WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today renewed its alliance with ISSA to continue providing their members and other stakeholders in the cleaning, maintenance and warehousing industries with important information related to potential hazards such as slips, trips and falls and hazard communication in the workplace. "This cooperative alliance has enabled more than 77,000 ISSA members and other stakeholders to receive valuable information and benefits from the ISSA Safety and Health Portal and Safety and Health Topics pages that were developed for ISSA's members, employers and employees in the cleaning industry," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Edwin G. Foulke, Jr. "With the potential hazards that come from working in the cleaning and maintenance industries, the tools developed by this alliance will help keep America's working men and women safe and healthy in the workplace." "The ISSA-OSHA alliance provides us with a unique opportunity to work directly with the agency to address key health and safety issues that are of particular concern to employees in the cleaning industry," said ISSA President Kyle Ogden. "The resources that have been produced through the alliance, such as the online ISSA Safety and Health Portal (www.issa.com/osha), have had a positive impact on employee health and safety and renewing the alliance allows us to continue working with OSHA in a collaborative and effective manner." In addition to the ISSA safety portal, the alliance has developed the article, "Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls for Custodians," that covers the common causes for slips, trips and falls. "Minimizing Slips, Trips and Falls," is a checklist that addresses a number of topics including, housekeeping, employee training, flooring and stairs, and matting and footwear. OSHA and ISSA representatives have also participated in numerous industry events such as the ISSA/INTERCLEAN 2006 and regional association meetings and conferences. ISSA is a trade association for the cleaning industry with more than 4,800 distributor, manufacturer, building service contractor and in-house service provider members. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
