Ambassador Untermeyer began his career as a political reporter for the Houston Chronicle and as a member of the Texas House of Representatives, to which he was elected in 1976 from a district in Houston.

When Ronald Reagan became president of the United States in 1981, Ambassador Untermeyer went to Washington to serve as executive assistant to then-Vice President George H.W. Bush. Three years later, President Reagan appointed him assistant secretary of the Navy for manpower and reserve affairs. During the administration of the President George H.W.
