CONCORD, N.H. -- Providing the Granite State's smaller businesses and employers with safety and health information is the goal of a new alliance among the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services' OSHA Consultation Program and the New Hampshire Small Business Development Center. Through this alliance, the state of New Hampshire program and the small business development center will work with OSHA to develop and deliver seminars on construction safety and health and other topics for New Hampshire businesses, share best practices and effective approaches, conduct outreach, and develop and disseminate case studies illustrating the value of safety and health. They also will encourage businesses to build relationships with OSHA's area and regional offices and promote their participation in OSHA's cooperative programs. "This alliance will assist OSHA in reaching and providing important occupational safety and health information to New Hampshire's employers, which will help them to better safeguard their employees against on-the-job hazards," said Rosemarie Ohar, director of the federal agency's area office in Concord. The alliance was signed by Ohar; Stephen Beyer, consultation project manager with the state program, and Mary Collins, the small business development center's director. The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services' OSHA Consultation Program provides free, on-site health and safety services to eligible employers. The Small Business Development Center, an outreach program of the University of New Hampshire's Whittemore School of Business and Economics, offers free, one-on-one, confidential business counseling, low-cost training programs and access to information and referrals for Granite State small businesses. OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. OSHA currently has more than 450 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
