Pohnpei Reopens Airports to Flights
Pohnpei, FSM (May 23, 2008) - According to Pacific Magazine,
Pohnpei International Airport has been reopened to air service following removal
of the disabled Asia Pacific Airlines cargo jet.
Continental Micronesia's regular Island Hopper flight from Honolulu touched
down at Pohnpei Thursday afternoon, the first time in five days that a Continental
flight had serviced Pohnpei, the capital of the Federated States of Micronesia.
The APA Boeing-737 ran off the short 6,000-foot runway and came to a stop with
its nose gear in the lagoon water at the end of the runway late Friday afternoon
(May 16).
Airline and airport officials were not successful in moving the plane until
late Wednesday that allowed the airport to reopen Thursday. Four of Continental's
regular flights connected Pohnpei with Guam and Honolulu had to overfly the
island.
There were not fatalities during the accident. Details on the extent of the
damage to the plane were not immediately available.
