CHICAGO -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and contractors across Illinois have renewed their alliance designed to reduce and eliminate employee exposure to work-related safety and health hazards in the landscaping industry. OSHA and the Illinois Landscape Contractors Association alliance will continue to achieve its safety and health goals by implementing safety and health programs, training, participation in conferences and forums, and sharing of best practices. "OSHA recognizes that the landscaping industry has a high number of safety incidents," said Diane Turek, the agency's area director in Des Plaines, Ill. "By working with this association, we can provide member contractors with information about OSHA requirements on a proactive basis. This positive approach to preventing accidents rather than investigating tragedy is the best way for all of us to help employees return safely home at the end of each work shift." Participation in this alliance is voluntary for landscaping contractors and subcontractors. The renewal will remain in effect for two years. OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the safety and health of employees through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. OSHA currently has more than 480 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. OSHA has improved workplace safety and health over the past 37 years. This success is reflected in the latest data (2006) showing the lowest national injury and illness incidence rate that the Bureau of Labor Statistics has ever recorded. OSHA will continue to work diligently to focus its resources where they will have the most impact in assuring that every working man and woman returns home safely every day. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to promote the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
