CINCINNATI -- Furthering the safety and health of electrical industry workers in Cincinnati is the goal of an alliance signed between the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Independent Electrical Contractors of Greater Cincinnati (IEC). OSHA's alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers. Through alliances, trade and professional organizations, businesses, labor organizations and education institutions are able to participate in a voluntary cooperative relationship with OSHA for training and outreach aimed at preventing workplace injuries and illnesses. "This is an opportunity for OSHA and members of the electrical industry to come together through forums, roundtable discussions and meetings to discuss the safety and health issues faced by electrical workers," said Richard Gilgrist, OSHA's area director in Cincinnati. "Both OSHA and the IEC are committed to reducing injuries sustained from electrical hazards." One of the goals of the two-year alliance is to develop information that will help IEC member companies and their employees recognize and prevent electrical safety hazards. Safety and health training and education programs will be provided as well as sharing the best practices and innovative solutions in promoting workplace safety. The alliance will also promote and encourage participation in OSHA's cooperative programs. These include compliance assistance, safety and health consultation programs, the Voluntary Protection Programs and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP).
