EXPERIENCED PROSECUTOR
NEEDED TO SERVE AS A RESIDENT
LEGAL ADVISOR IN MONROVIA, LIBERIA


The Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training (OPDAT), Criminal Division, U.S. Department of Justice, seeks an experienced DOJ Trial Attorney or Assistant United States Attorney to serve as a Resident Legal Advisor (RLA) in Monrovia, Liberia. This assignment is for a term of one year with the possibility of an extension contingent upon the availability of funding. (This is an unaccompanied, reimbursable detail.)

The RLA represents the U.S. Department of Justice and OPDAT in the implementation of an OPDAT justice sector assistance program in order to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the U.S. and Liberia on criminal justice matters and to raise Liberia’s level of compliance with international anti-crime norms and obligations, particularly in the area of corruption. The RLA will work with appropriate Liberian officials to analyze, develop, and implement an effective anti-corruption regime. This will likely involve analysis of and advice on pending anti-corruption legislation, codes of conduct for judges and prosecutors, and other related and potentially affected criminal statutes, codes, laws, and regulations.

An applicant must have excellent interpersonal skills; possess the ability to function effectively in a challenging physical environment; be mature and self-sufficient; be able to efficiently initiate and manage work projects; and possess extensive prosecutorial experience. Experience in handling corruption matters involving public officials is essential. Comparative law or other experience gained working within an African context is desired, but not essential.
