Overview

The OSHA and AAOHN Alliance focuses on promoting healthy and safe workplaces, for large and small businesses, especially in the areas of emergency management, musculoskeletal disorders, and workplace violence. In addition, OSHA and AAOHN are helping businesses promote wellness and prevent illnesses and injuries within the workplace.

In addition to these formal meetings, the Alliance coordinators from both groups maintained regular contact throughout the reporting period to monitor the Alliance's progress and results.

    Outreach and Communication Goals


    • Disseminate health and safety information and guidance directly to businesses and through meetings (e.g. Chamber of Commerce events, Rotary Club meetings), conferences, events, and print and electronic media, including links from OSHA's and AAOHN's Web sites.

    OSHA and AAOHN Alliance Web Site


    The OSHA and AAOHN Alliance Web page on OSHA's Web site includes links to related documents, activities and events, products and resources, and milestones and successes. This Web site is kept up-to-date on a regular basis. For more information on the number of site visits please see the "Alliance Program Reach" table on page 5.

    AAOHN Web Site (http://www.aaohn.org/)

    The AAOHN Web site features links to AAOHN news releases on the AAOHN – OSHA Alliance. AAOHN is also discussing developing an AAOHN - OSHA Web page on the AAOHN Web site similar to the OSHA – AAOHN Alliance Web page on OSHA's Web site.

    AAOHN's Ergonomic Web site

    AAOHN launched www.ergoresources.org Web site on June 2, 2003. The Web site was the first initiative of the OSHA – AAOHN Alliance. It is a one-stop shop for occupational and environmental health nurses and other professionals who manage workplace health and safety programs to find the most current information on ergonomics and worksite design suggestions.

    PowerPoint® Presentations

    Through the OSHA-AAOHN Alliance the following PowerPoint® presentations were developed and distributed to OSHA's National, Regional, Area and State Plan States, Compliance Assistance Specialists and to the AAOHN chapters.
    • Violence Prevention At Work: What Employers Need To Know?
    • Planning For the Worse Case Scenario: What You Need To Know About All-Hazard Preparedness.

    Articles on the OSHA and AAOHN Alliance have appeared in a number of printed and online publications, including: OSHA and AAOHN news releases, Safety.BLR.com, and occupationalhazards.com. For more information on the articles, please see the "Alliance Program Reach" table on page 5.

    • Encourage AAOHN chapters to build relationships with OSHA's Regional and Area Offices to address health and safety issues, including emergency management, MSDs, and workplace violence.

    AAOHN provides a chapter list on the AAOHN Web site which is updated regularly. The OSHA – AAOHN implementation team is discussing ways to develop relationships with OSHA's Regional, Area and State Plan States

    • Develop electronic assistance tools for OSHA's Web page that address health and safety issues, including emergency management, MSDs, and workplace violence.

    Representatives from the OSHA-AAOHN Alliance have reviewed and commented on several of OSHA's Safety and Health Topics pages and eTools, including: Workplace Violence, Tuberculosis, Ergonomics and Evacuation Plans and Procedures. AAOHN also provided comments on the following: Managing Anthrax Contaminants in Health Care Facilities, Extension of OMB Approval of Collection of Information Requirements and Nationwide Site-Specific Targeting Program.

    • Encourage AAOHN chapters to act as resources for OSHA's Training Institute and Education Centers to assist in the promotion and presentation of health and safety courses, including emergency management, MSDs, and workplace violence.
    The OSHA and AAOHN Alliance implementation team are collecting and developing information which can be incorporated into OSHA courses.

    Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health Goals

    • Raise awareness of and demonstrate commitment to improving the health and safety of the workplace and reducing injuries and illnesses whenever AAOHN and OSHA leaders address groups.

    AAOHN representative, Nancy N. Menzel, PhD gave a presentation on "Stress and Pain Management Intervention for Back Pain in Nursing Staff."

    • Convene or participate in forums, round table discussions, or stakeholder meetings on health and safety issues, including emergency management, MSDs, and workplace violence to help develop innovative solutions in the workplace and to provide input on health and safety issues.

    John Henshaw, OSHA's former Assistant Secretary signed the OSHA - AAOHN national Alliance. In addition, he gave a presentation, "OSHA Update" to the attendees.

    • Encourage AAOHN's members to act as industry liaisons and resources for OSHA's cooperative programs and Compliance Assistance Specialists.
    The OSHA and AAOHN Alliance implementation team has not started work on programs or projects to address this goal.

  2. Executive summary

    Through the Alliance Program, OSHA and AAOHN are working together to address important safety and health issues including, ergonomics, workplace violence and emergency preparedness. The organizations have established very effective lines of communication and a successful working relationship.

    Through the Alliance, OSHA and AAOHN increased awareness of the compliance assistance resources and programs that are offered by both organizations. AAOHN has demonstrated their committed to the Alliance Program by supplying information and resources as requested by the Agency including, providing expertise on OSHA's Safety and Health Topics pages and eTools and document review. In addition, AAOHN developed and shared PowerPoint® presentations with OSHA's Regional, Area and State Plan States and developed the ergo database, www.ergoresources.org.

    The speaking and exhibiting opportunities are invaluable to the success of the OSHA – AAOHN Alliance as was proven in 2003. John Henshaw's presentation during the AOHC conference in May 2003 provided an excellent vehicle for speaking directly to occupational health professionals regarding the Agency's outreach efforts. In addition, Dr. Nancy Menzel, representing the AAOHN-OSHA Alliance presentation during OSHA's National Advisory Committee on Ergonomics showed the Associations' willingness to work with and educate the Agency's staff and others on workplace safety and health issues.

IV. Upcoming Milestones

During the upcoming year the OSHA- AAOHN Alliance is planning a number of activities to continue promoting healthy and safe workplaces, particularly in the areas of emergency management, and workplace violence.

The OSHA-AAOHN Alliance will continue its focus on musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace by updating information on the OSHA-AAOHN Alliance Webpage and on the AAOHN Website, ergoresources.org. AAOHN is discussing developing an AAOHN – OSHA Alliance Web page on the AAOHN Web site. Additionally, representatives from AAOHN have agreed to review OSHA's Safety and Health Topics pages and eTools and provide OSHA a list of Topic pages editorial boards on which AAOHN members would like to participate. AAOHN members have also agreed to continue reviewing and providing expert input on OSHA safety and health documents, as requested.

The OSHA - AAOHN implementation team is developing plans to promote the Alliance through a number of speaking and exhibiting opportunities including, the AAOHN Symposium and Expo, April 29 – May 6, 2005 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and at AAOHN chapter meetings.

The OSHA and AAOHN Alliance implementation team members will look for opportunities to work with other Alliance Program participants on projects related to a number of occupational safety and health issues, including an Alliance ergonomic roundtable which is expected to be held in the spring of 2005.
