METHUEN, Mass. -- Improving safety and health for Brazilian workers and business owners in the Bay State is the goal of a new alliance among the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Brazilian Immigrant Center and the Massachusetts Division of Occupational Safety's consultation program. OSHA alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's efforts to improve health and safety for workers through cooperative partnerships with employers, trade associations and labor. The Brazilian Immigrant Center in Allston, Mass., is a community-based organization working to empower Brazilians with information on critical issues like access to education, workplace rights and immigration. "This alliance seeks to equip one of the fastest growing populations in the Bay State with information and skills to help them identify and correct workplace hazards before they hurt workers," said Francis Pagliuca, OSHA's area director for Middlesex and Essex counties. Alliance participants will develop and deliver bilingual training and education programs for Brazilian Immigrant Center clients and others, including immigrant workers, small business owners and young workers. Training will focus on identifying and correcting hazards associated with construction work, landscaping and other high hazard industries. Web sites, conferences, local meetings and Brazilian festivals will be used as avenues to communicate safety and health information to immigrant employers and workers. Brazilian Immigrant Center clients who own businesses will be encouraged to participate in OSHA's cooperative programs such as compliance assistance, Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP), safety consultation and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP). The alliance was signed today at the OSHA office in Methuen by OSHA area directors Francis Pagliuca (Methuen), Brenda Gordon (Braintree) and Mary Hoye (Springfield); Fausto daRocha, executive director, Brazilian Immigrant Center; and Robert Prezioso, commissioner, Massachusetts Division of Occupational Safety. OSHA has created more than 400 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
