About the Office: The Northern District of California is one of the largest U.S. Attorney’s Office in the country with 110 attorneys located in three offices: San Francisco; Oakland; and San Jose. The Office prosecutes federal crimes and defends and pursues the interests of the United States in civil cases.

Responsibilities and Opportunity Offered: Employment with the U.S. Attorney’s Office offers a unique and challenging experience for the highly motivated attorney: an opportunity to work on their own caseload and handle their own trials. Working in the Criminal Division, Oakland Branch, the Special Assistant United States Attorney (SAUSA) will be part of a dedicated team helping to enforce Federal criminal laws. The SAUSA will receive substantial training in investigating and prosecuting federal crimes, and will have the opportunity to attend conferences with SAUSAs and AUSAs from districts across the country. After this one-year term expires, SAUSAs often obtain full-time employment as AUSAs in other districts.

Travel: Occasional travel may be required.

Salary Information: This is a one-year appointment without compensation; uncompensated SAUSAs cannot be considered by this office for a permanent AUSA position for two years after expiration of the SAUSA’s one-year appointment.

Location: Oakland, with the possibility of some cases in San Francisco.

Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses will not be authorized.
