- Work with OSHA to provide expertise in developing information on the recognition and prevention of
workplace hazards, and to provide expertise in developing ways of communicating such information
(e.g. print and electronic media, electronic assistance tools and OSHA's and the AIHA's Web sites)
to employers and employees in the industry.
Products
"Making the Business Case for Safety and Health" Safety and Health Topics page
Through the Alliance, AIHA representatives provided input and expertise to assist OSHA with the
development of its "Making the Business Case for Safety and Health" Safety and Health Topics page.
AIHA provided feedback on the draft page during a July 17, 2006, conference call with other Alliance
Program participants. The Topics page was launched on the agency's Web site in September 2006.

OSHA and AIHA Alliance Web Page
The OSHA and AIHA Alliance Web page on OSHA's Web site continues to be updated and includes links to
the Alliance agreement, renewal agreements, related documents, activities and events, and milestones
and successes. For example, links to the Alliance renewal agreement signed July 6, 2006 and related
OSHA news-release were added to the Web page. For more information on the number of hits to the OSHA
and AIHA Alliance Web page, please see the Alliance Program Reach table.
AIHA Chapter List
AIHA provided OSHA with a contact list of its Chapters that are in the same geographical areas as
OSHA's Ed Centers. OSHA posts the Chapter list on the OSHA and AIHA Alliance Limited Access Page
(LAP) and sends an e-mail announcing the list's availability to OSHA's National and Regional
Offices. OSHA staff can use the list to contact AIHA Chapters if they are looking for training
information or instructors in a specific safety and health topic area.
AIHA's Web Site
AIHA continues to update a page on its Web site that is devoted to ergonomics with links to the OSHA
and AIHA Alliance Web page, other OSHA materials, National Institute for Occupational Safety and
Health and other ergonomics resources.
Print and Electronic Media
Articles on the OSHA and AIHA Alliance appeared in a number of print and online publications,
including: Industry News, Occupational Safety and Health Reporter E-News,
and OSHA's news releases and QuickTakes. For more information on

AIHce 2006 Expo, Chicago, Illinois, May 13-18, 2006
Representatives from the OSHA and AIHA Alliance helped to identify OSHA speakers for workshops and
panel discussions during the AIHce 2006 Expo. The presentations covered a number of occupational
safety and health issues, including emergency response. OSHA staff members made the following
presentations during the Expo:
- Paula White, Director, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs (DCSP); Ruth McCully,
Director, Directorate of Science Technology and Medicine (DSTM); Richard Fairfax, Director,
Directorate of Enforcement Programs (DEP); Dorothy Dougherty, Acting Director, Directorate of
Standards and Guidance (DSG), gave an OSHA update to 140 attendees on May 15, 2006.
- Terry Krug, Training Instructor, Office of Training and Education (OTE), DCSP, participated in the
"Ask the Expert" Question and Answer Session attended by 63 people on May 15, 2006.
- Nancy Hauter, Region V, gave a presentation to 110 attendees on "Microbes, Emerging Resistance
and Superbugs: Healthcare Worker Safety, the New Frontier" on May 15, 2006.
- Mary Eide, Chemist, DSTM, gave a presentation to 82 attendees on "Validated Method for
Formaldehyde Using Three Different Diffusive Samplers" on May 16, 2006.

- Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., OSHA Assistant Secretary, gave a presentation to 400 attendees on "Reaching
New Heights: Where OSHA is Heading in 2006 and Beyond" on May 17, 2006.
- Bob Curtis, Director, OSHA Health Response Team, DSTM, gave a presentation to 150 attendees on
"Pilot Study: Practical Development of Site-Specific RF Safety Programs for 1,000 Cellular
Communication Sites" on May 17, 2005.
- Atkins Longmire, Medical Officer, DSTM, gave a presentation to 163 attendees on "Influenza-like
Symptoms in Laboratory Workers" on May 18, 2006.
- Minda Nieblas, Medical Officer, DSTM, gave a presentation to 40 attendees on "Protecting Those
Recovering the Area: Medical and OSHA Aspects" on May 18, 2006.
- Additionally, OSHA representatives staffed an Agency exhibit booth throughout the conference.
AIHA Ergonomics Committee
Through the Alliance, two OSHA staff members, Brett Besser and Elizabeth Sherfy, are participating
as ad hoc members on AIHA's Ergonomics Committee to facilitate communication between the two
organizations and to address and jointly discuss ergonomics-related issues that arise. OSHA staff
participated in the May 26, 2006 meeting of this committee in Chicago, Illinois.
- Promote and encourage AIHA members' or worksites' participation in OSHA's cooperative programs
such as compliance assistance, the Voluntary Protection Programs, and the Consultation Program and
its Safety and Health Recognition Program.
During this reporting period, OSHA and AIHA did not work on projects to address this goal.
- Work with other Alliance participants on specific issues and projects on ergonomics and hazard
communication that are addressed and developed through the Alliance Program.
Events
2006 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week, April 30-May 6, 2006
AIHA helped to support and promote 2006 NAOSH Week, which was April 30-May 6, 2006. NAOSH Week is
sponsored by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), another Alliance Program participant,
and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE). Mary Ann Latko, Director, Science and
Technical Initiatives, represented AIHA at the May 1, 2006, kick-off event at the Department of
Labor. The kick-off event included remarks by OSHA's Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., and
representatives from ASSE and CSSE.
"The Globally Harmonized System for the Classification for Worldwide Hazard
Communication: Status and Update on U.S. Implementation," TeleWeb Virtual Seminar, December 13, 2006
AIHA and the Society for Chemical Hazard Communication (SCHC), another Alliance Program participant,
jointly sponsored, "The Globally Harmonized System for the Classification for Worldwide Hazard
Communication: Status and Update on U.S. Implementation," TeleWeb Virtual Seminar on December 13,
2006. The seminar was broadcast to 425 people and featured presentations by Jennifer Silk, Deputy
Director, DSG; Jon Hellerstein, CIH, MeadWestvaco Corporation and member of AIHA; and Michelle
Sullivan, SCHC Board Chair.
Products
Safety Alert: Shipyard Sewage and Hydrogen Sulfide
AIHA worked collaboratively with three Alliance Program participants, the American Shipbuilding
Association, the National Shipbuilding Research Program and the Shipbuilders Council of America, to
develop the "Safety Alert: Shipyard Sewage and Hydrogen Sulfide." The Safety Alert is designed to
make shipyard employers and employees aware of the hazards of sewage systems on both ships and at
shipyard short facilities and to prevent accidents involving hydrogen sulfide gas. AIHA posted the
Safety Alert on its Web site and issued a press release in August 2006. OSHA links to the Safety
Alert from the OSHA and AIHA Alliance Web page on OSHA's Web site.
Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health
- Convene or participate in forums, round table discussions or stakeholder meetings on ergonomics
and hazard communication issues to help forge innovative solutions in the workplace or to provide
input on health and safety issues.
During this reporting period, OSHA and AIHA did not work on projects to address this goal.
- Executive Summary
OSHA and AIHA renewed their Alliance on July 6, 2006 and are continuing to work to reduce and
prevent employee exposure to ergonomic hazards and hazard communication issues in the workplace.
Through the agreement, the organizations have pursued a number of projects and activities addressing
occupational safety and health issues. For example, the OSHA and AIHA Alliance maintains several
resources with information about the Alliance, ergonomics and hazard communication issues, and other
safety and health materials. The OSHA and AIHA Alliance Web page features links to the Alliance
agreement, the renewal agreements, related documents, activities and events, and milestones and
successes. OSHA posts AIHA's Chapter List on the OSHA and AIHA Alliance LAP so OSHA staff can use
the list to contact AIHA chapters for safety and health training information or instructors.
In addition, the AIHA Web site features an ergonomics page that provides AIHA members and other
visitors to the site with resources for addressing ergonomics hazards, including links to the OSHA
and AIHA Alliance Web site, OSHA's Ergonomics Safety and Health Topics page and compliance
assistance materials. Additionally, through the Alliance, AIHA members provided input into the
development of OSHA's Making the Business Case for Safety and Health Topics page and helped to
review and revise many of OSHA's Safety and Health Topics pages and eTools covering such issues as
fire safety, machine guarding, and radiation by serving on the tools' editorial boards.
The Alliance implementation team also helped to identify speakers to share information on safety and
health issues. As a result, members of the OSHA and AIHA Alliance and other representatives from
OSHA, made presentations and exhibited at the AIHce 2006, in Chicago, Illinois, May 13-18, 2006. For
example, on May 17, 2006, OSHA Assistant Secretary, Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., gave a presentation,
"Reaching New Heights: Where OSHA is Heading in 2006 and Beyond," to 400 attendees. Other OSHA
representatives spoke on a number of safety and health issues, including disaster response and
recovery, lead and construction.
In addition, AIHA worked with other Alliance Program participants to promote workplace safety and
health issues. AIHA supported and participated in the 2006 NAOSH Week, which is sponsored by ASSE
and CSSE. The 2006 event was held April 30 – May 6, and Mary Ann Latko, Director, Science and
Technical Initiatives, attended the kick-off event at the Department of Labor on May 1, 2006.
Representatives from AIHA and SCHC, another Alliance Program participant, collaborated on the
TeleWeb Virtual Seminar, "The Globally Harmonized System for the Classification for Worldwide Hazard
Communication: Status and Update on U.S. Implementation," which was broadcast December 13, 2005 to
425 people.
AIHA also worked collaboratively with three other Alliance Program participants, the American

IV. Upcoming Milestones
During the upcoming year, OSHA and AIHA will continue to provide information, guidance, and access
to training resources to protect employees' health and safety, particularly in the areas associated
with ergonomics and hazard communication. For example, the Alliance will provide resources for the
public on ergonomics through the OSHA-AIHA Alliance Web page and AIHA's ergonomic Web page.
Additionally, representatives from AIHA will continue to serve on the editorial boards of OSHA
Safety and Health Topics pages and eTools, providing expert input on a number of occupational safety
and health issues.
The Alliance implementation team will also work with other Alliance Program participants on projects
related to occupational safety and health issues. For example, AIHA representatives will participate
in the Alliance Program Promoting the Globally Harmonized System for the Classification and Labeling
of Chemicals, which will be held in October 2006. In addition, AIHA is planning to support and
promote 2007 NAOSH Week, which will be May 6-12, 2007, with ASSE and numerous other Alliance Program
participants.
Through the Alliance, AIHA will develop fact sheets on a variety of safety and health issues, such
as personal protective equipment, respiratory protection and noise. The fact sheets will be
available free of charge on AIHA's Web site and linked to from the OSHA and AIHA Alliance Web page
on OSHA's Web site. OSHA also will consider including the fact sheets in the curriculum for its
short course for small business on health hazards.
In addition, OSHA representatives will continue to serve as ad hoc members of AIHA's ergonomic
committee, and AIHA will provide OSHA with an updated Chapter List for publication on OSHA's Limited
Access Page to foster relationships with OSHA regional and area offices and state plan states.
