American Council of Independent Laboratories WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has renewed its alliance with the American Council of Independent Laboratories (ACIL). Through the alliance, OSHA and ACIL are using their collective expertise to help increase awareness of OSHA's Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) program. "The OSHA Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory program is an indispensable component in ensuring the health and safety of employees in the workplace," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Edwin G. Foulke Jr. "When a testing laboratory places its nationally-registered mark on the products they test, they're certifying the product meets OSHA standards of approval of equipment. Together, this alliance is a huge step forward in promoting and encouraging workplace safety." "ACIL values its positive relationship with OSHA and remains committed to raising awareness of the agency's Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory program which is a key success in helping to ensure the health and safety of the American workforce," said ACIL Deputy Director and Acting Executive Director Eddie Van Aken. "ACIL is pleased to continue working with OSHA through the alliance, as we continue to promote the value of this program and workplace safety and health both within the Independent Testing Industry and to the public in general." OSHA's Directorate of Science, Technology, and Medicine oversees the NRTL program. The OSHA recognized laboratories determine if equipment and products that are required to be approved by the agency's regulations meet consensus-based product safety test standards. Approval helps ensure the equipment or products can be used safely in the workplace. Through the alliance, OSHA representatives participated in the ACIL Mid-Winter Meeting and the American Council for Electrical Safety Meeting last year. In addition, the OSHA and ACIL implementation team developed a pocket card which shows the product safety certification marks used by testing laboratories within the OSHA NRTL program. The alliance has also developed "As The Threat of Counterfeit Product Approval Marks Warrants Aggressive Detection and Enforcement Action" white paper and "Quick Tips for Identifying Counterfeit Marks" to help safety and health professionals and the public understand the dangers of products with counterfeit marks and how to identify the marks in the workplace. Founded in 1937, ACIL is a trade association representing independent, commercial scientific and engineering firms. Its members are professional service firms specialized in testing, product certification, consulting, and research and development. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
