 9-12, 2006, the 2006 SHOT Show: The Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show and Conference was held in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ronald Parker, Supervisor, Industrial Hygiene, and Michael Behling, Industrial Hygienist, Nevada – Occupational Safety and Health Administration; and Tania Charette, Trainer, Art Sipple, Industrial Hygienist, and Todd Schultz, Safety Consultant, Nevada - Safety Consultation and Training Section staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth. On February 10, 2006, SHOT Daily published "NASR/SAAMI and OSHA Alliance."
  • On January 28-31, 2005, the 2005 SHOT Show: The Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show and Conference was held in Las Vegas, Nevada. On January 29, 2005, Ira Wainless, Industrial Hygienist, Office of Science and Technology Assessment, Directorate of Science, Technology and Medicine, USDOL-OSHA; Ronald Parker, Industrial Hygiene Supervisor, Nevada-OSHA; Todd Shultz, Safety Specialist, Nevada-OSHA Safety Consultation and Training Section and Bradley King, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health participated in a panel discussion, "Airborne Lead Management". National Telecommunications Safety Panel

The OSHA and National Telecommunications Safety Panel (NTSP) Alliance focuses on providing telecommunications employees with information, guidance and access to training resources and sharing best practices and technical knowledge to address ergonomic issues in the telecommunications industry.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On September 18, 2007, David Goldsheyder, Ergonomist, Region II, New York City, New York, USDOL-OSHA gave a presentation on OSHA's ergonomic-related compliance assistance products and resources and technical information at the 2007 International Telecommunications Safety Conference in Niagara Falls, New York.
  • On September 19, 2006, the 2006 International Telecommunications Safety Conference was held in Little Rock, Arkansas. Brett Besser, Ergonomist, Salt Lake Technical Center, Directorate of Science, Technology and Medicine, USDOL-OSHA gave a presentation on OSHA's cooperative programs that included information on the Agency's ergonomic-related Alliances and Strategic Partnerships with the United States Postal Service and the National Parks Service. Representatives from the OSHA Region VI, Little Rock, Arkansas, Area Office attended the conference.
  • On June 29, 2006, Eric Allgaier, Group Manager, Environmental Health and Safety, Sprint Nextel gave a presentation about the OSHA and NTSP Alliance at the Sprint Safety and Security Day in Reston, Virginia.
  • On March 6, 2006, Marie Robinson, Ergonomist, AT&T discussed the OSHA and NTSP Alliance as part of her presentation during the "Advanced Office Ergonomics: A Macroergonomics Perspective" Workshop at the 2006 Applied Ergonomics Conference in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
  • On October 3, 2005, Frank Bannister, Environmental Health and Safety Programs and Ergonomics Manager, Sprint Nextel gave a presentation on the OSHA and NTSP Alliance to students attending a senior-level ergonomics seminar at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Missouri.
  • On September 13, 2005, NTSP's 2005 International Telecommunications Safety Conference was held in St. Louis, Missouri. Brett Besser, Ergonomist, Salt Lake Technical Center, Directorate of Science, Technology and Medicine, USDOL-OSHA presented "Ergonomics Alliance Update" and "Ergonomics Technical Update." OSHA staff from Region VII, St. Louis, Missouri, Area Office attended the conference.
  • On September 21, 2004, NTSP held the 2004 International Telecommunications Safety Conference in Golden, Colorado. Pamela Baptiste, Senior Industrial Hygienist, Region VIII, Denver, Colorado, Area Office, USDOL-OSHA presented "OSHA Ergonomics Alliances and Enforcement." OSHA had a tabletop display at the conference.
  • Through the Alliance, OSHA provided input to NTSP during its development and updating of Ergonomics Guidelines for Common Job Functions in the Telecommunications Industry, which is posted on the NTSP Web site and linked to from the OSHA and NTSP Alliance Web page on the OSHA Web site.
  • NTSP representatives serve on the editorial board for the Ergonomics: Solutions for Electrical Contractors eTool.

Precision Metalforming Association

The OSHA and Precision Metalforming Association (PMA) Alliance focuses on providing PMA members and others with information, guidance and access to training resources to will help them protect employees' health and safety in the metalforming industry. In particular, the Alliance focuses on ergonomics hazards and lockout/tagout issues, including the prevention of amputations and other injuries.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On March 26, 2007, John Newquist, Assistant Regional Administrator, Cooperative and State Programs, Region V, USDOL-OSHA presented "Enhancing Workplace Safety through OSHA's Cooperative Programs" at the METALFORM Exposition and Conference in Rosemont, Illinois.
  • Through the Alliance, Mary Bauer, Compliance Assistance Specialist (CAS), Region V, Eau Claire, Wisconsin Area Office, USDOL-OSHA and Dana Root, Ergonomist, Region V, USDOL-OSHA developed a slide presentation, "Ergonomics in the Pressroom," specifically for the metalforming industry; including the handouts, "Hazard Zone Jobs Checklist," "Ergonomics Risk Factors Checklist," and "Sprains and Strains Prevention Fact Sheet." The presentation has been given:

On November 10, 2006, Paula White, Director, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA, participated in the roundtable, "Enhancing Workplace Safety through OSHA Voluntary Protection Programs," which was given twice. On November 11, 2006, Paula White, gave the keynote address to the General Assembly and provided an overview of OSHA's cooperative programs, including information about the OSHA and PMA Alliance.
  • Through the Alliance, PMA members published articles about the OSHA and PMA Alliance and the Agency's compliance assistance products and activities in its bi-monthly publication, PMA Update; its bi-weekly publication, MetalForming Xtra Newsletter; and its weekly electronic newsletter, FLASHPoint.
  • PMA representatives serve on the editorial board for the Machine Guarding eTool on the OSHA Web site.

The Roadway Work Zone Safety and Health Partners

OSHA signed The Roadway Work Zone Safety and Health Partners Alliance with the following organizations:

  • Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA)

Through the Alliance, the organizations work together to provide the Alliance Program participants and other government and non-government entities with information, guidance and access to training resources to help protect employees, including Spanish-speaking, and other high-risk or vulnerable "hard-to-reach" workers, from general health and safety hazards and to reduce and prevent exposures to roadway work zone safety and health hazards. The Alliance focuses on flagger safety, safer deployment of traffic control devices, positive protection, night work, work-zone speeding and runovers/backovers

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On April 28, 2008, members of the Alliance observed 2008 Workers Memorial Day (WMD) which is sponsored by the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and other trade unions and recognizes workers who have been killed or injured on the job.   • On January 30, 2008, The Roadway Work Zone Safety and Health Partners representatives participated in the second Alliance Program Construction Roundtable in Washington, D.C. The Roadway Work Zone Safety and Health Partners representatives are participating in the Roundtable's Fall Protection and Design for Safety workgroups.
  • On October 10-12, 2007, representatives from the OSHA Region IV Fort Lauderdale, Florida Area Office staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth at the InterTraffic North America Conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
  • On October 10, 2007, members of the Alliance supported and promoted "Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day," which was sponsored by the Department of Transportation's (DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Safe Tank Alliance

Through the Alliance, API, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Steel Tank Institute/Steel Plate Fabricators Association (STI/SPFA) work with OSHA to promote safe tank entry, cleaning, maintenance, and rescue operations and work within and around petroleum and petrochemical liquid storage tanks. The employees who work with tanks include, but are not limited to, tank owners and operators, tank maintenance and repair workers, tank contractors and rescue personnel.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On November 16, 2006, Chuck Williams, Director, Region VI Houston, Texas South Area Office, USDOL-OSHA presented "Hexavalent Chromium Permissible Exposure Limit – Regulation Overview" at the Pressure Vessel Conference in Houston, Texas.

  • On November 17-18, 2005, Joann Natarajan, Compliance Assistance Specialist, Region VI Austin, Texas Area Office, USDOL-OSHA and Ron Tom, Manager Occupational Safety and Health Consultation (OSHCON) Program, Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers' Compensation staffed the Alliance Program exhibit at the API Contractor Management Conference in Austin, Texas.
  • On October 25, 2005, Ernie Miller, Industrial Hygiene Consultant, Arizona Department of Occupational Safety and Health gave a presentation on the On-site Consultation Program at the 2005 Storage Tank Management and Technology Conference and Safe Tank Entry Workshop in Phoenix, Arizona.

  • Through the Alliance, OSHA and Safe Tank representatives developed a "Safe Tank Entry Best Practices" Seminar, which focuses on safe work practices, lessons learned and new technology being used by the oil and gas industry during tank entry and cleaning operations.   • On November 1-4, 2004, the 2004 Storage Tank Management and Technology Conference and Safe Tank Entry Workshop was held in Nashville, Tennessee. On November 3, 2004, Jess McCluer, Program Analyst, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA made a presentation on the Alliance Program and the activities of the OSHA and Safe Tank Alliance. The Alliance Program had a tabletop display at the Conference.
  • Through the Alliance, API developed a fact sheet, "Fall Prevention for Aboveground Storage Tanks" that was posted on the API Web site and linked to from the OSHA and Safe Tank Alliance Web page on the OSHA Web site.
  • Safe Tank representatives helped develop and serve on the editorial boards for Oil and Gas Well Drilling, Servicing and Storage and Confined Spaces Safety and Health Topics pages on the OSHA Web site.

Sealant Waterproofing and Restoration Institute

The OSHA and Sealant Waterproofing and Restoration Institute (SWR Institute) Alliance addresses improving working conditions for workers who work with sealants, waterproofing, and restoration products by providing information and guidance to help employers protect employees' health-particularly in the areas of reducing and preventing exposure to lead and silica-and safety hazards-particularly in the areas of confined spaces, fall protection, and staging requirements.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On March 5-8, 2006, the SWR Institute 2006 Winter Technical Meeting was held in Bal Harbour, Florida. On March 7, 2006, Luis Santiago, Director, Region IV, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida Area Office, USDOL-OSHA presented "Developing a Site-Specific Safety Plan." Vergie Bain, Compliance Assistance Specialist, Region IV, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida Area Office, USDOL-OSHA staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth.
  • On October 23-25, 2005, the SWR Institute 2005 Fall Technical Meeting was held in San Francisco, California. On October 25, 2006, Domenick Salvatore, Compliance Assistance Specialist, Region III, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Area Office, USDOL-OSHA presented "Don't Be Left Hanging: OSHA's Guide to Self Rescue." Alvan Phillip, Exhibit Manager, Region IX, USDOL-OSHA staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth.
  • On February 28 -March 3, 2005 the SWR Institute 2005 Annual Meeting was held in Puerto Rico. On March 2, 2005, Jose Carpena, Director, Region II, Puerto Rico Area Office, USDOL-OSHA presented "Emergency Response." Representatives from the Region II Puerto Rico Area Office, USDOL-OSHA staffed an Alliance Program tabletop exhibit.
  • On September 19-21, 2004, the SWR Institute Fall Technical Meeting was held in Boston, Massachusetts. On September 19, 2004, Dom Salvatore, Compliance Assistance Specialist, Region III, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Area Office, USDOL-OSHA presented "Respiratory Protection, Life Expectancy for Lungs." The Alliance Program had a tabletop exhibit.
  • On February 29-March 3, 2004, the SWR Institute 2004 Annual Meeting was held in Tucson, Arizona. On March 2, 2004, Dom Salvatore, Compliance Assistance Specialist, Region III, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Area Office, USDOL-OSHA presented an overview of the OSHA and SWR Institute Alliance and "The New Generation of Work Platforms: Mast Scaffolding." The Alliance Program had a tabletop exhibit.
  • On October 28, 2003, Dom Salvatore, Compliance Assistance Specialist, Region III, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Area Office, USDOL-OSHA presented an overview of the OSHA and SWR Institute Alliance emphasizing the importance of confined space entry at the 2003 SWR Institute Fall Technical Meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia.
  • Through the Alliance, SWR Institute developed and distributed the SWR Institute Safety and Health Manual to SWR Institute members. The manual covers topics such as hazard communication, confined space, fall protection, recordkeeping, personal protective equipment, respiratory protection and scaffolding.
  • SWR Institute promoted the OSHA and SWR Institute Alliance and OSHA's compliance assistance resources through many articles in its monthly publication, Member Briefs.
  • SWR Institute representatives helped develop and serve on the editorial board of the Sealants, Waterproofing and Restoration Industry Safety and Health Topics page on the OSHA Web site.
To meet the goals of promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:
  • On July 8, 2004, SWR Institute participated in the Alliance Program's Construction Roundtable, in Washington, DC. During the meeting, Alliance Program participants discussed working together on cooperative projects for the construction industry. SWR Institute representatives are participating in the Roundtable's Fall Protection and Design for Safety Workgroups.

Shipbuilders Council of America

OSHA and the Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) along with the American Shipbuilding Association (ASA) and the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) work together to provide information and guidance to help protect shipyard employees' health and safety by minimizing or eliminating exposure to shipyard safety and health hazards.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On September 28, 2006, the SCA Safety Seminar was held in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. Mel Lischefski, Director, Region V, Appleton, Wisconsin, Area Office, USDOL-OSHA, updated 25 attendees on the on the revised hexavalent chromium standards, and Amy Wangdahl, Office of Maritime Standards, Directorate of Standards and Guidance, USDOL-OSHA updated the attendees on maritime regulatory issues.
  • SCA, ASA and NSRP worked with OSHA and members of the Agency's Strategic Partnerships in Region III (South Tidewater Association of Ship Repairers), Region VI (SCA) and Region IX (Port of San Diego Ship Repair Association) to develop the storyboard and script for the second computer-animated hazard-awareness video based on actual shipyard fatalities. In April 2005, over 400 copies of the video were distributed to SCA, ASA and NSRP members and non-members and the members of the Strategic Partnerships. On September 23, 2005, Steve Butler, Director, Office of Maritime Enforcement USDOL-OSHA promoted the video during the Film & Multimedia presentations at the XVIIth World Congress on Safety and Health at Work and 2005 National Safety Council Congress & Expo, which was held September 17-23, 2005 in Orlando, Florida.
  • On September 13, 2005, Joe Daddura, Safety Specialist, Office of Maritime Standards, Directorate of Standards and Guidance, USDOL-OSHA presented "OSHA Standard on Fire Protection in Shipyard Employment" at the SCA's Safety Seminar in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.
  • On March 9, 2005, the SCA's Safety Seminar was held in Mobile, Alabama. Jim Maddux, Director, Office of Maritime Standards, Directorate of Standards and Guidance, USDOL-OSHA presented "OSHA Standard on Fire Protection in Shipyard Employment" and Jess McCluer, then Program Analyst, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA presented "OSHA Maritime Alliances."
  • On September 22, 2004, Jess McCluer, then Program Analyst, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA, presented "OSHA Maritime Alliances," at the SCA's Safety Seminar in Morgan City, Louisiana.
  • On September 21, 2004, John Miles, then Region VI Administrator, Dallas, Texas, USDOL-OSHA discussed the application process, requirements and benefits of VPP from both the industry and government perspectives at a Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) Seminar sponsored by the OSHA and SCA, ASA and NSRP Alliances for members of maritime industry-related Alliances at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems-Avondale Operations in Pascagoula, Louisiana.
  • On September 13, 2004, Tom Pope, then Area Director, Region III, Norfolk, Virginia Area Office, USDOL-OSHA; Captain Teresa Preston, Director, Safety, Environment & Quality, Atlantic Marine, Inc. (SCA); and Jim Thornton, Director, Environment, Health & Safety, Northrop Grumman Newport News (ASA/NSRP) presented a workshop, "Shipyard Alliances with OSHA," at the National Safety Council's, another Alliance participant, Congress and Expo in New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • On June 14-18, 2004, SCA members staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth during the 2004 OSHA Compliance Assistance Training Sessions in Falls Church, Virginia.
  • On March 10, 2004, Clyde Payne, Area Director, Region IV, Jackson, Mississippi Area Office, USDOL-OSHA presented "Maritime Industry Inspections and Area Alliance Update" at the SCA's Safety Seminar in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
  • Through the Alliance, members of SCA, ASA and NSRP worked with members of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), another Alliance Program participant, to develop "Safety Alert: Deadly Hydrogen Sulfide and Shipyard Sewage" which was posted in July 2006 on the AIHA Web site and linked to the OSHA and AIHA Alliance Web page on the OSHA Web site.
  • Through the Alliance, SCA, ASA and NSRP helped develop the Fire Protection, Barge Cleaning, Ship Building and Ship Breaking modules and serve on the editorial board for OSHA's Shipyard Employment eTool, which is posted on the OSHA Web site.
  • SCA, ASA and NSRP members serve on the editorial boards for the Maritime Industry and Shipbuilding and Repair Safety and Health Topics pages on the OSHA Web site.
To meet the goals of promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:
  • On May 7, 2007, Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA spoke to the OSHA and Alliance Program participants and other safety and health professionals during the 2007 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week kick-off event at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. Sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), an Alliance Program participant, and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace. SCA, along with a number of other Alliance Program participants, supported the Week.
  • On May 1, 2006, Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA spoke to OSHA and Alliance Program participants and other safety and health professionals during the 2006 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week Kick-Off event at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. SkillsUSA

Through this Alliance, OSHA and SkillsUSA provide career and technical educators and their students with materials, guidance and access to training resources that affect the occupational safety and health of young workers.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On October 20, 2006, five student representatives from Maryland's Calvert Career Center and four students from Virginia's Edison Career Center served on a focus group convened by the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. with the Federal Network for Young Worker Safety and Health (FedNet). Principals from both schools and two SkillsUSA advisors also attended the meeting.
  • On June 18-24, 2006, the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference and TECHSPO were held in Kansas City, Missouri. Charles Adkins, Regional Administrator, Region VII, USDOL-OSHA provided an OSHA update at the opening breakfast; Dr. Robert Nester, Health Scientist, Office of Science, Technology and Medicine, USDOL-OSHA judged the students competing in the health care field; OSHA Training Institute (OTI) representatives provided the 30-hour OSHA 500 Trainer-the-Trainer Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry course for teachers, and Veneta Chatmon, Office of Communication, USDOL-OSHA staffed the OSHA and SkillsUSA exhibit booth.

  • On February 6-9, 2006, SkillsUSA and Virginia OSHA representatives provided the 30-hour OSHA 501 Train-the-Trainer Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry course for Northern Virginia Career and Technical Education instructors in Leesburg, Virginia.

Society for Chemical Hazard Communication

The OSHA and Society for Chemical Hazard Communication (SCHC) Alliance focuses on working with small businesses and providing information and education to address issues associated with hazard communication and material safety data sheets (MSDSs) in the workplace. The Alliance also works to distribute information and increase awareness about the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On September 12-13, 2006, the SCHC 2006 Fall Meeting was held in Arlington, Virginia. On September 12, 2006, Jennifer Silk, then Deputy Director, Directorate of Standards and Guidance, USDOL-OSHA served as a speaker on a panel, "GHS UPDATE United States." The Alliance Program had an exhibit booth.
  • On March 27, 2006, Ann Brockhaus, President, SCHC, gave a presentation on the OSHA and SCHC Alliance at the SCHC 2006 Spring Meeting in Orlando, Florida.
  • On January 10, 2006 Ann Brockhaus, Vice President, SCHC, presented "The GHS - What You Need to Know Now" at the National Capital Chapter ASSE and the Chesapeake Area Biological Safety Association Meeting in Laurel, Maryland.

Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc.

The OSHA and the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) Alliance focuses on providing SPI's members and others with information, guidance and access to training resources to promote machine safety particularly in identifying machinery hazards and providing potential solutions to reduce injuries (e.g., lacerations, burns, amputations). In addition, the organizations work together to raise awareness of hazard communication issues in the workplace.

To meet the training and education goals of the Alliance:
  • On July 16, 2004, Jim Washam, then Machine Guarding Coordinator, Region V, Cincinnati, Ohio Area Office, USDOL-OSHA and Wayne Wilson, Southern Industries, Inc. presented the Machine Safety for the Plastic Roll-Fed and Inline Thermoforming Train-the-Trainer course at Placon Corporation in Madison, Wisconsin.
  • On April 28, 2004, Jim Washam, then Machine Guarding Coordinator, Region V, Cincinnati, Ohio Area Office, USDOL-OSHA and Wayne Wilson, United Southern Industries, Inc. presented the Machine Safety for Extrusion Train-the-Trainer course at the SPI Sheet Producers Division's Spring Technical Conference in Chesterfield, Missouri.
  • On November 18, 2003, Jim Washam, then Machine Guarding Coordinator, Region V, Cincinnati, Ohio Area Office, USDOL-OSHA and Wayne Wilson, United Southern Industries, Inc. presented the Machine Safety for Injection Molding Machines Train-the-Trainer course at OSHA's Education Center at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio.

  • On June 26, 2003, members of the Alliance conducted a workshop, "Machine Safety for Injection Molding Machines," at NPE 2003: The International Plastics Showcase in Chicago, Illinois.
  • Through the Alliance Program, OSHA and SPI developed slide presentations, "Injection Molding Machine Safety Training Course," "Rollstock and Sheet Extrusion Machine Safety Training Course," and "Roll-Fed and Inline Thermoforming Machine Safety Training Course."
To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On June 22, 2006, NPE 2006: International Plastics Showcase was held in Chicago, Illinois. Cathleen Cronin, Chief, Division of Training and Educational Development, Office of Training and Education, USDOL-OSHA presented "OSHA and SPI Alliance and OSHA's Susan Harwood Training Grant Program" as part of a panel on workforce development grants and training resources. In addition, Jim Washam, then Machine Guarding Coordinator, Region V, USDOL-OSHA and Wayne Wilson, United Southern Industries, Inc. taught workshops on rollstock and sheet extrusion machinery safety and roll-fed and inline thermoforming machinery safety and on injection molding machinery safety and blow molding machinery safety. Bill Coullehan, Compliance Assistance Specialist, Calumet City, Illinois Area Office, USDOL-OSHA staffed an OSHA and SPI Alliance Program exhibit booth.
  • On September 28-30, 2004, SPI and OSHA representatives staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth at Plastics USA 2004 in Chicago, Illinois.
  • On June 15, 2004, OSHA held Compliance Assistance Training Sessions in Falls Church, Virginia. Susan Howe, Senior Technical Director, Worker and Product Safety, SPI presented "Writing a Successful Alliance Agreement" and shared OSHA and SPI Alliance success stories and best practices. SPI had an exhibit booth.
  • On April 27, 2004, the SPI Sheet Producers Division's Spring Technical Conference was held in Chesterfield, Missouri. Susan Howe, Senior Technical Director, Worker and Product Safety, SPI, presented "The OSHA and SPI Alliance." Representatives from the OSHA and SPI Alliance attended the conference.
  • On June 24-25, 2003, NPE 2003: The International Plastics Showcase was held in Chicago, Illinois. SPI and OSHA Alliance representatives conducted a workshop, "How to Develop an Ergonomics Process." At "Face to Face with OSHA," an informal workshop, John Hermanson, then OSHA Region V Area Director, Chicago North, Illinois, Area Office, USDOL-OSHA addressed questions concerning OSHA program areas, such as lock-out/tag-out, ergonomics and cooperative programs. OSHA and SPI representatives staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth.
  • SPI representatives helped develop the Horizontal Injection Molding Machines and the Thermoforming Machines modules for the Machine Guarding eTool on the OSHA Web site and serve on the eTool's editorial board.
  • SPI representatives helped develop and serve on the editorial board for the Assistance for the Plastics Industry Safety and Health Topics page on the OSHA Web site.

Tree Care Industry Association, Inc.

The OSHA and Tree Care Industry Association, Inc. (TCIA) Alliance focuses on providing TCIA's members and others in the tree care industry, including small businesses, with information, guidance, and access to training resources that help them protect employees' health and safety. In particular, the Alliance addresses reducing and preventing exposure to safety and health issues related to tree removal and electrical, falls, and struck-by hazards.

To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On November 8-10, 2007, Thomas G. Hozebin, Occupational Safety and Health Manager, Connecticut Department of Labor, Division of Occupational Safety and Health (CONN-OSHA); and John Able, Occupational Safety Training Specialist, Connecticut Department of Labor, CONN-OSHA staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth at the TCI EXPO 2007 Trade Show and Conference in Hartford, Connecticut.
  • On September 20, 2007, Rob Swick, Program Analyst, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA presented an Alliance Update during the TCIA Certified Tree Care Program in Linthicum Heights, Maryland.
  • Through the Alliance, Peter Gerstenberger, Vice President, TCIA, presented Update" at the following TCIA Certified Tree Care Safety Professional Workshops:
    • On August 22, 2007, in San Jose, California.
    • On March 21, 2007, in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
    • On March 15, 2007, in Chicago, Illinois.
    • On February 22, 2007, in Charlotte, North Carolina.
    • On December 13, 2006, in Cleveland, Ohio.
    • On November 29, 2006, in Hartford, Connecticut.
  • Through the Alliance, Peter Gerstenberger, Vice President, TCIA, presented "Hazards Faced in the Arboriculture Industry" at the following OSHA Region I Safety Summits:
    • On March 30, 2007 in Newport, Rhode Island.
    • On March 28, 2007 in Portland, Maine.
  • On November 10, 2006, Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr. , USDOL-OSHA presented "OSHA's Alliance Program" at the TCI EXPO 2006 Trade Show and Conference in Baltimore, Maryland. Following his speech, Mr. Foulke signed the OSHA and TCIA Alliance agreement.
  • TCIA representatives helped develop and serve on the editorial board of the Tree Care Industry Safety and Health Topics page on the OSHA Web site.

Washington Division of URS Corporation (Formerly Washington Group International)

The OSHA and Washington Division of URS Corporation (formerly Washington Group International) Alliance encourages the organizations to share information, guidance, best practices, access to training resources and technical knowledge to help protect employees' safety and health. In particular, the Alliance is addressing the areas of cranes and rigging, hearing protection and ergonomics within the engineering and construction industry.

To meet the training and education goals of the Alliance:
  • On June 5-6, 2007, Rick Callor, Corporate Trainer, Washington Division of URS Corporation (formerly Washington Group International) taught the OSHA 10-Hour Construction Outreach Training Program to U.S. Army representatives at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal in Denver, Colorado.
  • On February 5-6, 2007, Rick Callor, Corporate Trainer, Washington Group International taught the OSHA 10-Hour Construction Outreach Training Program at the Western Energy Training Center at the College of Eastern Utah in Price, Utah.
  • October 2006–January 2007. Van Howell, Region X, Boise, Idaho Area Office, USDOL-OSHA, Willie Piispanen, Washington Group International and Dr. Dale Stephenson, Boise State University, presented an ASP/CSP Safety Fundamentals class at OSHA's Boise, Idaho Area Office.
  • On June 27-30, 2005, the OSHA 30-Hour Construction Outreach Training Program was held in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Washington Group International representatives assisted Region X Boise, Idaho Area Office, USDOL-OSHA in arranging the OSHA Construction Outreach Train-the Trainer Program for Idaho educators. In addition, OSHA's Training Institute provided an instructor for the course.
  • On March 7-8, 2005, the OSHA 10-Hour Outreach Training Programs for General Industry and the Construction Industry were held in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Washington Group International representatives worked with the Idaho State Department of Education, Division of Professional-Technical Education to organize, teach, and host the training programs for trade school educators in Idaho.
  • On February 22-23, 2005, the OSHA 10-Hour Outreach Training Programs for General Industry and the Construction Industry were held in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. Washington Group International representatives worked with the Idaho State Department of Education, Division of Professional-Technical Education to organize, teach, and host the training programs for trade school educators in Idaho.
  • Washington Group International has provided its 16-hour Safety Qualified Supervisor Training class, which includes OSHA's 10-hour Construction Outreach Training Program, to Washington Group and OSHA staff on several occasions. A total of 83 attendees participated in the following training sessions:
    • December 2-3, 2003 in Denver, Colorado,
    • April 28 - 29, 2004 in Birmingham, Alabama,
    • June 2-3, 2004 in Seattle, Washington,
    • December 10-11, 2004 in Arlington Virginia.
To meet the outreach and communication goals of the Alliance:
  • On October 4-6, 2006, the 2006 Intermountain Northwest Safety Conference was held in Boise, Idaho. During the event, Van Howell, Region X, Boise, Idaho Area Office, USDOL-OSHA was the Technical Session chair. The Washington Group International was the sponsor for the conference's OSHA technical track and also had an information booth during the event. More than 175 safety and health professionals participated in the 3-day conference.
  • On July 24-27, 2006, the Washington Group International's Safety Workshop was held in Boise, Idaho. On July 24, 2006, Paula White, Director, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA presented "OSHA Cooperative Program Update" and discussed the Agency's Voluntary Protection Programs and its Challenge Pilot, Strategic Partnerships and the Alliance Program. On July 25, 2006, Stewart Burkhammer, Director, Office of Construction Services, USDOL-OSHA presented "OSHA Construction Update" and highlighted the Alliances that are impacting the construction industry.
  • On June 11-14, 2006, the ASSE's Professional Development Conference, Safety 2006, was held in Seattle, Washington. On June 14, 2006, Stewart Burkhammer, Director, Office of Construction Services, Directorate of Construction, USDOL-OSHA and Brad Giles, Vice President for Environmental Safety, Health and Security, Washington Group International participated in a panel presentation, "Designing for Construction Worker Safety." On June 12, 2006, Stewart Burkhammer, Director, Office of Construction Services, Directorate of Construction, USDOL-OSHA and Brad Giles, Vice President for Environmental Safety, Health and Security, Washington Group International participated in a panel roundtable, "OSHA Construction Update."
  • On June 12-15, 2005, the ASSE's Professional Development Conference, Safety 2005, was held in New Orleans, Louisiana. On June 15, 2005, Stewart Burkhammer, Director, Office of Construction Services, Director of Construction, USDOL-OSHA; Brad Giles, Vice President for Environmental Safety, Health and Security, Washington Group International; and a representative from the OSHA and Board of Certified Safety Professionals and Council on Certification of Health, Environmental and Safety Technologists Alliance made presentations during a conference workshop, "Supporting SH&E Careers in Government."
  • On June 14-18, 2004, the 2004 OSHA Compliance Assistance Training Sessions were held in Falls Church, Virginia. On June 16, 2004, Willie Piispanen, Corporate Industrial Hygienist, Washington Group International gave a presentation during the workshop, "Industrial Hygiene Intervention for Lead, Arsenic and Crystalline Silica in Construction," and discussed methods for dealing with lead, arsenic and crystalline silica in construction and remediation projects.
  • On March 9, 2004, Region I's Construction Roundtable was held in Boston, Massachusetts. The Washington Group presented "Economics of Safety."
  • On February 9-10, 2004, the Washington Group International's Safety Workshop was held in Boise, Idaho. Workshop speakers included Richard Terrill, Region X Administrator, USDOL-OSHA; Dave Lauriski, then Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Mine Safety and Health Administration, USDOL; and Dave Stanton, Safety Manager for Middle East Operations, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
  • On June 9-13, 2003, the 2nd Annual OSHA Compliance Assistance Conference was held in Vienna, Virginia. On June 11, 2003, Brad Giles, Vice President for Environmental Safety and Health, Washington Group International was a speaker during a workshop, "Alliances Add Value," and discussed the reasons for forming an Alliance, lessons learned, maintaining momentum, and managing resources. The Washington Group International also exhibited during conference.
  • Washington Group International representatives serve on the editorial boards for the Accident Investigations; Construction – Crane; Derrick and Hoist Safety; Construction – Scaffolding; Crane, Derrick, and Hoist Safety; Fall Protection; Heavy Metals; Safety and Health Programs; Scaffolding; Silica, Crystalline; Trenching and Excavation; and Workplace Violence Safety and Health Topics pages on OSHA's Web site.
To meet the goals of promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:
  • On December 11-15, 2006, the Safety Fest of the Great Northwest was held in Boise, Idaho. On December 11, 2006, Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA presented the Safety Fest's opening address. On December 12, 2006, Richard Terrill, Regional Administrator, Region X, Seattle, Washington participated in the event. In addition, approximately 92 private companies and 18 government and non-profit groups sent employees to the event who attended numerous construction-related training classes free-of-charge. Twenty-four construction-related companies exhibited their products and services in a vendor area.
  • On November 29-December 2, 2005, the Safety Fest of the Great Northwest was held in Boise, Idaho. On November 12, 2005. The Honorable Governor Dirk Kempthorne, Richard Terrell, Regional Administrator, Region X, Seattle, Washington, USDOL-OSHA; Bill Bankhead, Compliance Assistance Specialist, Region X, Boise, Idaho Area Office, USDOL-OSHA; and Brad Giles, Vice President of Environmental, Safety, Health and Security, Washington Group International participated in the event. During the Safety Fest, 24 training classes were presented free-of-charge and 167 attendees completed the OSHA 10-Hour Construction Outreach Training Program, including 36 participants in two Spanish language presentations.
  • Washington Group International participated in the Alliance Program's Construction Roundtable on July 8, 2004 in Washington, D.C. During the meeting, Alliance Program participants discussed working together on cooperative projects for the construction industry. Washington Group representatives are participating in the Roundtable's Fall Protection and Design for Safety workgroups. Through the Design for Safety Workgroup, the Washington Group helped produce a case study, "Washington Group International Designs and Builds a Mixed-Waste Treatment Facility," that was posted on OSHA's Web site.
