Focus Continues on Reducing Strains, and Slips, Trips and Falls WASHINGTON -- New Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Ed Foulke today signed a two-year Alliance renewal with the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) to focus on safety and health protection efforts for workers in the landscaping industry. The renewal was signed during the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) kickoff of the agency's Summer Job Safety Campaign. The renewal allows OSHA and PLANET to continue focusing on providing industry employees, including youth and non-English speaking workers, with information and guidance that will help them reduce injuries from manual material handling; amputations; motor vehicle crashes; and slips, trips and falls. "This Alliance will help us to continue reducing injuries and illnesses in the landscaping industry," Foulke said. "We've already been able to develop a safety and health topics page on the OSHA Web site for the Landscape and Horticultural Industry, and PLANET has developed a series of safety and health Tips Sheets for employers and employees. This joint effort will continue to help advance a culture of injury and illness prevention, while sharing best practices on improving workplace safety and health." "Together, PLANET and OSHA are committed to helping green industry companies avoid preventable injuries," added PLANET President John Gibson. "By providing access to information on developing and implementing safety and health programs, we can help companies identify common industry hazards and solutions to those hazards. Informational materials that are being developed through the Alliance are good examples of the kinds of 'tools' employers and workers can use to better address safety and health issues in the workplace." OSHA and PLANET will continue to work together to increase access for employees to safety and health information and outreach programs. Both organizations will also continue to develop and disseminate injury and hazard information at conferences and events, and through print and electronic media. Today's signing of the Alliance renewal took place during the launch of OSHA's Teen Summer Job Safety Campaign at Edison Academy in Alexandria, Va. The campaign is a multi-year project designed to increase awareness about workplace hazards, and provide possible solutions to those hazards, for young workers and their parents. It focuses on industries in which young people are likely to work during their high school and college years. This year the focus is on the landscaping industry. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
