TO SERVE ON A 90-DAY DETAIL


The Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, is seeking experienced attorneys for a detail of ninety (90) days to work in the Electronic Surveillance Unit (ESU) on Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigations. The ESU is located in the Office of Enforcement Operations. These positions are based in Washington, D.C. . Applicants must be currently employed with the Department of Justice or the United States Attorney’s Office. This is a non- reimbursable detail.

The ESU is responsible for reviewing all federal electronic surveillance requests and requests to apply for court orders permitting the use of video surveillance; providing legal advice to federal, state and local enforcement agencies on the use of federal electronic surveillance statutes; and assisting in developing Departmental policy on emerging technology and telecommunications issues.

The individuals who fill these positions will:

• evaluate requests from United States Attorneys' Offices throughout the country for Criminal Division approval to conduct electronic surveillance in Special Operations Division (SOD)-coordinated OCDETF investigations;

• travel to conduct OCDETF wiretap training to ensure compliance with all legal requirements and Department policy;

• advise on each OCDETF request and make recommendations as to the approval or denial of each application;

• advise Assistant United States Attorneys and investigators on the procedural and operational requirements for conducting electronic surveillance.

Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar (any jurisdiction), and have at least two (2) years of post-J.D. experience. Applicants should also possess: knowledge of administrative and criminal law principles; the ability to analyze and evaluate written materials; the ability to develop and maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with a variety of Federal organizations; the ability to meet short deadlines; the ability to function effectively in time-sensitive situations; the ability to communicate both orally and in writing; and a willingness to travel sometimes on short notice. Experience or background in criminal law is desirable.
