WESTBURY, N.Y. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Associacion de Guatemaltecos Morazanecos Ausentes en USA (AGMAUSA) have renewed their alliance to enhance safety and health awareness among Hispanic workers on Long Island, N.Y. The alliance, which began in March 2004, seeks to reduce and prevent common construction and general-industry hazards by providing information, guidance and training to workers, particularly non-English or limited English- speaking employees. AGMAUSA is an organization serving the Hispanic community on Long Island. "The results of this alliance are exceptional and promising," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator. "In its first two years, more than 150 workers have completed OSHA's 10-hour construction-safety course in Spanish, while more than 3,000 Hispanic workers have received information about OSHA and workplace safety." "This information is invaluable for workers," said Diana Cortez, OSHA's regional Hispanic coordinator. "They can utilize the information to identify workplace hazards and thereby prevent occupational injuries and illnesses." "Preventing injuries and illnesses helps workers, employers and their communities," said Patricia Jones, OSHA's Long Island area director. "Safety and health can add value by reducing the human and financial costs that can follow in the wake of an on-the-job accident or illness, while increasing morale and productivity." Under the renewed alliance, OSHA and AGMAUSA will continue to work with Long Island's Hispanic community, faith-based and community organizations. These organizations will encourage bilingual individuals to take OSHA's "Train-the-Trainer" courses, so individuals can qualify to present OSHA's 10-hour general-industry and construction- safety courses in Spanish. The alliance will also promote participation by AGMAUSA members in OSHA's cooperative programs. The alliance renewal was signed May 23 in Westbury, N.Y., by Clark, Jones and Cortez of OSHA. Edgar Anibal Castellon, president, and Erasmo Morales, vice president of AGMAUSA, also signed the alliance renewal. Chao's effort to improve health and safety for workers through cooperative partnerships with employers, trade associations, government and labor.
