Welcome to the Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) web site.
To help you locate your areas of interest, we have included short descriptions of OBO's five offices --- Planning and Development, Real Estate, Project Execution, Operations and Management, and Resource Management --- and their divisions.
OBO has been moving forward with a new vision of accountability and performance. We have implemented a number of initiatives and new practices --- introduced a business case requirement into our decision making process, fast tracked projects and reduced costs, inaugurated an Industry Advisory Panel, and published the first Long-Range Overseas Buildings Plan --- to name a few. Our challenges are worldwide, and we are making progress in every region.
Providing safe, secure, and functional facilities for our employees and their families at posts abroad is our goal. The need for substantial investment in secure overseas facilities was tragically demonstrated in August 1998 by the terrorist attacks on our embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. Those bombings killed 224 people, including 43 of our employees. In September 2001, the horror of terrorism was brought home to our own soil.
America's interests and threats to America's security have changed. Our embassies were once focused on traditional reporting and consular services to Americans living and traveling abroad. Today, our missions overseas serve as platforms for a much broader range of activities, carried out by multiple agencies, all aimed at helping to shape a more secure, free, and prosperous world.
OBO's objective is to support U.S. foreign policy efforts and the people who carry them out around the world. Our people abroad are the front line customers, but we have stakeholders in every corner --- other U.S. Government agencies, the United States Congress, the construction industry and related businesses, and the American taxpayers.
As you explore our web site, please know that all of us in OBO are committed to the stewardship of our nation's overseas facilities, and to the safety, security, and success of those who represent our country abroad.
