How to Apply for Experienced Attorney Positions
The Department maintains a decentralized system of recruiting experienced attorneys. Each Department organization conducts independent recruitment. Attorneys can respond to specific vacancy announcements or can submit a resume and cover letter describing their interest and highlighting their relevant experience to each organization where they wish to be considered for employment. A link to hiring contacts for components that accept unsolicited resumes is posted on the left. Smaller organizations hiring very few attorneys that do not wish to receive unsolicited resumes do not list a hiring contact.

Eligibility for Experienced Attorney Positions
Any attorney who is an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) and has at least one year post-J.D. experience is eligible to apply for a position as an experienced attorney. U.S. Attorneys' Offices may have state specific admission requirements.

What Kind of Experience Do Organizations Seek?

Given the breadth of the Department's legal practice (see the component practice areas) it is difficult to identify any particular experience as a basic threshold for consideration by an organization. Each organization and section has particular needs defined by its mission, type of practice and the specific skill needed at the time of the vacancy. Generally speaking, as the "Nation's Litigator," the Department seeks attorneys with some litigation experience. However, opportunities also exist for attorneys with other kinds of experience, such as legislative review, policy formulation, and provision of legal advice.
