Working together to reduce injury and illness rates, focusing on ergonomics WASHINGTON -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) joined in a formal Alliance to further promote worker safety and health with a focus on reducing ergonomics-related injuries, OSHA Administrator John Henshaw announced today. "The relationship we have with ASSE is a solid foundation on which to develop this important alliance," Henshaw said. "Safety and health professionals are the key to further reductions in workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities. Combining our resources through this Alliance will have a tremendous impact on improved worker safety." The Alliance formalizes a working relationship between OSHA and ASSE to provide information and guidance on reducing and preventing exposure to ergonomic hazards, and for developing, implementing, or improving ergonomic programs in the workplace. "Our members are on the front lines when it comes to workplace safety," said ASSE President Mark Hansen. "Their commitment to safety and their expertise combined with the excellent caliber of OSHA staff will provide an unending well of resources that corporations and organizations from all industries can tap into in an effort to reduce injuries." ASSE members represent all industries, organized labor, government, and education. The Alliance calls for ASSE members with industry-specific expertise in the ergonomics field to participate in stakeholder groups and other forums. In addition, the Alliance establishes a process in which ASSE members can mentor and assist OSHA personnel as they progress through professional certifications. Both organizations will work together in meeting outreach and communication goals by sharing information through educational opportunities that provide the best information available regarding ergonomics and musculoskeletal disorders. OSHA and ASSE will promote and share information on best practices with others in the occupational health and safety profession, and participate in forums and roundtable discussions on ergonomic issues. The Alliance encourages both organizations to develop and disseminate information at conferences, events and through their respective websites. Participants will promote opportunities to speak, exhibit and appear at functions in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of ergonomic programs. A team of OSHA and ASSE representatives will meet quarterly to develop an action plan, determine working procedures, and identify roles and responsibilities of participants. NOTE: A new page has been established on OSHA's website called the "OSHA Alliance Program." In addition to listing the Alliances established, the page provides information on the agency's newest cooperative program in general, outlining the benefits in participating, what happens after an Alliance has been joined, and how to get started. ###
