The Brady Law requires a background check and up to a five-day waiting period before a person can buy a handgun. Development of the National Instant Background Check System authorized in the Brady Law is funded through the Violent Crime Control Act of 1994. Wisconsin has established a state-wide background check system which allows firearms dealers to call in with the prospective purchaser's name and date of birth.
