Agreement highlights top threats to workplace safety and health CHICAGO -- Two of the state's most recognized experts on workplace safety and health agreed to join forces today to combat some of the most common workplace injuries and illness threats with the signing of an alliance during ceremonies at the annual Illinois Safety Council's safety days meetings in Hillside, Illinois on Thursday, May 11. The Council and the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) signed the formal alliance to provide business and industry with resources that will help focus on reducing and preventing exposure to falls, amputations, ergonomic, chemical, electrical and other physical hazards, and addressing the implementation of effective safety and health programs through development of materials designed to raise awareness of such hazards. "I'm extremely pleased to be partnering with an organization with the reputation and proven track record in safety expertise," said Michael G. Connors, OSHA regional administrator in Chicago. "We welcome their cooperation, their knowledge, and their dedication to keeping the workplace safe as our allies in this cause." The four OSHA area offices located in Illinois will participate in the alliance. The Safety Council will work with OSHA to develop training and education programs on work-related safety issues, and the alliance calls for OSHA and the Red Cross to share information regarding best practices or effective approaches, and then publicize results through developed materials, training programs, workshops, seminars, or lectures. Both organizations will also speak, exhibit and appear at conferences, local meetings or other events, and also disseminate information for the workers in central Illinois. OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve health and safety for workers through cooperative partnerships. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
