Agreement highlights top threats to workplace safety and health DES PLAINES, Ill. -- Workers in central Illinois stand to benefit from an alliance signed today between the Illinois Council on Long Term Care and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), designed to reduce and prevent some of the most common workplace injuries and illness threats. The Council and OSHA signed the formal alliance to provide workers with resources that will help focus on reducing and preventing exposure to the numerous health and safety hazards associated with nursing homes, such as ergonomic hazards, bloodborne pathogens, and electrical and lockout/tagout issues, and addressing the implementation of effective safety and health programs. "The nursing profession is one of the most respected in our country, and it is fitting that we do all we can to keep those workers safe while they tend to our loved ones at times of crisis in our own lives," said OSHA Area Director Diane Turek, Des Plaines, Ill. "Joining with an organization with the stature and reputation of the Council to combat hazards that workers in the nursing and nursing home community face, will ultimately benefit us all." The Council will work with OSHA to develop training and education programs on work-related safety issues, and the alliance calls for the two agencies to share information regarding best practices or effective approaches, and then publicize results through developed materials, training programs, workshops, seminars, or lectures. Both organizations will also speak, exhibit and appear at conferences, local meetings or other events, and also disseminate information for the workers in central Illinois. OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve health and safety for workers through cooperative partnerships. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
