BILLINGS, Mont. -- Enhancing safe and healthful working conditions for workers in Montana's construction industry is the goal of a newly signed alliance between the Billings, Mont. area office of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Montana Contractor Compensation Fund (MCCF). Under the alliance, OSHA and the MCCF will develop and deliver training and education programs for MCCF members, focusing on reducing construction-related accident and injury rates. "This alliance will present a resource for MCCF members by providing safety and health information and knowledge that will help them to identify and prevent workplace hazards," said Ross Yeager, OSHA area office director in Billings. "Most importantly, this alliance will provide another tool to reduce injuries and illnesses in the construction industry." OSHA and MCCF will share information regarding best practices or effective approaches and distribute it through outreach activities, including the MCCF Web site, newsletters and bulletins. The alliance also will encourage participation by MCCF members in OSHA's cooperative programs, including compliance assistance, the Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP), the state consultation service and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP). OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with employers, trade associations and labor. The MCCF is a self-insured membership group of 31 Montana contractors and associate members. OSHA has created more than 350 alliances nationwide with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees.
