Representatives of the Material Handling Industry of America, Crane Manufacturers Association of America, Hoist Manufacturers Institute and the Monorail Manufacturers Association sign an Alliance agreement with OSHA's then-Acting Assistant Secretary, Jonathan L. Snare on October 5, 2005.

  • Crane Manufacturers Association of America (CMAA)
  • Hoist Manufacturers Institute (HMI)
  • Monorail Manufacturers Association (MMA)
The OSHA and CMAA, HMI and MMA Alliance focuses on providing crane, hoist and monorail systems owners and operators, with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety. Through the Alliance, the organizations will focus on reducing and preventing exposure to workplace hazards associated with amputations and ergonomics. The Alliance's goals include:

Outreach and communication:
  • Work with OSHA to provide expertise in developing information on the recognition and prevention of workplace hazards, and to provide expertise in developing ways of communicating such information (e.g. print and electronic media, electronic assistance tools and OSHA's and the CMAA, HMI, and MMA Web sites) to employers and employees in the industry.
  • Share information among OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals regarding CMAA, HMI, and MMA best practices or effective approaches in the safe use of crane, hoist and monorail equipment and publicize results through outreach by CMAA, HMI, and MMA and through OSHA or CMAA, HMI and MMA developed materials, training programs, workshops, seminars, and lectures (or any other applicable forum).
Promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:
  • Convene or participate in forums, round table discussions, or stakeholder meetings on safety issues related to the use of crane, hoist and monorail equipment to help forge innovative solutions in the workplace or to provide input on safety and health issues.

  • May 4-10, 2008: 2008 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. The Crane, Hoist and Monorail Alliance and a number of other Alliance Program participants supported 2008 NAOSH Week, "Safety is Good Business." Sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace.
  • March 10-12, 2008: 2008 Material Handling Institute of America (MHIA) Spring Meeting, Charlotte, North Carolina.
    • F. Hal Vandiver, Executive Vice President, MHIA, delivered an update on the OSHA and Crane, Hoist and Monorail Alliance to 245 people at the MHIA spring meeting.
  • January 8-11, 2007: ProMat 2007, Chicago, Illinois.
    • Lee Anne Jillings and Jess McCluer, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, USDOL-OSHA, and William Coulehan, Jerry Vestal and Mark Blakemore, Region V, Calumet City, Illinois Area Office, USDOL-OSHA, staffed the OSHA/Crane, Hoist and Monorail Alliance exhibit booth.
  • September 16-20, 2006: MHIA 2006 Annual Membership and Product Sections & Councils Meetings, Scottsdale, Arizona.
    • September 18-19, 2006: Paula White, Director, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA, updated the Alliance's associations on the OSHA and Crane, Hoist and Monorail Alliance and the Agency's cooperative programs and compliance assistance resources

    • Fact Sheet No. 1: Proper Inspection and Maintenance of Overhead Cranes and Hoists [DOC* - 94 KB]. Through the OSHA and Crane, Hoist and Monorail Alliance, the Crane, Hoist and Monorail participants developed "Fact Sheet No. 1: Proper Inspection and Maintenance of Overhead Cranes and Hoists." The Fact Sheet provides information for employers and employees on standards, reference manuals and safety tips for the application and operation of overhead material handling equipment.     • Fact Sheet No. 2: Hoists, Cranes, Pullers - Safety & Warning Labels and Test Certification [DOC* - 89 KB]. Through the OSHA and Crane, Hoist and Monorail Alliance, the Crane, Hoist and Monorail participants developed "Fact Sheet No. 2: Hoists, Cranes, Pullers – Safety & Warning Labels Test Certification." The Fact Sheet provides information to employers and employees concerning items that operators and inspectors need to know when purchasing, installing or using hoist, crane and puller equipment.     • Safety Tips Sheet No. 1: Proper Use of Hand Signals for Cab-Controlled Cranes [DOC* - 300 KB]. Through the OSHA and Crane, Hoist and Monorail Alliance, the Crane, Hoist and Monorail participants developed "Safety Tips Sheet No. 1: Proper Use of Hand Signals for Cab-Controlled Cranes." The Tips Sheet provides information for employees regarding nine industry standard hand signals that are used for communication between the operator in the crane’s cab and the floor person.     • Safety Tips Sheet No. 2: Pre-Operational Equipment Check of Cranes and Hoists [DOC* - 82 KB]. Through the OSHA and Crane, Hoist and Monorail Alliance, the Crane, Hoist and Monorail participants developed "Safety Tips Sheet No. 2: Pre-Operational Equipment Check of Cranes and Hoists." The Tips Sheet provides information for employees regarding a pre-operational equipment checklist for cranes and hoists. (2006, September)
    • Safety Tips Sheet No. 3: Safe Lifting Practices [DOC* - 87 KB]. Through the OSHA and Crane, Hoist and Monorail Alliance, the Crane, Hoist and Monorail participants developed "Safety Tips Sheet No. 3: Safe Lifting Practices." The Tips Sheet provides information for employees regarding safe lifting practices for moving loads of material. (2006, September)
    • Safety Tips Sheet No. 4: Hoist Operation [DOC* - 87 KB]. Through the OSHA and Crane, Hoist and Monorail Alliance, the Crane, Hoist and Monorail participants developed "Safety Tips Sheet No. 4: Hoist Operation."
