WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) and the Pulp and Paper Safety Association (PPSA) today renewed their Alliance, originally signed on Nov. 3, 2005, to provide the forest, pulp, paper, and paper-converting industries with employee safety and health guidance and training resources. "I am pleased that OSHA and AF&PA/PPSA remain committed to working together to provide important tools and resources to protect employees in the workplace," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Edwin G. Foulke, Jr. "The renewal of this Alliance will allow us to continue addressing important safety issues such as ergonomics and machine safety hazards in the forest, pulp, paper, and paper-converting industries." "The Alliance has expanded our vision on cooperative activities we can undertake to improve the safety and health of employees in our industry," said Donna Harman, President and CEO of AF& PA. "We look forward to building on what we have achieved during these past two years in furthering the safety and health goals of the Alliance." "We commend OSHA for creating and fostering the Alliance with industry," said Pam Cordier, Executive Director of PPSA. "There is no question that cooperation between OSHA and industry engenders new ideas and opportunities for advancing health and safety of all who work in our industry." In the past year, the Alliance has participated in events such as the OSHA 30-Hour Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry Course, the PPSA Annual Safety and Health Conference, and the AF&PA Safety and Health Group. In addition, the Alliance contributed in the development of a virtual seminar entitled "Managing Your Ergonomics Process in Converting Operations – Recipe for Success." Through the Alliance, OSHA and AF&PA/PPSA also developed ergonomic success stories that are posted on OSHA's website. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
