Will focus on areas of cranes and rigging, hearing protection and ergonomics WASHINGTON -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Washington Group International have formed an Alliance to advance a culture of accident prevention in the engineering and construction industry, OSHA Administrator John Henshaw announced today. "We're especially pleased that Washington Group International wants to join with us to improve worker safety and health," Henshaw said. "A collaborative relationship strengthens the foundation upon which we can ensure that America's workers are afforded every means to have a safe and healthful work environment. We're committed to helping Washington Group help their employees." Washington Group International, headquartered in Boise, Idaho, was formed in July 2000 and has approximately 38,000 employees. The company provides engineering, construction, and program-management services to various markets, including environmental, government, industrial, mining, and transportation. Together, OSHA and Washington Group will use their collective expertise to provide the company's employees with information and guidance to prevent injuries and illnesses, with a particular focus in the areas of cranes and rigging, hearing protection, and ergonomics. The Alliance also calls for providing access to construction industry safety and health information and resources to help develop, implement or improve safety and health programs for contractors. Both organizations will work together to develop training and education materials and curricula on specific construction industry safety and health issues. Employees and contractors will also be encouraged to integrate a safety and health culture in day-to-day operations. The Alliance also calls for representatives from both organizations to participate in stakeholder groups and other forums regarding the development of safety and health standards for the construction industry. OSHA and Washington Group will share information regarding the company's engineering and construction safety and health practices, and cost benefit analysis techniques, with others in the industry through outreach. The Alliance encourages the Washington Group and OSHA to promote the company's engineering and construction safety and health success stories through both organizations' web sites and publications. NOTE: OSHA recently established a new page on its website called the "OSHA Alliance Program." The page lists all Alliances and provides general information on the agency's newest cooperative program. ###
