BOSTON -- Massachusetts workers who manufacture concrete blocks and other stone landscaping products can benefit from a new alliance among the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the New England Concrete Masonry Association (NECMA) and the Massachusetts Division of Occupational Safety's Consultation Program (MDOS-CP). The alliance seeks to reduce and prevent workers' exposure to such hazards as exposure to silica, high noise levels, electrical and confined space hazards and being struck by large concrete blocks. The New England Concrete Masonry Association represents concrete block producers and affiliates who supply products or services to the concrete masonry industry. Under the alliance, OSHA, NECMA and MDOS-CP will develop training and education programs for NECMA members and others, including presentation of OSHA's 10-hour construction safety course. The alliance will promote NECMA members' participation in OSHA's cooperative programs and encourage them to work with the agency's regional and area offices to address occupational hazards. "The foundation of occupational safety is knowledge," said Marthe Kent, OSHA's regional administrator for New England. "Our goal is to equip industry workers with the information and ability to identify and correct hazards before they cause injury or illness." The alliance was signed Nov. 20 by OSHA Massachusetts Area Directors Brenda Gordon, Francis Pagliuca and Mary Hoye; David Dimmick, executive director of NECMA; and Robert Prezioso, commissioner of MDOS-CP. OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. OSHA currently has 447 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees.
