WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has joined with the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), an OSHA Alliance Program participant, and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) to kick off the annual North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week, May 4-10, 2008, in Washington D.C. This year's theme is "Safety is Good Business." The overall goal for this event is to increase awareness among employers, employees, the general public and others involved in occupational safety, health and the environment about the importance of injury and illness prevention on the job. This event will emphasize how developing and implementing effective safety systems in the workplace are good for business and for one's wellbeing. More than 50 OSHA Alliance Program participants are supporting 2008 NAOSH Week including the National Safety Council, American Heart Association and the Shipbuilders Council of America. "OSHA is proud to once again partner with the ASSE and CSSE, along with other safety and health industry groups to encourage employers to incorporate techniques that will keep employees safe," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Edwin G. Foulke, Jr. "Safety and health not only improves quality of life, but also adds value to business." The event will kick off on May 5 at the U.S. Department of Labor, Frances Perkins Building auditorium. Events throughout the day include an ASSE awards presentation at the U.S. Capitol and a tour of the National Gallery of Art for the winners of the "Safety-on-the-Job" poster contest for children ages 5-14 and their families. ASSE, founded in 1911, is the oldest and largest nonprofit professional safety organization. Its members include more than 31,000 occupational safety, health and environmental professionals. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to promote the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
