BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Reducing and preventing hazardous conditions for Hispanic workers in Erie and Niagara counties is the goal of a new alliance between the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Niagara Frontier Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE). "This alliance will allow us to reach out to a group of workers who are constantly exposed to a variety of hazards in general industry and construction," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator. "Our goal is to equip them with the knowledge to identify and prevent common workplace hazards that could result in serious injury, illness or death." Under the alliance, OSHA and ASSE will work jointly to help provide OSHA 10-hour training classes for Hispanic employers and workers. The classes will focus on reducing and preventing exposure to fall, excavation, chemical, electrical, amputation, lead and silica hazards. The alliance will also encourage bi-lingual members of the ASSE's Niagara Frontier Chapter to take the OSHA train-the-trainer course so they can teach the OSHA 10-hour course in both English and Spanish. "Delivering training in a way that will help workers understand the fundamentals of working safely should pay dividends in fewer injuries and illnesses and a knowledgeable, productive workforce," said Art Dube, OSHA's western New York area director. The alliance will also encourage chapter members' participation in OSHA's cooperative programs, including Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP), consultation and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP). The alliance was signed by Clark and Dube of OSHA; Raymond Wagner, president, ASSE, Niagara Frontier Chapter; and William W. Brandt, area director, ASSE. OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships. OSHA has created more than 350 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
