OSHA Alliance Promotes Job Safety for Highland Green Residential Construction Project in Topsham

TOPSHAM, Maine -- Safe and healthful working conditions for employees building the Highland Green residential construction project in Topsham is the goal of a new alliance among the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA); the Maine 21(d) Consultation Project ("Safety Works!"); and Ledgewood Builders, LLC, the project's general contractor and project manager.

The alliance will provide Ledgewood employees, sub-contractors and others working on the project with information, guidance and training resources to reduce and prevent exposure to construction related hazards.

Alliance participants will develop training and education programs on safety and health issues, particularly the four major causes of construction injuries and deaths: falls, electrocutions, caught in/between and struck-by hazards. This will include the delivery of OSHA 10 and 30 hour construction courses and on-site consultation services by "Safety Works!"

"This alliance is an excellent opportunity to provide the project's workers with an extra set of tools: knowledge and training that will help them to identify and prevent occupational hazards," said Kimberly Castillon, OSHA's area director for Maine.

Alliance members will work together on projects that focus on construction safety and health issues. Participation by Ledgewood and its subcontractors in OSHA's cooperative programs will be encouraged.

The alliance was signed this month at OSHA's Augusta area office by Castillon; David E. Wacker, director of the Workplace Safety and Health Division of the Maine Department of Labor; and Peter Benard, president of Ledgewood Builders, LLC.

OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with employers, trade associations and labor. OSHA has created more than 425 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. For more information about this and other alliances in Maine, call OSHA's Augusta office at (207) 626-9160.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
