Ambassador James B. Culbertson is the 64th Ambassador of the United States of America to the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Sworn in as Ambassador on July 10, 2008, in his home town Winston Salem, North Carolina, he presented his credentials to Her Majesty Queen Beatrix on August 13, 2008.
Mr. Culbertson was nominated by President Bush to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands on May 27, 2008, and the Senate approved his nomination on June 26, 2008.
Born in Goldsboro, North Carolina on May 27, 1938, Mr. Culbertson graduated from The Citadel in 1960 with a B.A. in political science, and subsequently served his country as an officer in the U.S. Army Military Intelligence from 1960 to 1962.
After leaving the Army, Mr. Culbertson returned to North Carolina and worked in the private sector for several years before founding Financial Computing in 1974, eventually retiring in 2000. He also served on the North Carolina Banking Commission (1973-79), the North Carolina Board of Economic Development (1985-93), the National Federation of Independent Businessmen (1988-93), the Fund for American Studies Board of Trustees (1988-present) and the American Battle Monuments Commission (2005-present).
Mr. Culbertson first visited the Netherlands in 1970 as a representative of The American Council of Young Political Leaders. This group was part of The Atlantic Council of Young Political Leaders. He served on its board from 1973-1979.
Mr. Culbertson has been active in the Republican Party from a young age, and has served on a number of state and national committees. He was the North Carolina Co-Chairman for the Bush campaign in 2000, Chairman in 2004 and one of eight Co-Chairs for his inauguration in 2005.
Mr. Culbertson is married and has one daughter and two grandsons.
