ATLANTA -- The three Georgia offices of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Local Union 72, the Mechanical Contractors Association of Georgia, and the Georgia Institute of Technology, Safety, Health and Environmental Technology Division, have formed an alliance to promote safer construction job sites. A signing ceremony was held Tues., Dec. 6, in Atlanta. The alliance will focus on reducing worker injuries, illnesses and deaths by developing and implementing programs to recognize and abate workplace hazards. The alliance's training and education efforts will address safe work practices for welding; trenching and excavating; fall protection; eye protection, and ergonomics issues. In addition to conducting safety classes, alliance representatives will provide expertise in developing information on the recognition and prevention of hazards at construction sites and communicating this information to employers and employees.
