FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AG TUESDAY, MARCH 7, 1995 (202) 616-2771 TDD (202) 514-1888 Ohioan Named to Senior Justice Department Position WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Native Clevelander, Kent Markus, 36, has been named Acting Assistant Attorney General for Legislative Affairs at the U.S. Justice Department, effective immediately. Markus replaces Sheila Anthony who announced her resignation last week. He is expected to serve until a permanent replacement for Anthony is nominated and confirmed by the Senate. In just over a year at the Justice Department, Markus has worked on the staffs of the Deputy and Associate Attorneys General, handling major management and policy projects. He coordinated the Justice Department's efforts to implement the Brady Law and last year's Crime Bill. He established the Department's new Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) office, which is responsible for meeting President Clinton's pledge to put 100,000 new police officers on the street. In naming Markus to the post, Attorney General Janet Reno said, "Sheila Anthony will certainly be missed. Still, we're fortunate to have someone of Kent's energy, humor and proven managerial capabilities to step in to run this critical division of the Justice Department. His understanding of the law, the Congress, and goals of this Department and Administration make him ideally suited for the position." Markus will serve as one of eleven Assistant Attorneys General at the Department of Justice who manage the day to day operations of the various Justice Department components. His responsiblities will include advising the Attorney General on her legislative agenda as well as reviewing legislation that impacts the policies of the Department. Prior to his work at the Justice Department, Markus was the Chief of Staff at the Democratic National Committee. He also served as Chief of Staff for former Ohio Attorney General Lee Fisher from 1990 to 1992. He is a graduate of Northwestern University and an Honors graduate of Harvard Law School. His wife, Susan Gilles, is a visiting professor of law at Washington & Lee University, on leave from Capital Law School in Columbus. # # #
