U.S. Labor Department's OSHA and Associated General Contractors renew alliance to promote construction safety

HOUSTON -- Furthering the safety and health of Hispanic construction employees in the Houston area is the goal of renewing an alliance between the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Houston Chapter of the Associated General Contractors (AGC).

"The renewal of this alliance for two more years gives members the opportunity to continue focusing on the safety and health issues of Hispanic employees," said Dean McDaniel, OSHA's regional administer in Dallas. "This voluntary cooperative relationship includes training and outreach to ensure employee safety."

The alliance, initially signed in 2002, provides employees with the opportunity to take an eight-hour safety awareness class in Spanish, free of charge, each quarter. Since the inception of the alliance, more than 700 employees have completed the training.

OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the safety and health of employees through cooperative relationships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. Alliances are a means for participating organizations to network with others committed to workplace safety and health and exchange information about hazards. OSHA has more than 480 national, regional and area office alliances nationwide with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.

For more information on this alliance or Hispanic construction safety awareness, contact the OSHA Houston North Area Office at 281-591-2438, the OSHA Houston South Area Office at 281-286-0583 or Doug Watson at the AGC office at 713-843-3700.

OSHA has improved workplace safety and health over the past 37 years. This success is reflected in the latest data (2006) showing the lowest national injury and illness incidence rate that the Bureau of Labor Statistics has ever recorded. OSHA will continue to work diligently to focus its resources where they will have the most impact in assuring that every working man and woman returns home safely every day.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to promote the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
