CHICAGO -- An alliance forged today by government, union and business leaders in Illinois aims to protect the health and safety of workers in the state's residential construction industry. The alliance was signed by the Aurora, Calumet City and Chicago North area offices of the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Residential Construction Employers Council, the Chicago & Northeast Illinois District Council of Carpenters Apprentice and Training Program, and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity's On-Site Safety and Health Consultation Program. OSHA alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers. OSHA has created more than 400 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. "Alliances are one of the cornerstones in our efforts to enlist the help of businesses and unions in making sure workplaces are safe and healthful," said Michael G. Connor, OSHA regional administrator in Chicago. "We will work together to reach our common goal of reducing injuries and illnesses at residential construction worksites." Alliance members will provide employers with safety and health information, training resources and guidance. The alliance will develop education programs to reduce and prevent exposure to hazards associated with residential construction, such as electrical hazards, improper scaffolding, inadequate fall protection and unsafe trenches. Employers will also have access to mentoring and on-site consultation services. Alliance members will develop and communicate information to help employers and workers recognize and prevent job-related hazards. At conferences and public forums, members will share information about best practices and forge innovative solutions to improve workplace safety and health. Information on safety and health will be distributed at seminars, meetings or workshops to raise awareness and demonstrate commitment to workplace safety and health. The alliance will also promote and encourage participation in OSHA's cooperative programs. These include compliance assistance, safety and health consultation programs, the Voluntary Protection Programs and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
